Cheaper ways to store Slabs?16977

Collector moodswing private msg quote post Address this user
Anyone have any creative ways to store your slabs? I was getting the bcw graded bins but I can't justify paying the current markup. I was thinking of just getting a plastic storage containers that could fit them. I do not have a lcs so whatever I get will have to be online or from a department store.

How about the cardboard graded comic boxes? That's all I used for years.

I use slab sized short boxes. Right there is my entire pile of about 250 slabs, about 25 to a box and easy to thumb through. You can also just find cardboard boxes about the correct size and those are free.

I use a plastic bin I got from target. I don’t think it was more than 8 bucks and you can fit a decent amount of them in there. Imagine them or similar stores have something along the same lines.

I use bankers boxes. Slabs lay in there sideways

I make my own boxes. All you need is a ruler, box cutter, foam board and duct tape...all from the dollar store.

Foam board $1.75

Duct tape $1.25

I have always heard to store books upright. Not sure if that is just an old wise tale or not.

@Jprez111

Do you know what size the bins are? Do they cover the entire slab?

The older slabs can curve when stored loosely upright.

It’s hard for me to understand. We invest in buying and getting our comics graded. The mark up on a quality product from Jeff at azamon is minuscule.

Yeah...

Just buy those BCW graded boxes that you already like. From I can tell you don’t appreciate the mark up. It comes with all materials now. If you can even find what you like at a mark up I’d suggest you get it.

I've got 6 of those plastic BCW boxes. When the prices reached over $45 + shipping is when I stopped buying and started making my own.

A quick search on Amazon brought this up...5 boxes for $300+ not including shipping...hard to justify when all it is, is a box.

For raws correct. Laying flat puts pressure on the spine. In a slab... no idea. I have them on edge in the box. Just not vertical. There is no pressure on them aside from the slab encasing them.

Anyone have any experiences here?

They are about $26 apiece + shipping if you buy five at a time from BCW. They are back ordered until about March 14th, but that is only about two weeks.

I’m not a rich guy, but think about what a graded comic book box may hold in ones collection.

Not sure if this is universally available. I bought this filing cabinet at Habitat for Humanity at $28.00 (Though, I was there last week and prices have shot up; saw a similar cabinet for $60 now...they had 6 of these at $28.00 about a year and a half ago). It holds 180-200 slabs (on their side...which I'm not sure is the best?) in the three drawers. Also give me a surface for all these magnets that come from kickstarters. I enjoy supporting independent comic creators, while also trying to work on keys/collection

At that price, I would buy for sure...this is what the cost is for Canada not including shipping.
