I really hate the fact that cgc took almost a year to get me my The Last Ronin books back to me. I just recently got them they looked ok at first until i took them out of the bags they were in and seen the cracks on 2 of the 3. It looks like they dropped them. Now incase anyone is wondering after i recently got them and looked at them fast i put them back in the box with bubble wrap they came until today. All I can say is i can't wait until CBCS starts grading this style of books/Magazines.

sadly common issue with cgc. some are cracked, some have smudges that are hard to get rid of (and those arent the worst). people prefer cbcs as their cases are better and harder to break

I definitely love the quality of the CBCS cases in my opinion they are the best. I have a tales to astonish 88 that's signed by Stan Lee that happens to be a cgc that I won from something I bought at target a few years ago but it also has a cracked case . With that 1 I'd have to pay for as I won it but not sure I want to send it to them. I'd rather send it to CBCS

You'd be paying for the new case either way. If it were me, I'd send it to CBCS. It sounds like a nice book, and it deserves the best case.

now a days all you are paying with cgc is their prestige. more problems with cgc but is the most popular. cbcs does have issues but not as often or major.

I used to believe that the debris, cracks, abrasions, smudges on CGC cases that people posted were instances of isolated events when taken as a whole, weren't actually alot.

Then later I thought it was unusual to see so many isolated examples of debris, cracks, abrasions, smudges that I began to think well, when do consistent examples become considered systemic? Especially since CGC grades so many books. So I kinda still dismissed those instances.

Then it began happening to me once. Then it happened again and again.
It was at that time that the statement "well they grade so many books so of course there will be these instances" became a hot load of bullsh&t of an excuse.

Their run rate for problems is, anecdotally, way over what it should be even with the large totals they are grading. Its outright unacceptable.

isolated is like a few cases ever.....like you have better odds of winning the lottery after getting attacked by a shark.....and a bear in same day.....

but its a common issue.

These cracked / debris in CGC cases is more like getting attacked by a Deer Tick and a Mosquito in the same day.

Totally agree! There's such an influx of books over the past year or so that CGC has pulled everybody into Grading (shippers, encapsulates, labelers etc.) which is why their Grading and QC is in the toilet! Three graders per book? Pfft..no time for that!! lol!! But seriously though...huge increase in QC issues it seems.

CGC has some QC issues for sure but what blows me away is the F'N Newton Rings.

New book and slabbed in "upgraded" case this year...

I know for many this is an old well known issue but I had never seen it before getting this book. None of my older CGC slabs have any sign of this.

How the hell can anyone trust that their slabbed book from CGC is not going to look like an oil spill?

This book is going to CBCS in my next order to be cracked and slabbed in a case that will add to the presentation and not take away from it.

Sorry for the thread hijack and rant

So true! and that prestige is eroding and if these cgc issues continue that prestige will disappear.

It won't cost you a dime to have the 2 cracked slabs reholdered by CGC.

TAT will be about a month and you will retain the current grades from CGC.

Others suggested subbing the slabs to CBCS, but that would cost you CBCS grading fees for Raw Grade.

2 downsides here:

1)
Raw Grade books don't bring the same FMV as slabbed books do.

2)
You'd basically be throwing the money you paid to CGC, and CBCS doesnt yet offer slabbed magazine grading either.

I wish you the best of luck.
Just make sure you have this handy as there is no way you will get no scuffs. Meguiars has become my right hand man with CGC deliveries. I need him EVERY time.

Now that I understand more of what Newton rings are it is a really scary thing!
Never mind that they look horrible -they are an indication of uneven pressure on the book within the case.
In certain instances this can lead to the creep engine phenomenon - and ruin the books all while safely sealed!!

Solution - less pressure = no Newton rings....now you have a loose book within the case subject to damage from shifting etc. (plenty of examples of shifting books etc.)

I'm not sure what the design difference is between the cases at CBCS and CGC but in my limited experience I've not had Newton rings or loose books from CBCS - they must be doing something different

99.5% of my sales spanning 20+ years have been raw comics.
I've had less than 10 returns that entire time.

0.1% of my sales have been CBCS.
No returns

0.4% of my remaining sales have been CGC
I have had 2 returns due to damage being "there's oil on the case" (i.e. Newton Rings)

So much for that theory of less returns for graded books. 😡

I have to chuckle every time I read posts here about submissions at CGC, when it's money CBCS isn't getting, and promotes the competition.

I've had one return for a graded book. It was this exactly. "There's fluid/oil in the case."

This is false. The Newton Ring effect with regards to CGC's slabs is a matter of the case and the inner well touching. It affects only optics in this case.
