Subscription crease grade impact15824

looking at getting some more books together for a submission. Have this tec359 that has a subscription crease evident on the back cover. Had it pressed twice and still there. What kind of grade do you think it might come back as. I appreciate your input

Really solid book. I'd say that's somewhere in the 8.0 range give or take a grade point up or down.

First off, kudos on a great copy of this highly sought after key! Unfortunately, the subscription crease will knock the grade down to the 6.0 range. At this point the grader will take into account the other issues (color breaking crease bottom right, the small chunk out of the top middle of front cover, blunted corners etc.) Don't shoot the messenger, especially since I would love to own this book, but I'm going to say 5.5. By the way, nice pressing work. Nuff said...

Sad thing is pressing won't do anything for the color breaks. Might help with the corners but jeezee. Still a nice book

I appreciate everyone's input. Was expecting around a 6.0, since the crease is on the back, I didn't know if there was a less impact on the grade. I'll share the results when I get the book back.

@Batman66 - Fantastic looking book. I think it could pull a 6.5, maybe even a 7.0, even with the crease (I think you can get a 6.5 with a popped staple, so why not with a crease?).

That is 6.0+

Am surprised the crease still held that shape after two presses.

It may be useful to take a photo top edge-on.

my 8.0 was too high...but I think a 7.0 is definitely possible.

Too bad you can't "press" the ink into the crease from the surrounding areas.

I haven't aired it out. It's part of the provenance. Galen130 private msg quote post Address this user
6.5 tops. A press may help flatten that crease, bit it’s old so it will still be noticeable. Still a great book to have…wish I had one. 😥🤣

Books like that (at least copies I've seen graded by CBCS) will often receive a check mark. Beautiful book, and a great copy.

@GAC - The determining factor of where a comic starts out during the grading process is the presence of a "Grade Limiting Defect". Unfortunately a subscription crease is just that, just like missing a Marvel value stamp. No matter how gorgeous the book is, it's best grade is determined by it grade limiting defects.

I had a sub crease on DD 171 and it got a lot of points taken off but I think it was graded incorrectly by the seller.

Understood and thanks. What's the top grade for a subscription crease defect?

I think the difference is front vs back cover. If there is no distinction then it is a case where the market should ignore the grade.

If the visible crease would be on the front I would have a different view.

Subscription crease normally brings a book down to very good range.

Also depends on the severity of the crease.
Is it still noticable in the interior pages?

I myself like sub copies as they can usually look better then their grade.

With this copy the sub crease is noticable on the back cover.

I'd say a 5.0 maybe a 5.5.

I may have to look at it better at the pics.

Nice book 👍

A popped stable is not as severe as a crease that runs down the length of a book.

On a sweet copy with a popped stable the highest grade you can get is a 8.0

Here is an example, haven't bothered to get it graded as it's not worth it for a 8.0

I was thinking this. But it brings up a good question about how they "count" flaws. Is this a 5.5 with a check? Or a 6.5?

do they start at a 7.0 do to sub then start subracting half points for every color break? I have GL #3 that came back a 5.5 that's WAY worse off than this book. It would be a shame to think this would be the same grade.

I always thought a check mark is because of a defect inside the book made the outer appearance better looking then the grade assigned.

I could be wrong, but my impression was that the checkmark could be used for any flaw that wasn’t readily noticeable. That could be a defect on an interior page - like writing, tears, corner missing, etc., or a very light stain, water mark, or bend on the front or back cover.

That's always been my understanding...the checkmark is used whenever the book looks better than the assigned grade for any reason.
