UV protection for slabs17082

Collector Cerebus3000 private msg quote post Address this user
For your consideration:

He has designed his product for CGC slabs, but I am sure he could be convinced to tweak (if necessary) for CBCS slabs. They're not cheap, but if you want to display your grail it could be worth a look.

The price. That's like a gallon of gas, here in a second.

It's an interesting idea, especially depending on how a collector wants/has to display their books. A little much, price-wise, though.

Or you could just make a nice display case for your books with UV protection built in.

$22 for one side and just stuck on with adhesive dots...That's pretty steep. It might've been cool if it was like those self-adhesive tempered glass screen protectors you can get for your phone, though it's a pain when you get an air bubble or dust trapped underneath

Maybe just get a roll of this stuff and do several books for the same price

Interesting.

You can get a full frame with UV protection that is better (wider angle protection) for maybe $40?

The solution posted above seems good for those who already have a clean way to mount just the slab and prefer it that way.

One concern is coverage. Depends on display location but light hitting the edges is problematic.

If displaying a high value piece I’d choose a room with low UV exposure (UV protectant on windows / shades too), on a wall with zero direct light, with artificial lighting that is low UV, with a UV protective case that covers a wide angle. Then would also rotate the books in/out of display.

Coming back to cost, $22 may seem steep but if someone only wants to display a couple grails worth thousands, likely worth it.

I assume you haven’t worked with UV films before? ;-)

I tried putting tint on home windows. It's a pain in the ass and isn't as clean and easy an install as you might think.

@Bronte yeah, fun times.

Not to mention the options are static cling (water required, lots of water) or gunky adhesive…

@Davethebrave lol that last part was meant more as a joke. It’s also a pain to cut to just the right size. Not to mention you can see air bubbles or ripples in the product picture on Amazon

Exactly. If it's worth it to someone for whatever reason, they should do it.

Hah, just wanted to save someone from the idea that buying a roll of UV film to wrap comics might be a Bad Idea.

I think I know their next book gimmick: UV proof cover (slathered with sunscreen, cgc grade: spf 50).

I can totally see some clown on YouTube touting the benefits of UV film for slabs and proudly showing off a collection that looks like a cheap tint job on a junker car's rear window.

@dielinfinite That actually looks pretty good, and the guy said it cost about $5 each, which is a great price. That would be worth looking in to. Too bad his friend who cuts the film isn't interested in selling!

Dude also did the smart thing and put the UV tint roll on the windows instead of on the slabs.

Who really displays or exposes a book to any amount serious UV lighting for a long enough period to have any real effect on the book?

Barring having it in the window or outside in some goofy place........... Nobody

The whole UV thing is one of the most over rated things in the hobby

Again...... a colossal waste of time and money on such an insignificant issue IMHO

Or you could just get a cheap frame at Walmart, make a color copy of the comic cover and frame/display that. Leave your slabbed books in the dark where they are happiest.

ALL light is damaging to paper. UV wavelengths are just the most energetic and therefore most harmful. But all light is ultimately bad.

Not telling people what to do with their books. Just stating facts.

@BigRedOne1944 is $22 a colossal waste of money for someone upping the protection when displaying a rare comic? It appears reusable too.
