The Bronze Age of Comics 1970 - 198417099

@southerncross - Back in 1970, you could by a 12-ounce glass bottle of soda for 15 cents. A candy bar would be 5 to 10 cents, and there were still penny candies like the little Tootsie rolls and Mary Jane taffy candies. So that $ 0.24 is a mystery. According to records, March 7th was a Saturday, so it couldn’t be the Sunday newspaper (there was a total solar eclipse that day too!). The world may never know. Back then, lots of places sold comics. Practically every corner drug store did (there were no chain drug stores), and every few blocks you’d see another local drug store.

Skin mag. Still a periodical, so no tax. |

@Byrdibyrd - Those were around 35 to 75 cents (and yes, I was too young to buy them anyway). A pack of cigarettes was about 35 to 40 cents, and would likely be taxed. One of the places I bought comics from had a soda fountain. Maybe a cone of pistachio or maple walnut ice cream (popular flavors from that time)?

I believe I was 6 years old at the time, so yeah, a bit young for skin mags. A fountain bevvie like a shake or malt might explain that charge, too. ... Now I want a shake, dammit. |

Madbomb, Captain America #193-200. Cap and Falcon are recruited by Henry Kissinger when the aptly named Madbomb goes off causing the populace to go berserk. Some elitists want to topple American democracy and one of the d-bags has it out for Cap as one of Cap's ancestors stopped homeboy's ancestor from warning the Limeys during the Revolution about Washington's advance. Eventually, the bad guys are defeated. Storyline marked the return of Jack Kirby to Marvel after spending the previous five years are DC. |

@Byrdibyrd it's my May 1972 collection, still about 40 books short. Just that I find other copies that I've got for a fraction of the price like $5-$10 so I buy the copy. And put them raw on my spinner rack to give that newsstand look. |

Some of my favorite stories. The end of Avengers #165 made the next 30-day wait near impossible. Fantastic action! |

I'm a #2. | BigRedOne1944 private msg quote post Address this user
The shocking story of 1974 concludes in Captain America #175 Captain America, the Falcon, and other allies storm the Secret Empire's forces, reveal the deception, and defeat Moonstone. Number One attempts to flee towards the White House, but Captain America tackles him and removes his hood; his face isn't revealed to the reader, but the following dialogue (and an absolutely shocked Captain America) makes his identity abundantly clear. "High political office didn't satisfy me! My power was still too constrained by legalities!" He does, however, admit that his plan to take over the government in a coup has failed. The helpless 'Number One' decides he'd rather die than be captured, and before Captain America can stop him, grabs a pistol and commits suicide. |
