Batman #227 or Batman #221?17210

Collector ticktocktyler private msg quote post Address this user
Batman #227 or Batman #221? I have had 2 copies of Bat 227. Currently an 8.0 and a former 9.4 I traded away. Right before that person spent a billion dollars on a 9.8.

Bat 227 is of course the Adams riff on Detective 31. A "Hanging Panels" cover, whatever that is. The only reason to have that book is the cool cover. Story is so-so. Art is mediocre. has a Robin back-up story. Cover is admittedly amazing. Although - like Bat 251 - there is an error concerning Batman's ears that grinds on me a little.

I had not given much thought to Bat #221. Hadn't really paid attention to the cover until one day it dawned on me "That's a really classic image." Of course by the time I had noticed it, the prices began to nudge up. I bought a raw copy late last year finally. Really nice shape. Some printers ink on the back cover. That's ok. I got it for a good price from MCS. I'm not prepared to spend $1200-$1600 for a 9.6.

Images are not mine. I'm too lazy to go upstairs and dig my images out. A representative 8.0 and Greg Reeces 9.6 I covet but cannot have.

So, which is it? Which is the better cover? Which one is preferred? Best to have both, of course but if you could have one? Which? Eh?

I've had several copies of issue 227 and I always sell them. It isn't a comic I crave in my collection.

There's a reason 227 is significantly more popular.
227 definitely has a better cover

227 for me. I've seen the cover to 221 before but it's not very memorable.

If the viagra is working you should be well over a 9.8. xkonk private msg quote post Address this user
I don't believe I've ever seen the cover for 221 before so I'm going with 227.

I'd say #221, but only because I already have a #227. If I didn't have either, it'd be #227. Nice line art + grey-tone cover by Neal Adams.

I prefer 221. The colors are brighter, is more dynamic and the overall picture just flows better.

While 227 is cool, the colors don't pop and looks like objects just put on the same page without a sense of direction.

221. I have never understood the allure of 227.

227. Beautiful homage cover that more than stands on its own as a classic itself.

221 is actually a weaker Adams cover imo.

227 by far for me.

227 for myself as well.
The other cover with the name of the book outlined in red cheapens the look in my opinion.

Interesting. I never saw it as weak but I DID have trouble identifying it. The first few views I thought it was a woodland scene. Then I figured out it was a city by night scene. Then I figured out it reminded me of Detective 405. Right down to the bent in stubby Bat-leg.

Yes. The red is garish given the mood Adams was trying to set. The piffling criticism I have with 227 is they could have left the brown outline out altogether in the Batman logo and left it yellow on a black background. But the brown outline works with the other color elements in the image.

The cover to 221 is too busy but not in a pleasing way (unlike multiple Perez covers). Largely due to the color choices. The effect may have been intentional, almost camouflaging Batman through causing the eyes to jump between the blue, purple and yellow.

Detective Comics 405 is more effectively composed imo and a better cover than 221 (though inferior still to 227).

I'd choose Batman 241 classic cover and no one hunts for it so.

227 for me. I love the homage, but 221 is cool. I agree about the red outline though for 221. Wish they had picked a different color.

This is the first time I've ever seen 221. It's cool but I don't think it compares to 227 as far as display worthy covers go. My guess, if I displayed them side by side, any comments from non-collectors would be about 227.

Definitely 227.

The hanging panel is the little rectangle around Robin.

It's picking up steam, though. Adam's covers without interior art are getting more spendy. They were before COVID. 241 was hard to find in top shape as well.

227 would be my preference, although 221 isn't too shabby either.
Detective 400 is another great cover I wouldn't mind adding to the collection.

400 has gained a lot of momentum as well. That was a story reprinted in "Batman: From The 30's To The 70's" too. I should look for that hardcover on EBay. That and the Superman one. Those were classy anthology's.
