@DrWatson X Men # 148 was also my first X Men book I bought off of the Spinner rack. I think I bought every issue after that to about #230.

Watchmen and Dark Knight were huge in the industry but they broke new ground when they were released in TPB format and called "graphic novels". By the end of the 1980's both books were instrumental in carving out a place for comic books in college bookstores, college courses and even the bookshelves of non-comic collectors.

I love a lot of these picks. There are just too many that come to mind. Here are some of my favorites. Savage She Hulk #1 One of Stan Lee's last great characters he created. X Men #148 for the same reason as @DrWatson Daredevil #181. A pretty action filled book by Frank Miller and Klaus Janson. I was pretty shocked that Bullseye killed Elektra and how he went about it. This story really stuck with me back then. Daredevil #191. Daredevil visits Bullseye in the hospital. Pretty dark story. ASM #298. The beginning of Todd McFarlane's amazing run on ASM. I just love so many of those covers. |

Once I finalize my 5 picks, I'm thinking of making a display of the books in the home office, separating them out as an "Essential 80's" display. Of all the books listed in this thread so far, I think there is only 1 that is outside of the "affordable" range for the average collector. That would be TMNT #1. And as @DavetheBrave might be inclined to point out, the extreme difference in value is not because the book is so much more significant than every other on the list. It's purely because the book was printed in small quantity and is in limited supply.

Quote:Originally Posted by EbayMafia Inclined? Compelled? Programmed? Extremely rough math suggests issue value of Watchmen 1, for example, is currently around 30-50% of TMNT 1’s issue value. So you’re correct, scarcity drives vast majority of the current pricing gap. I would roughly agree with the gap (ie TMNT is not “very” overvalued) though they were more like 1:1 three years ago… Cultural impact is sometimes hard to measure. I like music analogies so will use another one. There are bands that are “level 20” popular among the general population but “level 80” popular among musicians. Those bands may have a much bigger cultural impact than album sales indicate, through disproportionate impact on other (eventually popular) bands. TMNT has huge general popular impact (direct) whereas Watchmen, DK and Sandman have massive direct and indirect impact. Hard to compare. |

@EbayMafia Also, my home office has three of my five picks displayed already. One is a raw copy (have multiple) and two are part of a rotation.

Okay, here’s my take. Some of these have already been mentioned, so that must mean something. Not in any particular order: Action Comics #544 (DC, 1983) - This 45th Anniversary issue re-boots two of Superman’s biggest bad guys, Brainiac and Lex Luthor. Amazing Spider-Man #252 (Marvel, 1984) - The historic first appearance of the black symbiote suit that eventually spawned Venom, Carnage, and how many others? Marvel took this one to the bank with numerous spin-off series and even movies. Batman #357 (DC, 1983) - Jason Todd is introduced, and he will eventually become the next Robin. If that’s not a big enough deal, there’s also a cameo of Killer Croc, a new villain that becomes popular enough to appear onscreen in the Suicide Squad movie. Batman #428 (DC, 1989) - If replacing Dick Grayson as Robin was a shock, how about having him brutally beaten to death by the Joker 6-years later (don’t worry, he comes back with a cool hoodie; only Batman’s parents stay dead in the comics). I always thought that this was DC’s answer to ASM #121. And now for something completely different… Aliens #1 (Dark Horse, 1988) - There have been how many sequels/prequels to the Alien movie? Their first appearance in comics has to count for something. And I bet a lot more people have seen at least some of these movies, than the DC movies by Zack Snyder. |
