Inspired by Woodstock, other music festivals followed. Bull Island - near universally regarded as the worst music festival of all time - was originally planned for my hometown of Evansville, Indiana in 1972.

There was NO WAY local politicians in Evansville or surrounding counties were going to allow 60,000 hippies in for three days. So the promoters were bounced around from one location to another, finally landing in swampy islands under the jurisdiction of Illinois but only accessible through Indiana.

It was a disaster. The crowd size swelled to 200,000. Not near enough toilers or food vendors. "Easier to buy drugs than food and water" was the common theme. Acts cancelled. It rained - a lot. On the final day the crowd set fire to the stage....

I wanted to go but just a senior in High School my parents said "oh hell no!" and that was it.

RIP Michael Lang. You planned an event that was transformative for an entire generation.
