CGC Screw Up - ASM 238 (aka Why CBCS is a better grading company)16010

So, I know CGC has been doing this quick turnaround thing lately where they boast about a super fast turnaround time, the more I read about it, the more I feel like they're just grabbing people off the street to do the job. After seeing many posts on QC, I had my own personal experience today...and as a big fan of CBCS, I thought I'd share.

I ship majority of my books to CBCS (I have about 35 in process right now) and I use CGC for personal collection when I need a green label (missing MVS etc...)

I purchased an Amazing Spider-Man 238 Canadian Price Variant without Tattooz advertised as staple damage...
Book had a tear on back cover at top staple where tattooz had been removed...
Book was then discovered to be missing the top staple...

I found a copy of Lakeside Tattooz from a Fantastic Four book...
I cleaned and pressed my ASM 238...
I slid them in right under the cover to where they should normally sit without a staple present...

After some deliberation on staple replacement (restored vs Green Label or CBCS Low grade Blue), I decided to submit to CGC to get a Green Label as the staple was clearly missing and I believe CBCS would rightfully hit me with a pretty low grade for a missing staple.

Well my book came back from CGC in about 4 weeks from the facilitator...
...and this happened.

This book is missing a staple that was originally there (holes in place). It should not be a blue label and as such should be nowhere near a 7.5!

This book is for personal collection, so I won't be ripping anyone off by selling it. However, although this worked in my favor, it is a completely false grade on the condition of the book....this is why I trust CBCS.

Hello,

Your post reminded me of a video I watched recently. Jerno's Comics & Pop Culture.

I think it's just a reality of the speed at which books have to pass through the grading process these days. There will be some errors like this. I don't think it should undermine confidence as a whole in the industry or a specific company. But it does put you in a difficult moral dilemma if you know something about the book that is not included on the grade.

Def should be purple label with married tattooz, missing a staple, if that’s the worst thing COULD still get 7.5.

They wouldn't be able tell about married tattooz with no staple there unless they would risk damaging/indenting cover to see staple holes on tattooz. It's pretty much undetectable as they just slide behind the cover. If I had added the staple it would be flagged restored and a dead giveaway...

I don't see any way this book gets a 7.5 with no staple and a tear on back cover at staple location (plus other minor defects)...from everything I've read missing staple is auto green at CGC.

Is the missing staple in the graders notes?

Green label is ONLY if the book would grade higher if the problem didn’t exist. But also has to be noted by the grader.

Qualified Label (Green)

A Qualified label is used by CGC for collectibles that have a significant defect that needs specific description, or to note an unauthenticated signature (one which was not witnessed by CGC). For example, a comic book with a missing coupon that otherwise grades 6.0 will receive a Qualified grade, avoiding a considerably lower grade. CGC would give this book a Qualified grade of 6.0 and a Label Text notation “COUPON MISSING FROM PAGE 10, DOES NOT AFFECT STORY.” Or, if the book is signed on the cover it may be noted as “NAME WRITTEN ON COVER IN MARKER.”

Restored Label (Purple)

This label is applied to any comic book that has evidence of repair so that it will appear as it did when it was in its original condition. Restoration can come in a variety of degrees, from slight professional restoration (A-1) to extensive amateur restoration (C-5). View the CGC Restoration Grading Scale

No indication at all that the staple was missing...they noted the tear on the back cover where the original staple was pulled out ..

If not for the damage on the back of the book it actually looks pretty good. I thought I read somewhere that they don't downgrade that book for the missing tattoos because of how easy it is to replace it with a tattoo pack from ff252.

I believe that is correct. The packs are identical.

As for missing a missing staple. That is a big miss… not sure if it supports the headline. With the volume of books processed mistakes will of course be made.

Yes, headline is a bit misleading....more personal opinion after experiences.

No Tatooz gets an incomplete green lab...unless you mean the insert is there and Tattooz are missing from insert.

I thought with some books you can opt for a lower grade blue label or higher grade green label.
