PSA: What Not to Write on a USPS Priority Package.16372

Never write the word "fragile" on the outside of a USPS package. They take it as a personal challenge.*

Fragile! It must be from Italy!

id write "This package contains a Thermal Detonator....want to risk it?" though that would cause more problems then a damaged package

Funny, I always think those exact words..."will they take this as a personal challenge?" But that's not why I write Fragile on the box. The picture you posted is the reason. If I ever have to pursue a claim, I want that picture. A beat up box with "Fragile" clearly stated in bold letters makes a much more compelling image than just a beat up box. It's a chess match with the USPS.

I have sent a package labelled "bio-hazard". But it actually was a bio-hazard so that probably doesn't count.

That's good because I shipped you some books today and that's exactly what I wrote on the package.

@Byrdibyrd I'm really glad, since it was my box. I don't know if I've stumbled onto something but I've been doing 3 diverse levels of protection, and it has worked so far. First is cardboard on each side of the slab, then bubble wrap, and then peanuts to fill all four sides. Of course small bubble wrap on the bottom and top of the box, double folded into 3 layers. But looking at that box, I'm not sure how the case survived the crunch.

I think the cardboard and peanuts saved it.

This was the book in the box:

Writing "fragile" on anything mailed through the USPS means nothing. To actually be handled as a fragile package, you need to pay extra (I think it's around $11-$12) to get the yellow fragile sticker affixed. Your package will be handled much much differently - it will be kept separate from all other packages and will not be thrown. Ask for label 875. Otherwise, just pay extra for the appropriate insurance and pack the items as though they were going to be chucked off a bridge.

@harlyjo you can order fragile or handle with care stickers from the USPS.

Perhaps the stickers are meant to provide extra physical protection rather than actually be read. Or maybe they’re self-descriptive.

I feel like recent posts on here about deliveries have jinxed me.

Fedex threw a package breaking a pizza oven stone (key part of the gift - a pizza oven). They also delivered to the wrong entrance and the crashing sound caused my wife to look at the box. Despite indicating “gift” the box was the mfr box and said “pizza” on the side, tipping off my wife a few weeks early on the gift.

UPS delivered a speaker today (a medium size PA system in fact). The box was almost torn in two. In this case the speaker survived.

Funny enough, USPS has done the best job lately. I fear if I leave my mail person a Christmas gift that one of those Fedex degenerates will manage to “accidentally” take it instead… would be par for the course.

And yes, my house is almost a receiving center for online purchases…

@harlyjo Best way to get your parcel designated as "fragile" is to take it to the P.O yourself, pay the clerk for the postage, and as soon as they go into their spiel asking if the parcel is fragile or contains liquids, perishables, etc., you say "YES!" This will then be entered into the system and the parcel will officially be "fragile." You don't have to pay extra for this at all, but you do need to notify them via official channels. It's true that if you just mark it fragile and leave it at that, they won't treat it any differently.

FRAGILE means "KICK ME" in post office language.

I got those yellow USPS Fragile Special Handling labels, not realizing you had to pay $11+ each to use them. I put them on a few dozen packages, became standard procedure (for a few days). Then a buyer notified me that they had postage due for the special handling. They wanted to know if I was going to reimburse them if they accepted the package. I told them to accept it and I covered the postage due. Then I had to sweat out the possible $300 in potential fees that could occur for the packages already sent, and of course I stopped using the labels, threw them into the trash so they wouldn't get used by accident. That was the only one that got caught, thankfully. Crisis averted.

I was at the Post Office today. As a lady was paying she said "I need it to get there as quickly as possible". The worker says "Now you're going to tell me this? You need to repackage it and purchase different postage". The lady says something like "no I just want you to try to get it there quickly". The guy scowled and gave that package a hard shove down the slide to to back.
