You make sense to me! Yeah, as I understand it, in the 80's was when the ratio of newsstand-to-direct was closer to 50/50, with a few things tipping the scales in favour of newsstand rarity, like the way they were displayed and handled, and also that any unsold copies were destroyed when the vendors sent them back or tore off the covers so they could get refunded. Direct vendors couldn't get refunds, so unsold copies wound up in cheapie boxes.

I had never paid mutch attention before, but in going through my collection over the last couple of years and specifically noting if it's a newsstand, I've realized I actually have quite a few and no idea when or where I acquired them.

The first implementation of a Direct Edition designation is the “strike through” barcode. This was used to identify true Newsstand copies that were being returned for credit where as Specialty shops got special pricing in lieu of returns for credit. This “eliminated” fraud of sellers buying each other’s unsold copies at a discount and returning for credit at a profit.

Edit: at the same time one should have seen the barcode on newsstands vs all copies only having a cover price.

You know what - I agree with prior posts on CPV. I like it and will be willing to pay a premium for sure.

I'm sensing that this post is coming from a biased source 🤔

Just looked at one of my Crisis on Infinite Earths books - CPV!!
on my 2x signed - should send in for VSP - need to find my other copies have 1 set signed, 1 set un signed and a few doubled on top of that - willing to bet there are a few more CPV in there.

See...say 10 yrs ago?? I never paid attention to CPV, News or Direct - just bought from the bins...or as a kid..off the shelf...but being in Canada I'm willing to bet more than a few are CPV - and I treat my books nicely (at least post 1984-86) before then I read the heck out of them, put hockey cards in my spokes etc!!!

@KatKomics

Your mention of cards in the bike spokes reminds me that many Canadian O Pee Chee hockey cards are worth well more than their American Topps counterparts.

I guess some would say that is overhype too 😂

Neither, and paying a premium for either is ricoculous.

@KatKomics I have a good feeling most of your books are CPV🤣

I don’t care if newsstand or direct (with the exception of direct only for Spawn). I will jump on a 90s+ newsstand if it looks good. My most recents are a Morbius 1 and a Spirits of Vengeance that look at least 9.4. Those are in the process of being hyped; the best part is finding them at Half Price Books and having an extra copy 😉

was never a card guy...bought the packs for the stickers to fill out the albums - parents throw those away - repeat next year!!

cards - man..ended up with a bunch but as a kid I did not treat them well...spokes -throw cards at the wall..the one who is closet keeps all the cards - cards end up dented, folded and then gambled away!!! being a kid vs collector was great!!!

That’s comic collecting for ya.

Same could be said about paying thousands of dollars for just about any back issues of these mass produced paper booklets.

Fuuuuuu....I need to go through my books/organize my books!

Just found Star Wars Return of the Jedi 1-4 news stand still in the polybag and 1-4 CPV - can't remember if I already knew I had these! - I know somewhere I have another issue #2? signed by Mark Hamill (Heritage auction win)

Chuck of course has them at insane prices - makes me feel good even if they are totally insane!!

Slightly off topic. Anybody have input on Whitman variants? I was looking at a nook and read they are rarer than hen's teeth....

Initial first print direct editions were diamond price box with regular barcodes, not strikethrough bar codes. Stores were returning the initial direct editions since they had a regular barcode which is why the strikethrough was added later. Here's an article on them and their progression.

@Bronte
Some of them are extremely rare first prints. Some aren't first prints so it varies by comic. Read the article above if you want more info on them.

@Bronte I wish I knew more about Whitman variants. They preceded the split to direct/newsstand, and they're another thing that usually got pretty battered. I guess they came in multi-packs and were often found in toy shops where the little kids didn't always treat 'em right. I'd be curious to find out more about them, too. I do have a few.

Here's an example of the first print direct edition with Star Wars #2. They are extremely rare. This image shows all the different US 1977 editions of this comic.

I made that picture a couple years ago before I knew the UK was a 1st print which is why there's a "?" lol. I should probably update that.

Here's some of the harder to find graded ones I have. I have a lot more raws.
There's quite a few on that BIP page I linked above that I've never seen and I'm pretty certain that some listed that don't have photos don't exist. I've been looking for a couple years now for a few of them and have never seen them.
If you start at the beginning and work your way forward through the original Star Wars series, you'll see when high grade direct editions take over in prominence vs. newsstands. There are some weird ones like Star Wars #11 that have both a direct edition diamond box blank UPC and regular barcode UPC. #11 and before that are really hard to find in ultra high grade.

A great list with a lot of them but definitely not all, is at MyComicShop. If you just do a search for Whitman, quite a few show up. This should be a link to those results:

@JustinMabooty Those are very cool!! I have only one of my Whitmans graded, and I'm pretty pleased with it. It would be nice to have some of those Star Wars, though.
