| How are the experts able to recognize books with married pages or covers? Is it purely a subjective thing based on page quality and color? Is it likely to get missed or debated more than other restoration? | ||

| I would think staple placement is the #1 indicator. They are not all equal. I have a book with a swapped cover; the donor book staples were slightly off compared to the other. Running the staples through the original holes would have left a nasty over hang or it has 2 sets of staple holes like my book. | ||

| Can often tell by staples that show tampering, or the holes appear to be too large..or the pages dont align well with one another, by margins, trimming, etc. Or the paper quality might be off from one to another...not all books are stapled perfectly in the same postion either. ..... | ||

| That's good information, thanks. Also kind of explains why grading older books should cost significantly more than newer books. I imagine the time required to inspect them in detail for various types of restoration is quite a bit more than the time required for a modern book. | ||

| It's all in the staples and staple holes. If the donor book isn't cut and put together the same way, then holes, wrap, or cover will be off. If trimmed to match, then you've created a second problem (defect). | ||

| My first CBCS submission contained a Hulk 180 which came back Married the inner pages were slightly higher than the cover maybe by 1/32 inch noticed it after the fact now I inspect all books much closer. | ||

| I've replaced a lot of staples and you can never bend them back the way they came off the press also as mentioned the holes get ragged no matter how careful you are. | ||

| I suspect that there are many higher grade, high price, high volume books with undetected married pages, replaced staples etc. When books like IH181 have the odd combination of very high supply and very high pricing they have, there are likely many “combination” books out there. The sheer quantity vs value makes it unlikely for some to NOT slip through the cracks. Just using IH181 as an example because of the sheer volume and hilariously high prices. Same would apply to ASM129 and books of that ilk. |
