CLZ ends deal with Go Collect16052

Maybe they just like me better. Nah, that's not it. BPaxson002 private msg quote post Address this user
Below is the email sent from CLZ announcing the end of their deal with go collect. How many of you use CLZ and what do you plan on doing now the connection has been severed?

I think I will be keeping it to see who they hook up with, if they can.

This is CLZ Alwin and I am afraid I have some bad news for you today:

Our agreement with GoCollect has ended, so in today's updates all GoCollect-related features have been removed:

CLZ Comics 6.9 for iOS and Android (now live)
Comic Connect (changes now live)
Comic Collector 21.7 (coming up later this week)
Which means no more automatic comic values when you add comics and no more daily updates for values.

We fully understand this is a shock and a disappointment for you all. Trust me, we are very disappointed too, maybe even more so than you are.
In any case, we sincerely apologize for this sudden loss of functionality. Please read on below for possible ways to get compensated or refunded.

But first, let me give you some more background on what happened:

Our agreement with GoCollect, and how it ended
In May 2019 we first got in contact with GoCollect (GC). At the time, they did not have an API for 3rd party access at all. So they quickly whipped up a temporary API for us and we came to the agreement that CLZ could use that API for free for 1 year, or at least until they had set up their real paid API and 3rd party data licensing agreement.

However, that new API and agreement did not materialize, not in 1 year, not in 2 years. Then in May 2021 GC promised us our new API and agreement would arrive early July 2021, after their new website was launched.
Sadly, nothing happened in July... or in August. No new GoCollect website, no new API, no new paid data agreement.

Then suddenly, starting Sept 23, the number of daily value updates dropped from a few hundred to just a handful. And obviously, we started to get lots of complaints from you all about not receiving value updates anymore.

We of course contacted GoCollect. They were not aware of any problems, but told us the lack of updates was "probably caused by their migration to the new website" and that they would look into it.
Then on Oct 5 GC told us to "let our users know that there may be service interruptions over the next several weeks as they migrated to their new platform."
On Oct 13 their statement changed to: "The time investment in making the old API work is going to mean a longer lag than us focusing on getting the new site launched and the new API established. The estimated timeline for our new API is approx 2-4 weeks and I look forward to discussing that partnership opportunity with CLZ next week."

Finally on Oct 15, GoCollect dropped their bomb with us:
They had changed their mind and there was NOT going to be a new paid API for 3rd parties. They told us sorry, but we were welcome to use their upcoming free API when it becomes available... but without any ETA and without any details about what data the free API would contain.

So... we had to make a tough decision...
... wait for the free API, with no ETA and the likely chance that it would be too limited anyway...
Or bite the bullet and stop working with GoCollect completely.

After serious discussions and deliberations, we decided to go for the latter. We decided to remove all GoCollect functionality from our apps and software, resulting in the updates that were released today.

How to get compensated or refunded
Even though most of what happened was beyond our control, we take full responsibility. So we want to offer a generous compensation to anyone who is disappointed about this loss of functionality.

These are the compensation offers to choose from:

Option 1. get 3 extra months for your current subscription(s)
Option 2. get 3 free months for any of the other comic cataloging tools
(e.g. try Comic Connect for free for 3 months)
Option 3. get 3 free months for any other Collectorz.com cataloging tool
(e.g. for movies, books, music and games)
If you want one the above options, contact us here and let us know your CLZ Account name or email address, and which compensation option you want.

Option 4. stop using our software and get a full refund
Alternatively, if you find that the loss of automatic comic values will make the app or software completely useless to you, contact us here and we will cancel your subscription for you and offer you a full refund of your latest subscription payment.
Of course, if you go for Option 4, that will mean you will have to stop using the app or software and go look for an alternative. However, even after your subscription has been cancelled, you will still have full access to your CLZ Cloud data, so that you can export it.

Q&A: some questions and their answers
Q: Will existing values be removed from my database?
A: No, they will not. All values that were previously downloaded will remain in your database.

Q: What will happen to all the value related fields?
A:All value related fields (like Value, Grade, Grading Company, Slabbed vs Raw, Grader Notes) will stay. They are still an important part of the app.

Q: If I do not download today's updates, will my GoCollect features keep working?
A: No, that won't make a difference, all GoCollect value downloading has also been disabled on our Core server side.

Q: Are you looking for a different 3rd party value provider to replace GoCollect?
A: Yes, we are. No promises and no ETA though. It takes a lot of time to find a partner, set up a collaboration, negotiate an agreement, implement the API, link up their entries with our entries, etc...

Again, we are very sorry to have to bring you this bad news today.
Thanks for your understanding!

This is disappointing. I'm still in the "wait and see" mode. I had sent a msg to gocollect asking if at some point we could import and sync our CLZ collection with the "my list" and/or "my comics". That was 2 days ago with no answer. I guess it's now a moot point.

I use CLZ, but I only just started. Because I don't have much time invested in CLZ yet, I may drop it and go for GPA, which was the other one I was considering.

I don't care this partnership has ended. Knowing the value was a cool feature, but not the reason I got the app to begin with.

I'm looking for another app that provides values but not getting anywhere, also it would be great for the other service to have a tool to import my comics.

Anyone find anything like this yet?

