Is this a distributor's "stripe"?15884

I have a hundreds of Marvel issues that I collected during mid-1970's and more than a few of them have what appears to be a marker or ink blot along the top or bottom edge of the book. I've read about "Distributor's stripes" but my understanding is those typically come in various colors and are elongated along the edge of the book.

On my issues the color appears to be always black, or perhaps a very dark blue and are very small, either 1/8" or 1/4" wide at the most. I purchased the issues myself and remember these marks being on the books at the time I bought them off the rack. Are these marks also Distributor identifiers, or something else? Thanks for your help.
