What Are You Watching?: Part II16640

Masculinity takes a holiday. EbayMafia private msg quote post Address this user
I've been watching The Nevers on HBO. If I had known that it was created by Joss Whedon I would have checked it out sooner...his work tends to pleasantly surprise. Best I can describe it is a Victorian Era/Steampunk version of X-men or New Mutants. I'm guessing it probably comes from a comic book that I never knew about?

@EbayMafia I believe it’s a Whedon original idea. He has been removed from the project since, though. Joss has essentially been canceled.

? with or without good reason?

I heard he was by some of the actors thought of as really terrible to work with as a director (from various articles from "justice league" talking about his vs. Snyder cut) but would that get him cancelled?

I'm a huge Firefly fan and (closeted) Buffy & Angel fan ( i guess I'm out now though) but I don't know much about him personally other than his comic book background and etc. and I don't know why he'd be cancelled for that regardless of whether or not you like his story arcs ...

@dfoster43 It really came down when he defended, or tried to defend his treatment of the cast of ‘Justice League’ in a recent interview. His own words made him sound even worse.

Hmmm interesting. Well all the stuff I was reading on various "geeks" sites etc. were all from their perspective. I don't remember one of them quoting or interviewing Joss.

They didn't go into a lot of details but I guess from what I read I can see why they'd be miffed.

@dfoster43 you can maybe find more detail elsewhere, but his wikipedia page is a reasonable place to start

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joss_Whedon#Accusations_of_workplace_harassment

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joss_Whedon#Marriage_and_claims_of_marital_infidelity

There's "really terrible to work with", then there's "threatening people's careers", and then there's "wasn't allowed in the same room as the underage actress".

That first part, yeah pretty convincing that he's got some 'splainin to do.

Here is the interview I was referring to. A couple things:

1. It would have been nice to get his side of the story in a straightforward question and answer format. In-between, there seems to be a lot of conjecture here, from the interviewer.

That said, Joss does a lot of deflecting and ultimately, does not sound good.

2. I was mistaken in the order of events. Joss was removed from “The Nevers” as a result of the investigation Warner Brothers made into the allegations made against him on the set of ‘Justice League’. That is, before this interview was published.

It’s a long read, but worth it, if you are at all curious:

Hollywood is full of people all more or less pursuing something as treasured as Golem's ring. When they get to wear it for a while it's not uncommon for them to lose of bit of their sanity and humanity in the process. They tend to be fairly reckless with the emotions of others. In the article I read, there were a lot of cringe-worthy things but nothing I saw that warranted un-personing.

I'm not sure what "un-personing" is, but isn't Whedon's issue that the public knows what kind of person he is now?

Joss Whedon… he definitely butchered Justice League vs the Snyder cut… seems that alone warrants un-personing.

I’d say the “butchering” of Justice League wasn’t his fault. WB wanted a two parter condensed to two hours.

It’s going to take a lot of alcohol for me to slog through four hours of Snyder. I’ll get to it one day.

By the way, The Nevers took a massive turn at the start of episode 6. Episode 5 ends in the Victorian era and episode 6 starts in something that resembles the future from Terminator. I had to go to bed shortly after it started, but I'm looking forward to getting back to it.

My opinion doesn't mean much but I LOVED IT and doubly so when comparing directly to the released Whedon version. And that Post scene in the future with Dark Superman ... god I know its impossible but I WISH Snyder and all the gang were able to make whatever it was Snyder's vision was for the next step.

I think you misquoted (or not) but I agree. Wife and I both enjoyed the Snyder cut (and massive improvement vs Whedon’s).

Since I seem to be the only one watching The Nevers, I will give away a few plotlines below that I don't think will ruin the experience. Just finished season one, which is the only season to date, hopefully there will be more.

Potential Spoilers:
The title "The Nevers" is likely a play on "The Eternals". It's being presented the way The Eternals probably should have been...longer form with more nuance and detail but broken into 1 hour episodes. There seems likely to be an "Edge of Tomorrow" time loop involved and a long-term battle with a covert slow-motion alien invasion.

Nevers sounds interesting - but I don't have the streaming service for it...and likely 'never' will!

A great show that unfortunately wouldn’t be the same (or nearly as good) if produced today.

I watched all 3 available episodes of "From" on Amazon Prime last night.

Not bad. Creepy. Sort of Stephen King-y without all the endless backstory and proselytizing. Maybe more Dean Koontz-y.

The metaphors and thematics start coming out in episode 3, but they're pretty easy to ignore and the creepy factor is quite good.

Ignore any perceived similarities to "The Village" they're only cursory.
