Cheaper ways to store Slabs?16977

Collector etapi65 private msg quote post Address this user
Not sure if this is universally available. I bought this filing cabinet at Habitat for Humanity at $28.00 (Though, I was there last week and prices have shot up; saw a similar cabinet for $60 now...they had 6 of these at $28.00 about a year and a half ago). It holds 180-200 slabs (on their side...which I'm not sure is the best?) in the three drawers. Also give me a surface for all these magnets that come from kickstarters. I enjoy supporting independent comic creators, while also trying to work on keys/collection

At that price, I would buy for sure...this is what the cost is for Canada not including shipping.

It does cover and close completely with some room. I remember the one I bought in store was a “medium”, but I just tried to look online and it doesn’t appear the one I bought is there. I would just double check the measurements of the bin if you go that route to make sure it clears it.

Crafty. However the foam board would drive me nuts. Foam board and styrafoam gives me the shivers when it is rubbed.

@BrianGreensnips - Have you constructed a slab-sized metal box? I remember seeing your metal short box for non-graded comics.

Are the folding directions for these boxes the same as a regular short box? A regular short box when folded flat is about 21"x25", or about 21"x50" for the entire surface area. Home depot has large sheets (48"x96" of corrugated plastic sheets for $30 each, or about $15.50 if purchased in quantities of 10s.

Someone can possibly make up to 4 boxes for less than the price of 2 premade boxes, or if someone were to buy a pack of these sheets (10) they can up to 8 boxes for less then the price of 2 boxes.

Anyone ever try to make their own plastic corrugated box?

I think it is the same instructions as a banker box. I have never assembled a comic short box except for the plastic ones shown.

I am not a hands on person so you can take risk of making it yourself. But there is one part that needs to be sealed because it's a seam in the box. You need to use something like epoxy because it would be a really bad thing to have a box filled with expensive books break on you. I wouldn't trust duct tape or super glue. But like I said I'm not a hands on guy. I prefer to just buy it made.

I believe it's free shipping if you reach a certain quantity.

Edit

Here is reciept on last purchase.

5 qty. Magazine graded size
10 qty. Cgc /cbcs slabbed boxes

Yeah, I think I'm going to try it out. I agree with not using duct tape/super glue. I've got some epoxy that should hold it tight.

That's not a bad price. It seems they've increased their prices by about $2/ box, but that's not bad considering they're sturdier than a regular short box.

"This box is made from water-resistant polypropylene. The material is also acid-free, antistatic, UV-resistant and vermin resistant and is considered archival and safe for long-term storage."

Polypropylene isn't acid free. The correct term is acid neutral. Not to be an ass, but there is a difference. It's still way better than cardboard.

I store my 30 most valuable slabs separately in the slab shipper boxes that MCS uses to ship them. I write total purchase cost on them and sometimes update the FMV for posterity. The rest go in a typical slab size comic box.

Is there any concern of these being easier to steal? I often worry about separating my most valuable, which may make them easier to target in case of a thief.

this thread is helping me as well. I dont have any slabbed comics. I have one waiting to be graded and plan on doing 3 or 4 more either late march or mid june...plus eying some on ebay (mostly cheap. the kingdom come issue where shazam and superman fought is very cheap with a good grade). plus with the possibility of having the chance to get 2 decent priced ones in 2 years. Id need to figure how to store them.

It could go that way, but I try to do the opposite. By having them separated out I store them in a different, less accessible place than the collection. Also they are in stacks of 5 and my wife knows that in case of fire or such, the stacks that are easiest for her to grab are the most valuable.

I write "dollar bin" and "readers" on my boxes of slabs. Throws those criminal types off the scent

@TheRealMrFreeze A strategist after my own heart. If you write "giveaway" on the best box you will know which one to grab in a fire.
