I have a $199 dealer membership.

I renewed it for the almost sole purpose of the grader's note. Probably 75% of the books that I am interested in seeing the notes come up as Notes Unavailable. Also, after you check about five or six books, the web site cuts you off for an as yet determined amount of time for "safety" reasons. That can be circumvented by using a VPN. However, if you don't already have one, that is another expense and a pain in the ass.

I do not see myself renewing once this one expires.

I have no interest in selling it but a trade could certainly happen. It’s the trade dress.

@Bronte, @DrWatson, thanks. It’s rare I can’t see why their books get the grades. I happen to have 2 that baffle me.

@Bronte my concern is more to do with the tax treatment by MCS. MCS will record the cost of acquiring your books as whatever they paid for Hulk 1.

Let’s assume they paid $15k for Hulk1 and trade to you for IH181. They will have that Ih181 now at $15k cost… exactly what they paid for Hulk 1. When they sell it they will file that cost ($15k) as their basis with the IRS. The IRS (and MCS) are indifferent tax-wise between cash sales or trade.

The IRS will see you receiving the hulk 1 as getting $15k in value (call it cash) for your IH181. So they will want to know your basis (your investment in the IH181).

Regardless of forms that MCS has anyone fill out (or not fill) I am confident they are keeping the score on their cost/basis… and every basis has an opposite that the IRS looks for…

My concern would be a potential audit. There are no tax benefits on trades (no like-kind exchanges in these cases)…

I raise this now before you complete the transaction… or check with a real accountant. I am NOT an accountant and none of this is tax advice… more just flagging to make sure you are aware and if necessary getting some expert help.

That certainly complicates matters. I can't say that I fully understand what your trying to convey. I might need to read it a few more times to even begin to form an intelligent question.

@Bronte if you trade your comic for another $15,000 comic then the IRS will treat that as you selling your comic for $15,000 and then spending the cash immediately to buy the other comic.

So they will want taxes from your $15,000 sale minus whatever you paid for that book.

Cash or trade it’s all the same to them.

My main point, partly conveyed by how confusing it all is, is to talk to a tax expert before completing the deal.

Thank you for dumbing it down for me. I need to talk to my accountant about my tax return anyway, I'll ask her what she thinks. Thank you for bringing this up.

@Bronte no prob. Doesn’t mean the deal is necessarily any worse than a sale and then purchase. Better to know than be surprised.

@Bronte I'm pretty sure your total income is important in the equation as well. For example a person with no other income could, I believe, sell $15,000 worth of comic books without incurring a tax liability. While a person with $500K in other income would incur the fullest possible tax liability.

@EbayMafia absolutely. While the treatment of the transaction would be the same, the extent of taxation (or not) would differ.

What did I do??!!! - lol!!

Just bought a 1920's single edge shaver - blades are difficult to find but I have 50 on the way from the UK for $25CAD (GEM blades to match the shaver!) - way more expensive than my normal double edge blades (100 for $8-$15) but each blade should get 5 to 10 shaves from it - will be fun to give this a try!!

the singe edge blade is like a box cutter or scrapper blade - only sharper

not my picks -these are from the listing - hope it arrives as it shows

lol!! no! not shaving is not an option! ---since I've started shaving again I've gone down a rabbit hole in a bad way!! - this will be my 11th shaver (winning a 12th right now) -most of them vintage with a few new double edge razors in the mix!!
My fav so far are my 1939-1946 Gillette fat handle (really the 1946to51 too as they are 99% same design)

Right now trying to win a Rolls Razor - basically a 1 inch straight razor but comes in it's own travel tin with a stone and strop for sharpening

Looks like it was never used!!

Seriously asking for a friend.

If I have 40 silver age regular comics and get them graded by CBCS, how many slabs can they safely fit into one box for shipping? I'm looking to submit the exact number per submission, don't want it split up.

CBCS Boomhauer HeinzDad private msg quote post Address this user
@DrWatson, my magic number right now is 22-24. The few times I’ve gone over that I’ve had problems. It seems like they ship horizontally stacked like an open side of a short box when you get into the 30 count. At 2 dozen they’ll show up stacked flat. I haven’t had a problem there.

In cartoons, why do tracers/trackers (like the Bat tracer/tracker or Spidey's tracers/trackers) all have little flashing lights on them? Wouldn't that be a give away to the person they're tracking?