I'm in the same boat. I was checking out https://comics.gpanalysis.com for values but $10.95 a month!? No thanks. There is definitely a void in this area for collectors. If I had the background to do a start-up... I'd be all over it! I really liked the concept and collaboration CLZ had with gocollect. It really pisses me off gocollect screwed it all up.

They did quickly give me a 3 month credit on the CLZ comic app as compensation...I hope they can find a replacement. It was cool knowing the statistics of my slabs values and market changes, but will continue to use it as a catalogue for the collection.

GoCollect really butchered their website...

There really isn't another app that does what CLZ does. GPA does not have an app and the website is a pain in the ass in to use on a phone to use in a phone browser. What really needs to happen is for CLZ to buy up GPA. The IT of CLZ is much better than GPA and could update GPA much better than GPA can.

If I need to sell a big book/books I pay $10 and get a month of GPA. It's a nice guide for setting price. It's not perfect but it works.

I contacted CovrPrice to see if they have a collection import option for csv or XML. I'll post their response if I receive one.

I use Covrprice and I like them a lot. I find them to be pretty easy to navigate and they don't cost a small fortune like GPA (I looked into them and they just charge too much).

By the way, Stash My Comics is free of charge (big plus), but I find their site a little harder to navigate, and their value estimates are not the best. Seriously, just because a G.A. book doesn't have many recent sales that doesn't mean it's only worth the 10-cent cover price.

Also checked out Nostomania, but their lack of cover pics made it too much of a pain for me to figure out what was what.

Does CovrPrice have an app or just the website?

Hmmmmmmm. No.

This is more than simple change management. CLZ is, probably, the widest used comic collecting software. Part of the reason why is its former connection to go collect.

Just proves my theory (which I’m sure many of you share). I don’t believe they have any data scientists or back end developers making any decisions over at GC. It’s all front end / “lipstick on a pig” (and not very good lipstick at that). They were so focused on making the site look new with new UI they completely dropped the ball/ignored their data management side of things. I can go on a much larger rant about how data and display should be separate and if they did focus on creating a quality API it would have paid for itself a million times over.

It’ll be interesting to see when GC gets the memo.

Not the meaning of my post. My post is about change events and conditions in general . People don't like it.

Hmmmmm. Yes.

I doubt GoCollect sent copies of the book to CLZ or vice versa.

Change management is the meaning of your post, whether you mean it or not. The title you semi quoted "Who Moved My Cheese" is a beginner course in, wait for it......, Change Management. Change Management is, as you say change events and how people deal with them. Both good and bad.

CLZ ending the agreement with Go Collect is much much more than change management. It is a solution to a blind side attack on one of their products. CLZ's change management hasn't even begun yet.

So, yeah no.

@BPaxson002

Maybe you should look to the book and the lessons within it and move away from the experience you had in the last company you were in with that management changes occurred and you got a copy of the book from HR?

The book is about change and opening the mind to changes. The book can be summed up as change happens, anticipate it, why anticipate it, etc. Your posts are perfect examples of someone whose cheese got moved and didn't like it.

You would really be pissed if someone changed how they made your grilled cheese and then moved it.

That is sorta Grilled Change Cheese Management

CovrPrice's website is just godawful though. Even if they do accept clz files, it takes 10 clicks to add a new book. With drop down menus even. Plus having the screen half taken up by useless graphics.

Though their data scraping seems good. Found my Four Color II #12 price I just paid on Ebay

The latest from GoCollect...

GOCOLLECT’S PRESIDENT REGARDING CLZ
written by Tiffany Curry October 28, 2021

In light of questions we have received about CLZ’s recent update and in the spirit of transparency, please see below for answers to the FAQs:

Q: Why isn’t GoCollect providing refunds to CLZ users?

A: When we connected with CLZ in 2019, the arrangement was informal with no contract or formal agreement. We have always provided CLZ with free access to our API, with the understanding that we’d get to a formal agreement when GoCollect was ready. The plan to begin charging CLZ has always been in service of our commitment to continue investing in technology and talent makes our application more helpful to its users. Offering free access to CLZ indefinitely would’ve compromised our ability to do that given we also offer list management services for collectors.

In the Spring of 2021, we met with CLZ leadership to discuss a formal agreement and paid partnership based on when our new site and API would be available. CLZ was aligned and was waiting for us to launch in July. However, unexpected delays occurred in our development timeline for things like family emergencies, weddings, birth of children and well deserved vacation time for our team. Delays also came from our relentless desire to build an even better product as we continued down the development path. We incorporated “this-just-in” new ideas and thinking into our dev timeline and communicated the July delay to the masses.

Q: Why were the values not updating for CLZ users starting in September?

A: We officially launched our new site on October 13th, which began with a transition in September. During the transition, something compromised the data feed. So we let CLZ know that the best path forward was for us to focus on our new site and new API because they would offer the stability we both wanted.

Q: Why are CLZ and GoCollect no longer working together?

A: I acknowledged the data feed issues that occurred for CLZ users when we migrated to our new site in direct communication with CLZ as well as on CLZ’s Facebook page (I no longer have access so can’t confirm the date). I also shared our intention to host a meeting with CLZ on October 22nd to roll out the new API. But, we continued to have concerns about working with CLZ due to differences in our professional values. On October 15th, I notified CLZ that GoCollect made the decision to part ways and discontinue discussions about an API solution for them outside of the free option that will be available.

Thank you for reading. We look forward to continuing to focus our efforts on innovation that serves the needs of our users and the collector community.
