1Have I told you about the time I dropped off 3,000 comics at SDCC? | Scifinator private msg quote post Address this user
With the release of Overstreet's Lost Universes, I decided to put up many of my collection of 80's & 90's independents. Also, note that a lot of the 9.4 and below listings (especially the Topp comics like Dracula, Vlad the Impaler, etc.) were not pressed and would likely regrade to 9.6-9.8 due to stuff like polybag crease. See CBCS graders notes for non 9.8's. CBCS Forum members will get at least 22% off if you contact me with you interest list. So far, here is what has been listed: 3/23 $40 Exiles #4 CBCS 9.0 1993 consigned 3/23 $83 Exiles #3 CBCS 9.8 1993 consigned This item's CBCS grade exceeds the top grade in the CGC census, 9.2. 3/23 @Reelgee - I do not have any raw remaining. Quote:Originally Posted by Reelgee Now you did it...Have I told you about the time that I dropped off over 3,000 comics at the 2019 SDCC... Cutting out a lot of the past history, I made the decision to grade encase my entire collection after a couple of unfortunate incidents damaged a prized possession and some key comics. In making the commitment, I decided to grade it ALL and retain about 25% - 35% in my permanent collection and sell of the rest to offset the costs. These "Lost Universe's" were on the bubble for either my permanent collection or to be sold. Many of the were personal favorites from a storyline or artwork stand point. So, no, the Exiles are not particularly keys, though quite some time after Marvel bought Malibu, they did reboot the title. I only recently decided to ship them off to MCS for sale after the Overstreet Lost Universe's was announced. Who knows, with the way Disney/Star Wars/MCU reboots are carrying over to comics and Licensed rich Dark Horse has been acquired by a media/video game company, maybe some of these titles and characters get found/rebooted. |

And for those interested they can be found at this direct link: Scifinator's MCS SlabSmart store Listings You can view MCS's high quality scans of each comic and they have some pretty good details on most all of the comics. I can also say that a few of my comics have had to be "added" to their database. So, some of my comics were more...let's say esoteric than most. And, quite a few of my collection is also ranked as the Only Graded Example in the CBCS Population Report. @Reelgee - One collectors treasure is another collectors drek. What started me down this road is the my "treasured" Marvel Fanfare #1 (signed inside cover at publication by Michael Golden) got 100% folded across the top 1/3 of the comic. Looked like a hockey stick from the side. After a lot of research, I sent it in to @SteveRicketts / CBCS for press and VSP. After Capt. Pancakes was done, it came back to me as a legit 9.6. When someone is this good at their craft, it is no wonder they command such a following that people like me don't bat an eye about a 71 wk estimated TAT...But, that's another thread... |

@Reelgee - 7,000 is a huge collection. If there are some that you want or would be willing to part with, I would highly recommend sending those separately, and perhaps before other comics, to CBCS for grading and to have MCS pick them up directly when completed. That way, you only physically touch and ship them once. That is one of my two biggest "I wish I had done this in the first place" in regards to my 100% grading venture. Also, by focusing first on the pieces you will sell, you may be able to keep somewhat cash neutral or even positive if you are aggressive with your selling prices. If you have no intention to sell any of your collection, then the above is not helpful. Anyway, good luck with your recovery. Cheers |

@Nuffsaid111 - Not all were post 1975, but most were. Everything from the 2019 SDCC submission was Modern, Expanded, or Consumer. About 2/3 were pressed. I do not believe that I have ever used a Fast Pass or a Fast Press.

Masculinity takes a holiday. | EbayMafia private msg quote post Address this user
@Reelgee I think the strategy was to grade them all rather than spend time and energy trying to parse out the profitable from the unprofitable without knowing the final grades. Knowing that some would make little profit or even lose money I think @Scifinator chose to focus on the Forest rather than take the time to examine the individual trees. If that 9.6 had been a 9.8 it would have gone from mildly losing money to mildly profitable. He couldn't know this in advance.

@Reelgee - @EbayMafia is on point. Battletide is a good example of the lower end fringe. I actually had all comics shipped back to me before I started using MCS. I sold mist of the 9.8’s (Battltidr included) on ebay for $50-100. So most of those sales were a double to triple of cost basis. A majority of my comics came back at 9.8 and there were several solid 3 and 4 figure sales. I am Scifinator, so there was a crap ton of Star Wars titles. My cost have been 100% recouped, so,even if an an item like the 9.6 Battletide is sold at a loss, it is still positive cash flow for me at this point. Now, i mentioned the if i were to do it over again thing… the second one would be to just have all of those polybagged comics pressed. I could feel and see there were no spine creases, ticks nor edge folds or bends (like on all of those Topps comics and the X-Men high 200’s. Man, did I learn too late what a polybag crease was. At the time, most did not warrant the cost of re-submitting, and then when values on a few did warrant, i chose not to wait a year plus for press and re-grade. |
