COOL THREAD! Long story semi-short: Many of you know that my few real passions include comics and the Grateful Dead's music. So...Tim Truman(Timothy to some)has always been one of my favorite artists from the 1980's and on. I was trying to get a piece of art he did on HA of Hawkman and was outbid. Frustrated, I emailed Tim and asked if he had any of his Grateful Dead almanac art left. He said "You are in luck, the newest piece just got back from the Dead: "Alligator" (1st lyrics written by Robert Hunter for the band) and I could buy it if I was so inclined. I said to myself "No f'ing way!" and made the deal then and there over email. I get the piece in and it's amazing! So I call Tim to thank him and asked him what he was doing for the next issue of the GD Almanac. He told me he had no idea what song lyrics to illustrate next. Right away I asked if I could have dibs to buy the piece once it was done, no matter what song he decided to do. Tim was so cool, he said sure I could and just asked me to email him a list of song titles I would like and, if he liked one, he would do it. So I did just that when we hung up the phone. We were on the phone for about 45 minutes talking comics, kids, movies and music. While we were on the phone we even traded pictures of our kids over email. Cut to two months later and I get a package from Tim with the art work and HE DREW MY DAUGHTER INTO IT! Not only that, but it was a song that I always sang her to sleep to as a child: Standing On The Moon. Such a great lyric for daddy/daughter: "A lovely view of heaven but I'd rather be with you". Will not part with this amazingly personal piece unless I give it to my daughter. It's such a long piece, I broke it up into two pics to show off. I hope you all like it half as much as I do, Tim is such an amazing artist and writer! And I love mixing Grateful Dead with comics! ![]() ![]() |

Imagine if you more or less has to make up your own hobby as you went? No guidlines, no experts, no books on how , no forums...just figure it out for yourself by win and lose.Comics are easy, you can ask an expert, read a book or join a forum only too filled with mega experts who can teach you an facet of the hobby you might feel interests you. In the late eighties I got the idea to revist those girls that were on every poster and wall in the seventies, the Cowboys cheerleaders. I jumped in just as things were ending for the Landy era, Jones bought the team, and things were in a flux with a new director, fourteen girls resigned the day Jones bought the team etc. I rapidly learned there were trading cards, playing cards frisbees, lunch boxes, model vans and even a few comic books even. Also right at that time Score, Enor and limerock all introduced card sets for the squad. As I worked my way into it I found my name on a select list of friends and family inivted to an annual talent show the girls do for their family and friends ....a select invitation, so I went each year despite the six hour drive each way. Somewhere around 95 at the show, I went to the lobby during intermission, and noticed a card table set up outside the door of the venue. A former DCC sat there with a few cardboard boxes..so I went up and asked what she was offering. In the box were five of those jackets....all squad used for multiple reasons, many with tears, ruined pockets, zippers falling off etc. They were a mess ....she said here take a look 65.00 yikes, and in 1995 terms that was a decent chunk for a damaged and used jacket. As I sorted I noticed one jacket had a garmet tag that had not torn off and I began reading...MP, KZ, Deon Sharp, Shelly Roper...I was a little rattled for sure. MP-was either Marnie Pizzitola, or the now Deceased Michelle parma, KZ= was kelly zaloudek who cheered in...83. Deon Sharp cheered in 88 , Marnie and Shelly during the late eighties and early nineties. I knew those girls names and had met both Shelly and Marnie, as well as Michelle parma prior to her tragic death. ![]() Went back inside for the show and to ponder a bit...and the director announced that over the past 30 years there had been 11 dallas cheerleaders that had cheered for five years or more. In my mind I guess I think the girls wth the best following would have cheered the lonest and met and made the most friends. Further any girl that cheers for five years or more gets a special yellow rose charm that is a match for the one on the jacket back. Even more to the point , between the five year girls in the room that night and ones I knew how to reach out to, I could get 7 signatures of the 11 possible with no further research. Went back out to see if any of the jackets were there and not one was even looked at, except by me. I was the only one who bought one that night when i left and checked. So I went to work that night at the show gathering signatures...in person or working with select former DCC by direct mail correspondence. We did not have personnal messaging and what not then so it was doing it all by snailmail for a while. The jacket went to Miami to visit Dorie braddy, now the director of the dolphins squad, as well as twice more back to texas stadium to girls working in the cowboys front office who were five year vets. On one such visit she took the jacket down the hall to a rookie group meeting and let the entire group of 16 rookies all sign..that was in 1990 thanks to Tandra (tinker) Cromer Johnson. Over time it has been given 53 signatures, many in person, and had some great traveling ....the concept of an item now bought in the pro shop for ungodly price, is how the majority do their collecting. I have seen this one from being bare to being signed by 53 former dcc, of which 13 now are known to have been five year girls...and nowdays there are 40 5 year girls known. I have an appointment next week to have it signed by #40 madeline Massingill. If you watch the series ...Making the Team, you have at some point seen the director, Kelli Mcgonagill Finglass, a five year former herself , and Judy Trammell, four year member, and has been choreographer since 1988. Both womens names are signe don the piece with the years they too cheered. Along with those names are Stacie Drew the dallas cheerleader that married Tracy Lawrence, for a minute. The name Brooke wicker appears, she is the group historan and recently spent two years curating a display for the squad for the Smithsonan....Lisa Ligon appears on the jacket, she founder of Purrfect Angelz, as well as one of her former dancers Amber Strauss who is still a good friend of mine. Shelly Boston Bramhall also is on the jacket, now a director for the Alumni association, as well as Regina tucker a five year girl who works in NFL alumn relations. And then it got interesting....as most know, over the past 16 years the squad has done a series called Making the Team, which has helped launch many of these women into the limelight...be it sarah Shahi famous actress, Jill Jones also now an actress, Melissa Rycroft strickland of Batchelor fame, or Madeline Massingill one of the most popular DCC of the series era. With every blessing has come problems...and time has slowly proven this correct. Now when the girls do public appearances they are so surrounded with security all you can get is a signature. Photo opps are possible but tougher. The girls are forbidden by contract to sign anything that is NOT dcc licensed and sold merchandise, which means either a calendar or squad photo. They are only allowed to sign first names now due to stalking issues that have been quite public. They eliminated the family and friends show and stadium practice, which were the two events I used to attend annually. It has become a locked house with very few ways to get in...it helps for me I know the ropes and have some "ins" and help both on the squad and within the organization, but it has become quite difficulat to do what I do. So when you said you wouldnt sell that jacket without a lost of money, you were rather on target as I doubt I could repeat what I have done nowdays. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Around that same time they switched poms....and sold off the game used sets. You could buy them for 100 a set in 1994 limit two sets. I got one.My set belonged to Christina carr, ironicaly one of the first three DCC I met in person. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

