MCS...has anyone here ever had a grading disappointment?16281

Far as I can tell I've never had a disappointment yet when slabbing an MCS book. No undisclosed restoration, no undisclosed damage that was noteworthy. Never had a grade come in below there's not sure I've even had one come back the same as the MCS grade. How about you guys, anybody have even one disappointment?

I've had two: a comic graded very fine with substantial pencil erasure and a magazine graded nm with a folded back cover. They were promptly returned.

Only one disappointment. It was raw graded at 2.0 but no disclosure of restoration.

I've only had one in August of this year. This book was graded fair. The centerfold was torn in half with one half missing. It effected the story. I sent MCS an email about it. However, the price on it wasn't worth worrying about, so I told them that I didn't want a refund, I just wanted to let them know. They've always treated me fairly.

MCS 8.5

MCS 8.0

Any problems with grading have been on modern garbage and I tend to chalk it up to distribution damage.

Generally the issue I encounter repeatedly time after time is they sell books graded over the years through their auctions , and when those same books are resubmitted , for resale, they knock the grades down on them often quite heavily. I have somewhat figure out they must replace their grading staff ever so often and sadly the scale is non consistent and it is really a bad thing if you resell through them your raw books. I sent maybe 8 books this last submission of which four came from MCS and were offered back in same grade, only one book came back same grade as purchased, with the others all taking heavy hits and having numerous faults pointed out that were not noticed nor considered when the book was sold. I am beginning to accept that it does not work to try to sell raw books you bought from them back through their service, and at some point they will likely reach a stage where people only offer slabs due to this. I believe they mark the books down heavily to avoid returns, and do so at the sellers expense sadly

No Black Friday sale this year from MCS. They probably feel no need to offer additional discounts. I bought quite a bit from them last year on Black Friday.

Once at a date auction I was graded a 6.0 before bidding. By next morning the grade was adjusted to 10.0 after pressing.

As I read the title to this thread, I thought to myself can one imagine if the word "MCS" was changed to a different three letters: "CGC"?

What a &%$T Show this thread would have become

I’ve been happy with MCS so far. I don’t mind that they grade so harshly. I have not slabbed any yet, but what I’ve purchased has been at least visually superior to the given grade.

Recently bought What If #31 "What if Wolverine had killed the Hulk". MCS had it at VG/FN 5.0. Sent it in to be graded and it came back a 9.0. Here is the before. I'll update when I get the slab back. Paid $14.00 for it.

I haven't submitted too many, but I haven't been disappointed yet.

Spawn #175 MCS 9.2, ended up a 9.6 after a press:

Wolverine #4 CPV MCS 8.0, 9.6 after press. Paid $30 for it:

I also submitted these to CBCS recently, no pressing on any of them:

I believe 5 of 6 hit the 9.8 grade screen . The other's are in great condition, not sure if there's 9.8 potential, but the based on the fmv it wasn't worth submitting at the time:

Only almost EVERY time I buy a graded book.

Ive noticed that people seem to dump their clearly-not-the-assigned-graded-book up on MCS because no one would ever buy this book at that grade in person...

That's a fair point. I notice a lot of miswraps with MCS slabbed consignment books. Also books that don't show well for the grade given.

I have a shocking number of books that when they arrived, I couldn't believe the grade they received.

I really wish they gave some sort of note or something. If they can mention a scuffed case - which I often cant even seem to find - they can surely mention numerous color breaking spine tics on a 9.6-9.8 book.

I personally think it's a mistake for sellers to add subjective comments to slabbed books. It would be a slippery slope, from a business perspective nothing good would come from MCS spending that time and starting that precedent.

I agree completely. My pissedoffness just comes from the fact that they shouldn't even need to make those kinds of comments.

I had no way of knowing that 9.8 graded copies signed by Adam Hughes weren't what you were looking for. drchaos private msg quote post Address this user
A couple year ago I bought a raw Turok # 2.

MCS missed damage to the interior of the book so I overpaid a bit.

Haven't slabbed the book yet so I could luck out but I doubt it.

They have an unbelievable volume of books going through there so mistakes are inevitable, but I buy from them on a massive level and my experience has been more mistakes above their grade than below. Inserts are their worst issue. Stating a book has a Mark Jeweler insert and it not being there when I receive it. Tattooz as well. Mislassification is their biggest fault, not grading, IMO.

There is a gamble but I'd say for the most part, buyers there are playing with house money.

Just a little more info about how MCS does business. The last few days I had an issue where an order was stuck on processing for a week(that never happens). I messaged them and within a day they had shipped it and refunded me my delivery fee without me asking for it.

MCS has been a mixed bag for me and I learned alot over the years from dealing with them. Selling to them or through them with raw books, expect anything you submit to get knocked down at least 1-2 grades. From my experience, raw books are really given the hard side of the deal to avoid returns. I wont ever sell raw books again through them for any reason. This has been especially observable in books I won from them through auction, with the original grading sticker still in the bag, when submitted for resale coming back much lower grade with many flaws not noted when the book was sold to me.

Conversely it is a buyers market, with many books that I have gotten with a stated grade, being much higher grade when graded by CGC or CBCS themselves rather than MCS.
I think their customer service, and system for selling etc are all far and beyond the best out there. The people, especialy Este are amazing.
I do feel they do the entire hobby a diservice using such forced grading. It suggests a much harsher system than most in the hobby folow, and exists only to avoid returns for the ultra tight convervative grading some do. There should be a more middle ground that does less harm to seller grades and gives buyers a truer picture of the book they will get

Just my opinion after buying and sell, trading with them for about ten years give or take.

I think buying raw books through MCS is great. I have never been disappointed, but I can imagine that selling raw books through them would be pretty frustrating.

Customer Service is top shelf, phenomenal people over there.
