If a date stamp is on the front cover how much does it affect the grade if said comic was 9.0 without the stamp would it bring it down to an 8.0 ect..

Date stamps do not usually affect grade - it was part of the history of the book sold on the newsstand.

@QuaBrot Thanks I thought that was what I had heard before that they didn't affect grading but wasn't sure.

Back in the day arrival dates either stamped on or hand written give valuable info plus MOST of the comics back then were inventoried controlled that way by many stores

Back in the 1980's I usually bought my comics at a couple different comic book stores and had a pull list too. But there was this small regular book store that had a nice magazine section. I would buy my Savage Sword of Conan magazines and other various comic related magazines there. The owner used to put a small date in pen on most of the books to keep track of his inventory. It is funny that I did not care back then because I loved the stories and art. I was just a teenager. Now I don't think I would buy them with the marks on them. I still have most of them today all bagged and boarded. Now when I drop money on books, I want them in perfect condition. Especially how dam expensive they are.

I like date stamps it adds character to the book. Although some things I do try to stay away from are if the stamps smeared or unreadable, done in grease pencil or felt marker. It's also like a book that has a small price written on the back cover in pencil. In my opinion it adds character to the book. Even If something like that could be cleaned and pressed out I will rather leave it for he history it adds to the book. These are just my opinions and I definitely understand those who want their books to look as unmarked as possible.

The marks on my books do bring back some good memories of my teen years, like knowing exactly where they were purchased. Those books will one day have that original owner feel to them in another 30 years. Lol.

I think some well known pedigrees are defined by their date stamps. Bethlehem is one of them I believe and there are others but I can't think of them off the top of my head right now.

White Mountains came to mind. This website is kind of interesting showing some of the markings clickable text

@JWKyle That was a real good description of the Pedigrees and their unique markings. Thanks for adding the link.

I believe this is true except in the case of a 9.8...i believe if the book is 9.8 candidate but has a date stamp, it will get a 9.6 but for 9.4 and lower, it is non-affecting. This was based off of a conversation that Steve Borock and I had a year or two ago so this could also have changed.

EDIT: after thinking about it, i think our conversation was about a small written date and not an actual stamp....that may or may not affect the grade differently

I love date stamps -- the clearer the stamp, the better.

Here's the back cover date stamp from a book that came out of a high grade silver age collection that was found by a dealer near Cleveland, Ohio a few years ago. I think this collection could have gotten a pedigree designation as all the books I got from it came back 8.5 to 9.6 with nothing less than off-white to white pages. According to the dealer, all these books were original owner, and judging by the same kind of date stamp on the back cover of every book, were probably bought from the same place over a period of time, (time frame of the collection was from about 1965 to 1971).
