Happy Independence Day everyone....

So I am getting some older books ready for submission and doing my due diligence, I checked the current grading fees for both CBCS & CGC.

It appears that the last round of price increases now makes grading pre-1975 books 5.00 more to grade with CBCS? Is this correct?

@Nearmint67 from what I see, yes and no.

CBCS allows for a much higher FMV for that $40 payment (Vintage tier). So, if your book has an estimated FMV of $300 then, yes, it appears that CBCS is $5 more. However, for a $401 FMV book, CBCS is actually $40 cheaper since CGC maxes their FMV at $400 in their Economy tier.

Yep. I see that.
So I would need to know what FMV is on each book. But there's a catch. What if I think the FMV is 400.00 and CGC thinks it's 500.00
Or if I think the FMV is 900.00 and CBCS thinks it's 1,250.00
Then it gets bumped up to the next tier.
No way to know what the grading company's idea of FMV is.

Always submit under the lowest tier and let the grading company bump. Also, bear in mind that the fair market value you declare is the value your submission is insured for while at the grading company.

Yepper... that declared value also affects the shipping costs unless you have your own Fed-Ex account.

How does it affect the shipping cost?

It changes the amount charged for the insurance if being shipped through USPS.

Oh I see. I normally just declare the highest possible for the tier so I don't notice that

So. I recently gave blood to a blood mobile. Turns out the process isn't as bad as I thought it would be. They even sent me an email telling me where my blood went to help others. Mine went to a city close by. So it actually helped my local community vs some city I have no relationship with. (Granted helping anybody is better than nobody)

So along with volunteering to a cause, (which I suggest people do at some point in their lives, its a good learning experience and helping others is a positive thing in general) giving blood is prolly something I will regularly do now.

Edit

Copy and paste of where my blood went.

Your Whole Blood donation was a perfect match for a patient in need and was sent to Broward Health. Thank you for giving the gift of life!

There was an actual one of those. For the forum I suggest "poorly thought-out Tuesday".

Which do you think has more spec potential? 1st Peggy Carter
Or
1st Clea Strange?

Since Peggy has already been in a number of movies it seems a little weird to put on a spec list. I could see some Captain Carter related books bumping if they decide to put her in another show or movie, but she's already made her appearance as well.

Clea's first appearance is also the first appearance of Dormmamu so it should have some solid value in general, but also is probably past the point of spec. It's already pricey in highish grades.

I was just over at the CGC forum (it's rare but it happens) and people actually send slabs back to correct Newton Rings. Does anyone else find this bizarre?

Yes, I find Newton Rings bizarre. I also find it bizarre that people send them back to the company that sent them the Newton Rings to begin with all the while expecting different results on the return.

Not really. Some folks on this forum send stuff pack because the label omitted what they saw as important information and the case was fine. People are not always predictable.

This happens more often than some may realize. Kind of a head scratcher when it's a characters 1st appearance, gets a new costume or new powers etc... and that info doesn't make it onto the label.
I had to do it with CGC a few years ago for Magnificent Ms. Marvel # 5 2nd Print had an Homage cover with new costume. And the label said was legacy #. They did the right thing though. Sent a shipping label, fixed the labels and shipped them back to me within a couple of weeks for free.

I just saw Roy Thomas will be at the Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con in September. Does anybody know his current signing rate for a raw sig? I would like to plan accordingly on how many books to bring.

Thanks in advance!

Why would a new grading service honor coas if they're trying to gain credibility and start off on the right foot in the slabbing industry?

**** image of egs slab removed by moderation ****

Are they just trying to make as much money as they can short term and know their business model will implode within a few years?
