First post: Advice on framing please.16149

Collector Sunvox private msg quote post Address this user
Hi all. First post here. Relative newbie as I collected a few comics when I was a young boy,but just recently pulled my box of comics out of storage with the intent of perhaps selling some since the market for comics has become so busy, but funny thing happened along the way. I discovered I still enjoy comics, and actually wanted to add to my collection instead of selling. Go figure

Anyways I decided to create a display wall in my Man Cave and bought 2 items to combine with one from my collection. I’ve searched online, but I haven’t found exactly what I need as it’s somewhat custom in nature. I have a Captain America 100 and 109 that I want to put on either side of a Jack Kirby signed CA lithograph.

Questions:

Is there a custom comic framing place you can recommend?

Are there concerns regarding framing and preservation?

I use a local shop. Not sure if there are any regional or national framers.

I've had a few custom frame jobs done by Hobby Lobby for some vintage posters. The posters were not regular sizes so they needed to be custom. I've never framed a comic but HL may have ideas for it if you try them or another shop that has a similar framing department.

hobby lobby would be a good option; they have a few UV blocking glass options. Whoever you choose I’d ask what kind of documents they have handled other than pictures or if they have handled comics.

Whatever you do get UV filtering glass, and acid free rags in the matting. If it were mine before I spent all that money I would have the Kirby autograph authenticated...not sure what year it was released but it does resemble roz's signature

@Sunvox
First off, welcome to the forum! Great to have another enthusiast join in on the discussions. Cheers! 😎🍺

I’d found a few places online that might be able to help out with your custom ideas.
https://www.levelframes.com/comic-book-frames
https://www.perfectcases.com/comicbookframes
https://thecollectorsresource.com/

With all of the options available hopefully you can find the right fit for your books. I’ve also used HL for a few books and they were very helpful. Again, welcome to the forum & good luck!

I have gotten the quad cases from perfect cases for graded comics and they are awesome. Service is pretty quick as well, only a few weeks from order to delivery:
https://www.perfectcases.com/quad-4-graded-comic-book-frame/

They also have non-graded frames for various numbers. No matter where you go though, as was said above, just be sure to get the UV protection glass. 99% UV filtered and all of that. Will protect your comics.

I had mine done through Michael's. If you download their app and check periodically they have a nice sale every few months. I think I saved over 60% on mine. I had it done with the museum quality settings to off set deterioration from sun and such.

Here are some examples.

I had this signed and numbered Berni Wrightson Conan print done at Joann Fabrics. Like @Bronte and Michael's they have some pretty good coupons. It is too expensive without the coupons. This also has acid free matting and UV glass. This print greets you as you head into the basement which is now my man cave.

Thanks everyone. All super ideas. I found the PerfectFrames site, but the rest were all new. I really like the professionalism of the Micheal's site. At first I thought you guys were talking about the art supply store. Hah! Anyways, thanks. I'm certain one of those will fit the bill perfectly.

There was a comment about the signature, and I agree. I hope it's authentic! Here's the add I bought:

The first time I read this a couple hours ago I thought you said that you can walk to them. I was thinking especially if you live near a Michael's. Now it makes more sense. Lol.

Having been signed in 1990 and Kirby passed in 94 thats pretty close to when he was letting Roz do all the signature stuff for him. I definitely would have it verified before I went further

Well, I already bought it so there's no verifying prior. The only thing I can say is that the Brooklyn Comic shop has been around for decades and sells a ton of signature stuff. If they sold something that was fake, I would be honestly shocked.

Could it happen? Without a doubt. Do I think it likely? No. BUT, I will try and have it 3rd party verified for my own peace of mind.

I guess to get into this discussion somewhat requires a background in Kirby history. It is fairly well established that Kirby often used ghost signers, rumored as many as four. It is also pretty well understood that when kirby went to cons, Ros would let people drop their books off to be signed, and at a discreet moment she would slip away to a hotel room and sit and sign them all for him. It has become common knowledge in the industry that most anything Kirby supposedly signed his last few years, were done by her. In fact, by example, his signature run of x men books for Dynamic forces.....each and everyone fails authentication as they were signed by her.

As far as the shop selling it, they would have no reason to question its validity and probably felt they were handling genuine article. It isnt so much a matter of selling something fake as being educated to how and what kirby did his last several years. Most simply take it at face value and never look deeper. You have to know the history and it helps sitting here in the forum watching for years as member after member submits their Kirby signed something and it does not pass cause........

I myself have at least two signatures that I bought thinking were Kirby or at least willing to test the waters and neither can be authenticated by BAS as Kirby...they are both Roz signatures as I have come to learn.

My best Kirby signature and one that was accepted by BAS as likely to pass full authentication. Now compare it to these samples from books done in the nineties, The last viking heroes.

BAS stated the red and the blue ink signatures were unlikely to pass full authentication.Given that most of his signing work in the nineties was in fact handled by Ros, before you dump alot of money and consideration into the print, I would spend the ten dollars, and ask BAS to give a quick look . Fairly cheap, and you can get a better feel for what you have.
This last example was sold at one of the larger auction houses about a year ago and was stated as not actually Kirby but an example of Ros proxy signing for him....

I didnt mention this to spoil your excitement or anything but it pays to know what you have for sure. I hope it does pass for you and wish you quite well at it. I am also quite aware of the track record for kirby signatures and the history involved so....

No spoiling at all. I genuinely appreciate the information.

I did start looking at Kirby art, and I see on one website that Kirby signed art is uber expensive. I'm drooling over this one below, but I'm afraid it's outside of my price range. Anyways, thank you again for the informative post. I will have my lithograph checked, but I won't hold my breath.

I wrote quite a bit more above, but really messed things up by trying to edit the quote down to size. Silly me. Anyways, I'll try to remember what I wrote and post again . . .

Basically, I spent several hours searching online for anything signed by Kirby, and I jumped on the first item I found without giving it enough careful investigation. Fortunately a $500 mistake is not something I'm overly concerned with. I will certainly send the lithograph off for verification, but won't hold my breath in expectation of a positive outcome. Based on the site I show above I guess I'll need to reconsider my goal of getting a signed Captain America anything

Thanks again for the history and information. Greatly appreciated!!

Your print may be submitte via email to BAS for 10 dollars for a quick glance and they can give you an idea if it would pass verification or no....its an informal first opinion if they think it would pass full verification.

It is also quite possibly legit...alot depends on how and when the signing was done. Either way i wish you all the luck in the world with it and hope for the best.

I am not sure you made a mistake yet or not, I simply suggest extreme caution until you can get a second opinion and input is all. A good signed kirby print often surfaces on ebay for a 2-4 hundred dollars, that were signed in the 70s. They are similar looking prints with cap and bucky. I have located one in the past for another member here on the forum. They were generally all signed in the earlier years when Kirby was at his best convention and signing wise

Well Bad News/Good News. Bad news I finally got the lithograph, and the COA says nothing about the signature being authentic so looks like I got conned on that one - ouch -, but great news I went back looking for a signature on the NostalgicInvestments.com and found a print from one of my favorite historical/movie events that is signed by Kirby, AND I learned that Kirby was the screenwriter of the infamous Argo movie used by the CIA as part of the undercover plan to free the hostages that were stuck in the Canadian Ambassadors house in Iran in 1979 AND, it was only $135! Seems like a screaming deal to me! I'm happy to have found that print regardless as it's definitely of real interest to me especially now that I know Kirby was involved in the Argo story.

The print was signed, so not an original signature, but a printed signature. Then apparently it also has an original signature from Jack's partner below. Regardless I find it a truly entertaining piece of memorabilia given the history.
