Rubber name stamp on cover. How do we grade?1637

Collector VillageIdiot private msg quote post Address this user
Its amazing for me that in my 35 years of collecting, I've never had to explore this query. I just bought a high grade collection of about 60 books from a friends neighbor. Upon taking them home and looking them over under a microscope (of course not truly) He apparently rubber stamped his name on some of these books over the years

Mind you all, these are not date stamps, nor store stamps, they're a stamp with his name. They are in unobtrusive spots i'd personally write, but they are there and must effect grade, yes? I just never had to determine nor ask how? Please any and all elucidate me...

I have a Two-Fisted Tales #30 in 9.4 with a full name and address stamp on the inside cover. This copy also has a pen scribble in the title, I think as a date mark.

Thank you for that info. However, these stamps are on the front of the covers.

@VillageIdiot Just curious, where you aware of the stamps when you made the purchase? Or was it more of a aurprise afterwards. You have a good point in how it would effect the grade compared to a date stamp. It is probably less desirable than if it were a date stamp. Are they in different locations on the cover or smack dab in the middle? I wish I new too how it effects the grade being I have not encountered this problem personally.

It probably does not matter if inside or outside. Distinguishing between store stampsand owner stamps would make little sense, and I have seen several NM Bethlehem books, so you should not expect big discounts on the grade.

I believe a marking that notes an owner does not affect the grade of the book, only the desireability.

Example being there could be two identical books, both with the same defects and grade, yet one of them has a name on it. Given the choice, I'd take the one without, but the grade should be the same.

At least thats how its been for me until the professional graders came along, I'm not sure how each of them handles it (I've heard cgc ignores it up to a certain grade).

So I guess I really dont have any definitive answer for you 🍸😏.. would be great to hear from CBCS directly on this, its a great question!

Based on my observations, markings on the cover are a bit of a judgement call. No markings of any kind (except witnessed signatures) are allowed in gem mint - per Overstreet (and per CBCS for sigs). They are also rarely seen in 9.8. For GA pedigrees, they reportedly help prove the prior ownership (for example, Crippen 'D' copies), and can get 9.6's and 9.8's. So unless the comics are really high grade, or if the stamp distracts from the art of the cover, it shouldn't be much, if any of a downgrade (IMO).

Guys,
superb, thank you all for chiming in. I'd randomly assess grade of most of these books (all Bronze & Silver) in the VF/NM 9.0 grade. Perhaps 25% may grade NM- 9.2 to 9.4 grade with perhaps some a tad higher. So on average perhaps 65% of the books fall in the 8.0-9.0 grade.

I'd obviously be quite pleased if the grade was not affected much, but I did't technically know. Hopefully with your assistance I now do a bit more

Anyone else have further opinion? please continue to post. The more info the better.

Not sure how it would impact the grade but it would definitely lower the desirability for me.

Yes, I completely understand the personal perspective of the individual collector perhaps not desiring the books, given options. However, i'm specifically asking about the "technical" grading aspects of such a stamp.

The grade will take a hit if a owners' name is stamped on the FC, it is factored into overall eye appeal. To quantify it, consider the size/severity of the stamp to be on par with scribbling/pen marks on the FC.More or less, it is a stain.

Impossible to say without FC/BC scans but for a 9.0 bronze book as you described, expect to take a hit of a full point.

If it were on the inside of the FC, or in a otherwise less than readily apparent place like am interior page in the margins, not effecting story panels....the last page or inside the BC, it would not effect the grade. It would be noted on the label or in the graders' notes.
