Here's a cool story I thought I'd share with the board.

I have a good friend who's a librarian. Granted, very few cool stories start off with a line like that, but hear me out.

Said friend, who is also a huge comics fan, was recently invited up to D.C. for something at the Library of Congress, and while there, got to do down into the archives, specifically the periodicals section which includes, of course, the comic books, and had the opportunity to look through (and hold) some of the books stored there. A few pictures were taken.

I knew the LoC kept a copy of everything, but honestly I never really grasped the sheer volume of all that storage before.

Everything you see in these pics is comics...

And yeah, I don't think they'd ever have gotten me out of there.

That is very cool!

Crazy to think there are (almost certainty) private collections far, far more valuable and more complete.

Unless all those comics were donated by one person who bought them all off the rack, they would not qualify for a pedigree.

I’ve tried to puzzle out the organization system. Zooming in on the contents of the box Batman 1 is in, you can see the front left is Action Comics and the front right is Miss Fury. My first thought was that the box contained all or part of the books that came out that week in spring of 1940. But Miss Fury didn’t start until 1941, so I don’t know…

I wonder when they started on that collection and if there are issues they are missing or try to upgrade on certain issues?

They are missing a lot.

For example, they have Action Comics 1… the 1988 reprint.

Then they have maybe 15% of the run (originals) from 1 to 100 and none or few of the major keys. No AC23 for example.

It is more a sampling than anything complete.

There are many private collections that are far more impressive.

That said, most won’t allow researchers and “semi public” to take a look at their copies. So it is very cool.

It is because the collection is not systematic or complete. The LOC is large but more a sampling, especially for things like comics and especially for the very rare…

Here you can see the very incomplete Action Comics run, location and access restrictions (comic vault, special access request / permissions):
