Won in the MCS auction last evening, and I was really amazed at the people who signed this...Julie Strain, Kevin Eastman, Berni Wrightson, Mark Bode, and I am fairly sure the upper right is Scott Hampton. I have a feeling one of the sigs is Bill Sienkiewicz as well....but that still leaves at least three I dont have a guess for....four if that isnt Bill Sienkiewicz...anyone have a guess?

I can't find a 100% match online but I think the center right one in gold is Jeff Jones.

Mark Bode above the barcode, Kevin Eastman and Rick Veitch at the bottom.

Index lifted from an ebay posting in case it helps identify some likely candidates.

So we still need a name for the two scribbled black names lower center....one looks like Bill Sienkiewicz to me, though. I cant make out the one far right

Worth it just for the Julie Strain sig.

Hey Adam, good to see you here and following things...yeah, I thought the price was fair for Strain, and Eastman, along with Bernie Wrightson, nevermind the others. If that is Jeff jones signature she is now passed away as well.

Here’s a pic of Sienkiewicz’s signature from eBay. Looks pretty close.

love these threads. I honestly can't see anything other than the first letter of the last black signature...but could it be Gil Bruvel and he was short on room for the whole sig so crossed his first and last name? The first part looks very similar.
bruvel sig

With the book in hand am considering sending this one along to BAS and see what they can certify.

I have reasonable confidence in

Julie Strain
Bernie Wrightson
Jeff Jones

All Deceased

Bill Sienkiewicz
Kevin Eastman
Mark Bode
Scott Hampton
Rick Veitch

There is still that scribble at the edge in black, with Etapi making the best guess so far...does anyone have another take on it?
I am assuming this is the one that isnt identified and I havent crossed it up with another name.

Sorry, I got distracted. The signature above my post is not Bill Sienkiewicz.

Best guess so far has been Gil Bruvel, makes you sort of wish that it had been documented who did what here !

That book is going to cost a fortune on signature verification alone. I hope they have a sale when your ready to submit...

I was thumbing through the inside of the book and have found perhaps half a dozen more signatures inside never mentioned in the sale.

I appear to have found John Severin, and Dave dorman for instance. Will get some pictures when time allows.

Notice that Severin is also now deceased, so four of the signatures appear to be people who has since passed

Wow that’ll be amazing slab if you can get them all verified. If you’re not sure of the last signatures, probably the other creators in the issue or series?

Good luck!

The slab thing is a problem though...CGC doesnt do signatures as far as verifying, and CBCS does not slab magazines...so you either slab with no information about the signatures and take the huge hit on grade, or no slab and authenticate the signatures. My take is get the signatures done, and deal with the slab perhaps when CBCS gets on that canoe

Also one unknown in silver, first page unknown. Consider it possibly Francois Boucq

You would have paid a lot more for that book if I hadn't been busy the night the auction closed. Congrats on the pickup.

That is amazing!

I’ve been dabbling in some of the old Heavy Metal magazines myself.

That’s such a great pick up!

@Darkseid_of_town - That is a tough one. That autograph morphs right into that background artwork. Nice win nonetheless.

Note to self, do not communicate with @SteveRicketts on targeted auctions that I intend to snipe. Or better yet, I should communicate with him and if he has interest, I should just move on and stop adding to my collection.

I am guessing Etapi hit it right, saying Gil Bruvel as he did do some work in the issue and the beginning of the name does seem really close to his signature. I am a bit fascinated that it was sold without mentioning the internal signatures, one being John Severin. I always wanted a Wrightson signature, and coupled with julie strain, eastman, and sienkiewicz, the rest were just gravy. I have always liked julie and used to correspond with her in the nineties.

Thanks for the thoughtful words Steve...I am curious what is the draw here for you at least...for me it was the Julie Strain signature coupled with Eastmans as well as Wrightson and Bill Sienkiewicz. the other signatures are all a bonus to me. I knew Julie before she passed, and had spent months corresponding with her via snailmail back in the 90's . I had always wanted a Wrightson signature , and I had been semi interested in Seinkiewicz due to the large body of his work. Was there a particular signature that was a draw for you or like me, just the whole assemblage ?

I was a Heavy Metal junkie as a teenager. This book was just covered in heavy hitting signatures, many of which can no longer be acquired. I put a tracking bid on it and was willing to go after it hard the night of the auction, but something came up that kept me away from bidding.

I'm glad it went to someone I know and who will appreciate it. That's a solid book you should be proud to own. Congrats on the win.

I always checked them out at the comic store as a kid but no way could I have brought one into my house. No National Lampoon either.

I was careful to keep them out of the prying eyes of my mom. They were just comic magazines, after all. They flew under the radar for a long time.

One day I accidentally left this issue laying out with the front cover facing down. Mom walked into my room, glanced down at the back cover...and lost her Christian mind. Then proceeded to pull every Heavy Metal and National Lampoon magazine I owned and threw them in the garbage can. 😂

Front cover...

Back cover...

Oh shit, if my mom had found that back cover I would have been out of the house with the magazine. She would have never considered there's a humor element to it.
