Constantine Fans...did you know this?16387

Masculinity takes a holiday. EbayMafia private msg quote post Address this user
Everyone knows that the first appearance of Constantine is Swamp Thing 37 now selling for about $500 in 9.4. Many people know that the first cameo of Constantine, selling for above $100 in 9.4. I just found out last week that there is a second cameo appearance that pre-dates ST 37 and it's in Crisis on Infinite Earths 4. I had been buying copies of this book previously because it's the first appearance of the female Dr. Light and sells for about $10. I don't think it's been widely recognized as a pre-first cameo of Constantine. But if you want a low-cost spec book, this fits that description:

The cover date on ST37 is June 1985. The cover date on Crisis 4 is July 1985... one month later.

@DWeeB1967 That is true, but those dates are arbitrary. I'm still pretty certain that Crisis 4 predates Swamp Thing 37. Trying to confirm it now.

@DWeeB1967 @Zombie_Head My Constantine expert @heinzdad had told me that crisis predates ST37 by a few weeks. My online research so far shows Crisis 4 published in April and Swamp Thing 37 published in May.
Now I feel like the dude on the Simpsons who owns the comic book store.

The Library of Congress shows the publication date for ST37 as 1985-02-26 and the publication date for Crisis 4 as 1985-03-12... two weeks later than ST37.

I didn’t sight the Library of Commerce but I did buy a few copies. Interwebs searches say it predates by 2 weeks. And if the internet says it’s true......

In continuity Crisis 4 should chronologically take place between ST 40 & 44. I think publication dates are irrelevant in this case. If ASM 362 was published a month prior to ASM 361 it wouldnt change the actual first appearance. I don’t think the market will buy it.

Crisis 4 is the first (only?) appearance of Earth 6 so there’s that.

My 2 cents.

One thing we can all agree on is that it is an early appearance of Constantine and that's a good thing.

@HulkSmash It's also the first appearance of the new female Dr. Light. I think it has another minor first appearance as well as the death of The Monitor (which I assume is something like a Watcher?)

@HulkSmash If I'm reading you right, I'm gonna have to disagree with you there. If 362 were published a month before 361, then 362 would be the first appearance of Carnage.

In-continuity chronology only matters so much. No one says the first appearance of Wolverine was in Origins.

Library of Congress keeps track of officially reported publication dates, NOT the date the item was initially available as a product for sale. So to add another layer to this, official publication date as reported by the publisher vs. ship/availability date are always different.

I was not under the impression that first appearances were based on the Library of Congress, official publication date, but rather the date the comic was available for purchase.

I also wanted some clarification on

I assume you're talking about DC Sampler 3? I've seen talk of ST #25, but that seems entirely fabricated because the artists had an infatuation with Sting. Seems very clear that was not drawn to be Constantine, or meant to be Constantine, but rather "fans spotted him in an earlier issue"... What they spotted was a early attempt at drawing a Sting like face on a random background character appearing in one frame.
DC Sampler #3 is selling for FMV in a 9.6 of under $100, with the last two listed sales I can find at $47.00(june this year) and $50 (august this year). and the last 9.8 selling for $145 in Dec 2020 (before the rocketing Spring prices) So I'm just trying to make sure I know what book your describing.

But then that raises the "are previews a first appearance" debate.

so if an office clerk pushes through walking dead 2 before walking dead 1 now walking dead 1 is no longer Ricks 1st appearance?. The peel of a banana does not grow before the fruit inside nor does the banana grow a skin after the fruit. It happens at the same time.

I second that. An early appearance I was completely unaware of.

For anyone so inclined, I'd highly recommend reading "Crisis on Infinite Earths." It continues to be influential on the DC universe today. It's a good read and the George Perez artwork is great.

Numerous key events (character deaths and first appearances).

If you're REALLY adventurous, read all the crossovers, too. 🙂

Good resource, @HexView. I didn't even think to look on Mike's. Even his site shows ST37 going on sale before Crisis 4.

It's easy with the right bookmarks 😆 Mike's site and The GCD are all you need. It appears The GCD uses The LOC's on-sale dates too.

I bought this book quite a while ago, thinking it wouldn't be a bad idea to have Constantine's 2nd app. I think I'm happy either way.

Crisis is where I discovered the Psycho Pirate and thought he was kind of an under-appreciated character (with a cool name). So I started seeking out Silver Age first appearance which is cheap and easy to find. Eventually I got the Golden Age First appearance and then the only other Golden Age Appearance:

I'm going to have to do something to acquire a Swampy #25. It's my last Con Job key.

Gotcha, @Bronte. I must been so blinded by the green of that cover that I didn't notice the missing image.

You guys way lost the race to buy the Crisis #4, 9.6 last night for 50 bucks.

You know what the worst part about that book with me is??? I had a friggin pile of them in the lab that I just neglected and time ran short. They were a stack of MCS 7.0- .5 that were 9.0 plus with attention.

I'm going to post an image that isn't mine.
