Eternals Movie, Thoughts16252

Johnny, where are your buccaneers?

Saw the eternals movie yesterday.. grand kids liked it.. I thought it was good.. I'm in south Florida so were pretty opened up.. Not sure if people still aren't frequently visiting the movies or interest in the eternals is down.. I think its more that people just aren't going to the movies yet.. There was hardly anybody in the 10 theater site.. parking lot was empty.. which is surprising because snowbird season is here..
back to the movie: from 1-10 I give it a 7.. you had to know a little about mythology to recognize the characters or have read the comic books.. The grandkids had gone over some of it in school, in fact they were studying about Mesopotamia & Babylon so they weren't lost.. Evidently they had also talked about mythology some because they new the names of the eternals and what they could do.. so that saved me a lot of explaining.. They included a few tie ins to the MCU and the avengers so the on going saga continues..
There's 2 Trailer Teasers in the credits.. The first one added a couple more eternals(gods).. I had to go to you tube for the explanation of the last one.. I just never read the comics with that character so I was stumped..

@Gotlift I have family in Sarasota out on Siesta Key. They say that the snowbird season is one of the slowest they have experienced in decades. They like it as traffic has been more manageable.

Did care for it but I know it is building towards something. Disney did a piss poor job with their trailers. There was no major build up. Celestials were the best part.

I haven't seen the movie but I imagine that following up the original MCU is a two-edged sword of high expectations. Imagine that instead of Iron Man it was this movie that was the first installment of the MCU. There would probably be less people going to see it, but those who did see it would probably be pretty impressed by it. But since it's like the 22nd film in the MCU, it probably disappoints more people than it otherwise would have.

I've seen a few movies in the theater this year, starting back with Black Widow. Not one of them has had that many people watching. I just don't think the crowds are back.

Crowds are definitely not back and I'm not convinced they'll get back to pre-covid levels ever.

Superman, Batman, Spider-Man...those are household names. And they fill the theater seats accordingly.

The Eternals?... who?

While I do agree with you...Marvel Studios itself has become a household name.

I think the two of those are combining for the low turnouts. For many of us our habits have changed. Going to a theatre sounds too much like for me. Since 2020 my home has become more and more the place where entertainment and meals happen. But if something like an X-men movie came out, it would be interesting to see how that would affect theatre turnout.

I spent some time last year upgrading my home theater setup myself. Now that I’m at 11 channels of neighborhood shaking sound and sitting inches from an 80 inch TV, with a mini fridge, deep freezer and “combiwave” air fryer, microwave, grilling thingamajig all within a few steps…

Hmmm, I was going to say I don’t feel like we are missing any of the theater experience except the sticky floors.

Instead I am wondering if I am going to get my own x-gene…

So is Johnson & Johnson, but not everybody is running out to buy K-Y Jelly.

I can't say that everyone is but certainly the projection is increasing in numbers. 😀

I think Guardians of the Galaxy proved a successful film doesn't need to be a household name.

Perhaps, but Guardians of the Galaxy was an entertaining and engaging film. Big difference.

The quality of these films is opinion...GOTG or Eternals being household names is not. The box office success of these films is not based on being household names. Its impossible to predict what Eternals may have done in a pre-covid market but I'd bet far better than it's doing now.

I was just comparing the original trailers for both GOTG and Eternals. They would have different appeals to different people. But if you asked 100 people to choose one to see for the first time, I would expect over 75% would choose GOTG:

If you're saying 75% of people who haven't seen either film but you're polling these people in a time after the release of atleast the 1st GOTG film, then I'd agree.

If we went back in time before the release (and hype) of the first GOTG film and showed the trailers of these 2 films, that 75% number would be hugely different...could easily be 50/50 or even favour Eternals.

I thought the film was great, we are mining comics and characters that were not all that successful when the comics were released. But the "kind" of film this was a curveball for MCU fans. I can understand that this might not be a "great" film for superhero fans, but it will be one of those films that will have legs.

You could be right @GAC. I admit it's purely speculation on my part. I just compared the two trailers because, as we are discussing, both were pretty much unknown quantities at the time the trailers came out. In my opinion the GOTG trailer looks much more relatable and does a better job of introducing itself to a new audience. If a teenager were taking a date to one of those movies this weekend, it strikes me as the "safe" choice.

GOTG is certainly the more "fun" film and definitely the better date movie and because it's more fun probably more relatable, I'll give you that.

I prefer the heavier stuff, so I probably would have been in the 25% that chose Eternal, lol. But it's been a while since I've needed to navigate a successful date.
