@EbayMafia @Bronte Super nice books. I love the green on that Showcase #56 cover. Too bad I haven't seen these show up on the ongoing "trading" thread. 😄

I'm going to have to do something to acquire a Swampy #25. It's my last Con Job key.

Gotcha, @Bronte. I must been so blinded by the green of that cover that I didn't notice the missing image.

You guys way lost the race to buy the Crisis #4, 9.6 last night for 50 bucks.

You know what the worst part about that book with me is??? I had a friggin pile of them in the lab that I just neglected and time ran short. They were a stack of MCS 7.0- .5 that were 9.0 plus with attention.

I'm going to post an image that isn't mine.

I love the character as much as the next guy but that cameo his weak. Reading 25 I had to google the frame Constantine was in. I understand the crew designed him after Sting but it was a wordless frame with no trench coat or ciggy.

I still need a 25, and I’ll get one. The point being is the random Crisis 4 is awesome. By random I mean cost.

After seeing that 12-month-before-first-appearance "cameo", I would not spend the money on a slabbed copy.

I won this for $13.50. I'm thinking of giving the seller the option to cancel the order since the price is so low. After fees he'll get $11 and still be at a loss for grading expenses. The seller also is new to Ebay and maybe needs a bit of a break on this one. What do you guys think I should do?

I'm definitely not giving it to @EbayMafia or @Heinzdad.

@flanders

If he asks you to cancel, sure, do him a favor. However, I would not offer it to him. I sell stuff on ebay and put in a minimum of grading fees on books I don't want to take a loss on. On some books though I start the bidding at 5 bux to generate hits. I knowingly take the risk of screwing myself but do it in the hopes of getting more hits.

While your thoughts are noble, he may just want to get rid of it. I have also sold books at a buy it now loss just because I was sick of looking at it.

@flanders I think it's a nice gesture but canceling the sale would be a part of the new sellers history so that might be worse for him the the extra $15 or so that he might have been expecting. How much are you paying for shipping? You're right that he's not even covering the slab cost, but I assume that slab is also costing you extra money is shipping.
Also the slabbing is a sunk cost...it's in the past, either for the seller or for someone else.

@EbayMafia On second thought, I wouldn't even worry about it. A 9.4 on that book means that someone made a mistake in having it slabbed. That happens all the time when you are fishing for 9.6 and 9.8 with moderns, you sometimes end up with books that weren't worth the cost of slabbing. In that situation you just get back as much of your bait as you can and fish again.

$9 shipping. Maybe in a couple years it'll be worth $30 and I can make my money back

lol, well, whatever the case, you've kept your risk level to a minimum. I think the real investment potential in this book is still the new Dr. Light (Asian, female, if it turns out that she's gay also it will be a trifecta of intersectionality that they can't resist putting in movies eventually). If you really want to speculate, go to MCS and buy a few of their "VF" copies for $10-$12 bucks each. Those books are uncirculated and have a chance of pulling 9.8's. I've bought about 15 of them over the last year but they keep putting more stock on the website.

I too would have to say if there is any potential spec to Crisis on Infinite Earths 4, it has to be the new Dr Light. The discussion is way to deep in the weeds about if this book came out before or after Swamp Thing 37

Let's be serious here. DC clearly intended for their cover date June 1985 comics to be for sale BEFORE their July 1985 cover dated comic books. Collectors are never buying the idea that this is a cameo that came out before ST 37. The cover date says it came out one month later.

I did learn something today. I've heard it said that ST 25 was the first cameo of Constantine. Never looked at the comic closely. That is a weak, weak cameo. I'm not sold on that being Constantine. Looks like Rod Stewart to me So little wonder neither CGC nor CBCS labels the book as such.

@flanders
Keep it simple and pay for the book.

@IronMan Since Constantine didn't appear until 12 months after the "cameo", I have to believe that there was no intention at the time for that unnamed background extra to be Constantine. I doubt Constantine was even a consideration at the time SW25 came out.

You probably have a few SW25’s. Spread the love, I need one. I also found another book, Sandman 3 has a Constantine appearance.

As far as the “cameo” in 25 the webs agreeably states this. The crew wanted to draw Sting, and they did. It turned out it was enough fun for them they wanted to make him a character. Was 25 a premeditated Constantine? It doesn’t appear to be. It was however a building block for the character. I guess it depends on how much you personally are sippin the kool-aid. Me, I’m breaking thru walls and yelling “OH YEAH”!

https://comicbook.com/dc/news/the-secret-origin-of-john-constantines-first-appearance/

From the article:

Commenters offered a number of possible alternate "first appearances" for the character, including an issue of Crisis on Infinite Earths. Bissette was having none of it.

"Alan hadn't even concieved of Constantine before we drew Sting in that background panel of Saga of the Swamp Thing #25," Bissette wrote. "We alerted Alan at the time, via snail-mail exchanges of letters, 'You better do something with him, because we're not going to stop drawing him.' Nobody at DC knew anything about it at the time — not even Karen Berger, our editor."

A year later, Constantine would appear for his first named, speaking role, and a star wars born.

So a building block. They wanted to do one character, twelve months later it it might have served as an inspiration to do a different - but ultimately fan popular character.

The hobby already has a name for that. It's called a prototype. NOT a cameo first appearance.

They may have wanted to draw Sting, but I still think it looks like Rod Stewart

A much better hidden second appearance to spend time chasing might be from my favorite, Zatanna. Everyone is certain Atom 19 is her second appearance, and the big two denote it as such, despite the fact it is not. Might be worth grabbing a few copies of her true 2nd appearance.