@Darkseid_of_town That is an amazing story, tracking down all those signatures after happening on the jacket. Also, mad respect to all the ladies. Cheer is a serious sport and cheerleaders should be treated like the athletes they are, and not just objectified. |

It is a massively tough circle to get into and girls operate like a sisterhood, noone talks,or helps outsiders. they keep their friends lists private and make it hard to get an opening anywhere. I have begun working on a new one for them to sign...I got a hat on ebay curiously signed by Chales Haley, Herschel walker and Barry switzer, as well as Dallas cheerleader Nicki Hale. I have begun working on it as well = ![]() ![]() |

I wouldn't be able to pick just one thing. There are a handful of things my surviving heirs will have to decide what to do with. My nephew is Kyle Starks. He's worked in the comic field on a number of projects of his own. He's best known for his run as writer and sometime artist on Rick and Morty. He's done a few things for me. I'm keeping them. I'm a big fan of John Watson's art. He did a marvelous sketch cover of my granddaughter as Wonder Tot. Forever in the family..... It is also in a CBCS ART label slab, but picture slabbed not already saved. The Gold Key first issues are incredibly difficult to find in high grade. Took decades to find NM range copies of Dr.Solar, Magnus, Mighty Samson and Space Family Robinson. My kids will be selling them when I'm gone. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Above where I posted the pictures one shows the garmet tag....Small, in a women's . I couldnt fit inside it if I wanted. When I got it the zipper was also not working and I spent hours fixing it until I got it zipped. Now it sits around the display case, with a cardboard holder to keep it opened out...although I am heavily considering getting a jersey frame and pinning it down inside that | ||

It is this group who appear at paid appearances and higher dollar events. They are veterans with years of experience and who know the ropes. I need to run the list again, but I have a feeling the ALL stars this year are all five year girls . Adding them to the jacket will be a plus ten, with girls who all are no longer contracted by the squad and can sign their full names on non DCC licensed articles, although I have a guess the jacket might be deemed an exception. (As the squad originally sold it) I know that I am looking forward to if madeline can line up Alexis Peterson, Cici,Brianna, Savannah, Khalyn, Stephanie, Amy, Danielle etc. I printed a stack of 8 x 10s of those girls to go along with the jacket and a book I am sending for signatures in case any magially appear.! |
