Mylar Suppliers16923

Has anybody else our there recently had difficulty finding Mylar bags? Everyone I used to buy eGerber products (Mylites 2 and Full Backs) are sold out with no idea when they will be back in stock. I recently found bags unlimited which has some reasonably priced Mylar bags, but their boards are like a 1/4 inch too short so I've been using BCW boards on top of their recommended board to prevent the books from getting caught on the edge of the board. Just curious if anybody else has been running into similar issues and what solutions and or suppliers they've found. |

They’ve been harder to find since the demand for collectibles skyrocketed. You can still find them on ebay a bit more expensive than normal but not too outrageously so

Yes, my comic store canceled my Full back order so I called egerber directly. They told me they weren't going to start getting stock until April but would not take a pre-order. It's super tough to get without paying scalper prices on ebay and amazon.

https://forum.cbcscomics.com/topic/16307/page/1/e-gerber-disappointment/ Disappointed but not surprised to hear they don't expect boards back in stock until April now. I'm still planning on doing a group order when the opportunity is there. |

I happen to have dozens, possibly even hundreds, of 4 mil tab-top Mylars left over from when I swapped out my longboxes for short. The shortboxes are narrower so I had to re-bag a lot of the books. The Mylars are used, obviously, but would folks be interested in buying them? Of course, I won't sell any that are unsightly or damaged. If there's interest, it'll take me a few days to dig them up from wherever they ended up, so you'll have to bear with me.

Ok, so its not jus me, lol. Here is link for bags unlimited, I ve been using their 2mil Mylars and they are pretty good. https://www.bagsunlimited.com/category/137/comic-collection-supplies I tried their .040" backer boards and they are just too short, the comic is always coming off the board in one corner and when you fold the flap down the board is below the back of the bag so you are folding the bag and the flap in order to get a tight closure. clickable text Ive been spoiled by Mylar and cant go back to polypro on anything other than new releases, lol. |

I remember trying to warn people a year or so ago about this issue and E Gerber and being mocked and told I was wrong, to the extent I even brought one reseller into the forum to answer questions. People did not want to listen when told prices were rising fast, supply was a problem and it was headed towards a crisis. oh well.....

Also, I said I'd stop buying non-mylars...I bought 3000 bags board and the way the quantities worked out ended up with an additional 1000 boards figuring I'd just order uneven the next time around. Now I can't get bags. Just didn't have the money to put towards this at the time. |

For anything under about a $20 book, I use cheaper boards from Matt's Baseball. They work well IMO. The Mylar really makes them pop especially when I am setting up at shows. |

A little off-topic, has anyone tried the non-archival e.gerber products? Or know if they have those in-stock? I tried to swear off non-mylar, but the difficulty in acquiring them now that I have the money to purchase more is leaving me in a bit of a bind.

You can still get Mylites at the standard prices directly from EGerber if you’re ok with buying in bulk and waiting for any back orders they may have.

Quote:Originally Posted by Reelgee The mylars and boards (half-back or full backs) are specifically created to not damage your comic. The bags are made of a Dupont created polyester (type of polyethylene, more specifically BoPET). No acid, no degassing, gas impermeable and should essentially never break down as long as not left in direct sunlight for extremely long periods of time. The boards are specifically manufactured to be pH neutral and not degas as a result of chemicals used in the production. "Normal" bags are a polypropylene which is gas permeable and degrades over time (they get wavy). Though still considered archival material, there's a protection drop-off and the bags have to be replaced regularly (I'd say no longer than 10 years, but probably every 5). Traditional, cheap boards, degas all kinds of chemicals over sub-decadal scales that can damage comics. The issue I see with your method is actually the board you're using. A polyethylene bag in a mylar should still get the mylar protection from gas permeability. But since it's gas impermeable trapped inside the mylar, you shouldn't be locking it in there with a non-archival board that's degassing chemicals into the system. Of course, there's an ongoing discussion about comics that also degas chemicals from the ink/paper used (particularly moderns, the paper quality is...questionable at best). Lock those into something that's fully archival and don't give them a chance to degas chemicals from manufacturing could negatively impact the material, long-term. I would never put a brand new comic in a mylar; needs time to breath and release the highest chemical concentrations first. The ink is also crap quality and the "shiny" side of normal boards is less harsh for color rubs if the back cover is colored. Having some time of "storage period" in cheaper bag/board combo for modern comics may let them degas and allow the ink to better set before putting them in the mac-daddy archival materials. How long? No idea, anyone here a chemist? |

thanks for the intel very helpful, the reason i ask is that i started rebagging my books and i did find that i have some still in bag 30 plus old some was like you said ink imprint on boards, bags yellow, books stuck together, books were bending creating spine tics.after some research i decided to go with 2mil mylar from bcw and their boards. then i found egerber and found it was cheaper per 1000 bags so i change to them but kept bcw boards. i got samples of egerber boards and found that putting two bcw together was thicker than egerber fullback didnt stop to think about the gas stuff in the mylar bags plus i like how they look with the books. So i guess my question to u is bcw boards up to par in your opinion, and what if you mix the two(full/half back front, bcw back)to get more thickness just curious.
