Yeah...Keep buying pgx books....DOH!17047

Knowing what everyone knows about PGX and having legitimate alternate grading choices, why would anyone even consider PGX? Who cares if they "seem" to be grading better....maybe it just seems that way.

PGX has damaged their reputation so severely that even genuine attempts at improvement will be considered as "even a broken clock is right twice a day" and errors will be considered as "more of their shady past coming to light".

What they should do it completely change their brand, name, ownership...everything.....and maybe have a chance at severing from their checkered past.

I am and will always be a risk taker when involved in areas that I feel comfortable & knowledgeable in (i.e. comics)

That said, the extremely rare purchases I've made of graded books have mostly been PGX.
My reasoning is they can be purchased at raw comic cost, often.
In fact, that's how I treat PGX books - as raw books.

I had been looking for this comic for years in better than mid-grade and could not find one (Dell Stooges #1). It is PGX graded, and I don't think I'm allowed to mention PGX grade on here, but suffice to say it will be broken out of case, pressed, and re-submitted. I do expect it to go down in grade; and yes, of course, the risk of color touch is real for any PGX book just as is the case with any ungraded book.

After grading, my expectation is somewhere in the VF range which is all I ever wanted to find in the 1st place. Every one I've ever found, previously, was ratty or overpriced

@Nuffsaid111 I too have purchased PGX books at raw prices and like you, cracked out and re-submitted. That is a risk I'm willing to take as well.if the price is right or for someone reason I can't find the book in CGC or CBCS case. I would never submit a raw book to PGX for grading though.

That may be an urban legend, but PGX was the one accused of swapping out customers' books.

Wasn't the original owner of PGX grading and selling his own books? Or maybe it was a business partner who was selling books for him? I can't recall the exact situation, but it was shady af. And I've heard that Rob Pillsbury was doing the same thing (locally, no internet sales) after he started with PGX. He may have stopped, but I don't have a way of confirming.

Was a PGX 9.8

Was a PGX 5.5

PGX 6.0. We'll see what happens.

From my experience, they're in the ballpark.

I've been to Rob Pillsbury's store here in Nokomis/Venice, FL. He has a lot of PGX books for sale, obviously. Also has a lot of CGC books for sale, and a few raws. Not a single CBCS slab in sight though. I thought that odd. He apparently is not a fan so he won't sell/consign/buy their slabs, nothing more or less.

He was, as of the last time I went there, grading and selling his own books he'd get in for subs, etc.. They weren't all 9.8's, but I have no real statistics for what the breakdown was. He also has a walk in service. I can bring a book and he'll shut the door and grade/encapsulate it right there. I haven't done it, dunno if I would. I'd be interested to see how he graded a book compared to what I thought it was or what CBCS/CGC had it at (would have to be something low dollar I didn't care about busting out and regrading.)

In person he doesn't seem that arrogant, but I guess you'd try not to be with an actual customer in front of you.

@xvipah @HexView thanks for the info!!

I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't trust anyone to be impartial when grading their own books raw, let alone when they put them in a slab (where you can't inspect them)!! Online, I ask for interior and exterior pictures and page counts if they are not provided. Hard to do that when it is slabbed. Once a seller has gotten my trust, then I usually don't ask those questions.

It depends on what I'm buying but, in general, I agree. If I'm buying a $5 book I don't really need more pics. If I'm buying a book worth hundreds, that's different.

Generally though, I don't buy raw books on, like, eBay. These forums, CGC forums, and once in a while trusted IG sellers (though I did recently sign up for whatnot so I'm checking that out now). Other than that it's pretty much all MCS.

This is why 3rd party graders exist at all, and it's clearly a lot of people with the same opinion, myself included. No way will I grade/slab my own books, no matter how unbiased I may think I can be.
