Collector schmoff private msg quote post Address this user
I have a hulk 181 CGC .5 with no MVS

i was thinking of pressing/cleaning and a regrade

does cbcs give QUALIFIED grade options like CGC does?

what do you think is my best route to regrade?

it is also CGC SS roy thomas so thats another wrinkle

CBCS does not do “qualified”

A .5 will stay a .5 with a press, but may present better.

You’re signature would need to go through CBCS Verification and would no longer be “authentic/witnessed” instead it would be a “verified” signature. Verification is not a guarantee even though it is already confirmed by CGC as authentic/witnessed. Trust, but verify and CYA.

I think your only route is to send it to CGC for all that work. They will keep the signature and give it a qualified grade.

Does CBCS not honor CGC witnesses sigs anymore? I know there was a time period where they didn’t, but last I heard it was back on.

@HulkSmash @soonerjudd81

CBCS DOES honor CGC witnessed signatures. There was a short bit in 2019 where they did not honor CGC signatures dated after that year but they have since reversed that decision

It looks like it'll cost you $40 for a press and another $58 for the regrade under the quickstream tier. The turnaround doesn't look that bad, it's estimated at 12 weeks total. CBCS will honor the CGC signature, leave it in the slab when you mail it out to them. You'll get a CBCS yellow label with a notation that the MVS is missing.

Can you show us pictures of the front and back cover, it'll help get an idea of how much pressing and cleaning can improve the appearance?

Here's a couple photos of a copy I found sold on Ebay. The only difference is yours would have a yellow label and information on the witnessed signature signee and date either above or below the caption about the missing marvel value stamp:

According to oversteet 2.5 is the best you can get
..my opinion depends on what you bought book for and what our want for it. Anything like that is a shot in the dark

I got these 3 for $1600, all are missing MVS and have not been cleaned or pressed
i figure they would get a bump if i went for the qualified grade
they are for my PC and not looking to sell

If you want a higher grade then yes, you will have to go with CGC’s Qualified grade. CGC does to hybrid Green/Yellow labels so you can retain the witnessed signature and get a grade that ignores the missing MVS. CBCS does not offer Qualified grades

eventually they will be passed down to my kids so i just figured a higher grade would be more valuable

@schmoff Higher grades are generally more valuable but a qualified grade muddies the waters a bit because the grade is artificially inflated.

Think of it like this, a certain car in Excellent condition is worth $15k. A qualified grade is like saying “this car is in excellent condition IF IT WEREN’t for so-and-so flaw.” You can’t rightly expect it to be worth the full $15k.

there might be a bit of psychological salesmanship at work seeing the higher qualified grade unless the person you’re selling to is unfamiliar with grading because then the unqualified grade is obscured to them

I have a few cgc books I'd like to cross over; I think they would present better.

Have a related question: Would it be possible for CBCS to complete a grade pre-screen on a CGC slabbed book or would it have to be fully removed?

This option would be for someone who would rather have a CBCS slab over a CGC re-holder.

If the viagra is working you should be well over a 9.8. xkonk private msg quote post Address this user
@WMorse I know for press screening that they evaluate the book in the slab. Makes me think they do the same for grade screen but I'm not sure.

Today, I did a "bend" test on a CGC case. The following sound would send shivers down anyone's spine. 😳
