So as some of you have seen in other threads, I recently just got a Four Color II #12 (Bambi) from Ebay. While doing my processing on the book, I saw it only had one staple. Now it has been awhile since I have had a book from the War years, but I do seem to remember them only having the single staple due to metal rationing. Did Timely and DC also only use one staple during those years, or was it only the lessor publishers? |

I've never seen (or known of) a Timely or DC book with a single staple published during that era. If so, it was probably manufacturing error.

I have seen several Fawcett books, like Captain Marvel, from around 1944 that have one center staple. I can’t think of any Marvel or DC’s like that, but I am not a staple expert by any stretch.

Yes, War books commonly had one staple due to rationing. If you think "what good would using only one staple on a comic book to save metal?" realize that comic print runs in those days regularly reached close to a million copies of each book (according to Wikipedia Captain Marvel - who most of you may know as Shazam - reached 1.4 million copies per issue!), so eliminating one staple for tens of millions of comic books each month was actually a pretty big deal. |
