I couldn't find a thread on this yet, if i missed it just delete please. WhatNot started showing up in my Instagram feeds over the summer. They let users hold live shows/auctions with all sorts of collectibles, including comics. They require immediate payment on all wins and shipping is figured in as well. The upside to this right now is they don't have a ton of traffic yet and some live shows have low double digit viewers, leading to some great deals on some comics! They also did the exclusive Invincible 1 Kirkham bloody variant that came outa few months ago. I have got some great deals myself already and have also signed up to host my own shows (hotkeycomics, shameless plug, 1st show 11/1 8pm est ![]() I would definitely recommend checking it out, some accounts start all their bids at $1 and theres also plenty of other shows besides comics as well. Overall I see this becoming bigger in 2022 and a lot of people have been looking for an ebay alternative, well here it is! |

@HotKeyComics thank you for sharing! I downloaded the app. I'm having trouble listing though. How do you list an item that doesn't show up in their search? I tried scanning the bar code as well but it appears it's not a comic anyone has listed. I tried researching how but haven't found anything that has the answer. It seems to me you should be able to sell items that no one else is selling....I'm sure I'm just missing something! Any pointers are much appreciated!! Thanks again for sharing about this app!![]() |

@TigerRose1981 - you have to fill out an application and be approved to start listing. Right now, for comics, they don’t do single item listings, that I am aware of. You have to start a live auction.

Most of the time when I click on them to see what's going on, there are between 5 and 30-ish people attending. So of those 5-30, only the ones interested in the book will be bidding. Things very often sell lower than they would elsewhere. As a buyer it's fine, if you are willing to sit around and wait until the seller puts up a book you're interested in. You might get a good deal, but you might be there an hour and a half waiting. And that's only if the seller took the time to list each book he is selling. Many don't even bother so you have no idea what they're selling. My time is worth way more than that. There is no search function so you don't know if you should be wasting your time or not. Personally, I like the idea of listing a book and letting people all over the world search for it and find it, then bid (or buy). I see things go higher and with many more bids on eBay... and the fees are only 2% different. 2% at eBay (love 'em or hate 'em) buys you an audience potentially a million times bigger. A search function so people find your books. And auctions that last up to ten days... not minutes. I just don't see the attraction, myself.. but good luck to you. |

I'd check it out but I just didn't see many details on the website. What are the fees, assurances, etc.?

What are the two percentages for? How are payouts handled? Why would I choose them over selling on, say, eBay? The forum can consider these rhetorical questions, as I don't really want to hear it second-hand. Whatnot should make it easy for me to find. |

Quote:Originally Posted by xkonk Easy answers to them all. Payouts are all through paypal. The 2 percentages are split so you see why they have a 10.9% fee, 8% is theirs and the 2.9% is a pretty standard processing fee that a lot of businesses use. The reason to use them over ebay is they aren't defaulting to siding with the buyer and the risk of selling a higher grade comic and having it swapped out with a lower grade then returned to you so you have to refund it in full while the scammer keeps the item in better shape and you get completely screwed over is eliminated. They handle all claims and all payouts and its never passed to you as long as fraud hasn't occurred. |

Sure they need a detailed FAQ and a better interface and those are in the works, but the seller training they provide answers all these questions you have and you can't sell until you join one of their training sessions so they do give you all these answers firsthand before you can ever sell and they also have a great Q&A part of the training where you can ask anything and get answers from someone knowledgeable in the collectibles world, unlike Ebay. Or just keep trolling i guess...? 🤷♂️ I started the thread to let people know about the site/app, if you have issues with the site/app that's fine but posting like that seems counter productive to the point of the thread. ✌ |

I found the info useful. Doesn’t really look too appealing <yet>. This is coming from someone who loathes ebay. If I see a viable ebay alternative I will jump at it as both buyer and seller. So far this doesn’t look too promising. |

Quote:Originally Posted by Davethebrave I too wish there was something better than eBay. I was checking out Whatnot when it was just sports cards. People were doing more than just auctions. It was entertaining watching them open packs. Seemed fine, but I didn't really know the values of most stuff. Last night a guy had a comic he paid $100 for. He kept hyping it as the auction went on because bids were barely occurring. You could hear the relief each time someone bid. It went for $54 and he was quite bummed, lol. I felt bad for him but I don't know what he was expecting. |

I'm not trolling. I'm expecting the bare minimum of information from the website of a company that wants by business. I guess "why we're better" is beyond the minimum but the cost of business definitely isn't.

Update for anyone interested: I completed my first live sale and WhatNot has already added a few updates since my original post. Updates: ACH payouts now available direct to your bank account. / Cloning/Copying listings from previous auctions added / multiple copies of the same lot option added Live sale recap: So I did 30 lots for my first one, 29 sold. I had a high count of just over 20 viewers at one point and averaged around a dozen. Some comics sold for a little less than I thought they would and some sold for more, it averaged out well. Shipping was seamless, it prints labels for both first class and priority mail depending on overall size of the shipment (it automatically selects the right one), as well as packing lists for each one with both the real name and username from WhatNot so you don't mix anything up. Payment notifications were immediate on my end when each auction ended and I ran into zero issues with any aspect of the auction from WhatNot, payouts were available within 48 hours of delivery confirmation. Would highly recommend, I'll be doing at least a couple a month, ill try for every week. Next one tomorrow (Monday) night at 8pm EST. Tips: Make sure you make a preview video for your sale and make sure your add descriptions to all your lots at least 24 hours prior. In my experience so far, the auctions with actual descriptions for lots have many more viewers and the ones with 100 generic comic listings usually have single digit viewers. |
