Trying to remember an 80's B&W Comic.15697

Collector AdamX private msg quote post Address this user
What brought me here was this amazing thread (https://forum.cbcscomics.com/topic/8944/page/1/1980s-indie-comics/) - and, it made me think of an ... I want to say it was an 80's (could have been early 90s - but I swear it was 80s)... Anyway, an 80's Indie Comic... that was Black and White. It has two stories - the main story - I, ironically, can't remember. But it had a second story, that had NOTHING to do with the main story - about a guy in a space ship, something goes wrong, and he fights (my memory tells me, slimy looking) aliens. The art styles, was pretty heavy inks, similar to the original TMNT from what I remember, but the (slimy?) aliens were a bit cartoonish, as was the male character.

Anyone by chance, have any idea what it might be based off that?

I'd say the main story (that was unrelated) was probably either fantasy based or super hero based (as those were the things I would have been drawn to - to pick it up).

And, I think - this only ran for one issue. One of the many indies, that didn't go anywhere, similar to CROSSED SWORDS and others.

Great Thread, thanks for that!

I've actually GOT a bunch of those in that thread! Neat.

I wish I could think of what book you're thinking of ... kinda vague ... but hey good luck!

Yeah I've tried googling - but any time you throw in the word "aliens" - the movie comics take up all the results.

describes a third of the indies out there during the 80's and the start of aliens, predator and so many other properties....a needle in a needle stack

Yeah - II get it. That's why when I saw the thread (aforementioned) where it seemed a lot of folks had some of these great indies back then - that it might ring a bell with someone.
To be clear - it's split into two stories - the first story has zero to do with the 4 or 5 page space alien adventure at the back. I even think there's a write up about this special artist writer that preludes the space one.
The first story, I believe was either fantasy (most likely) or "super hero" like (sort of like Ex-Mutants and such).
If memory serves me right, as I said, the aliens in question were cartoonish, and slimy - if I remember they sort of look like the aliens seen in the Chex Quest game - https://icdn2.digitaltrends.com/image/digitaltrends/2020-05-16-4.jpg

@AdamX Wish I could help but you’ve got me stumped 🤔. I do like to revisit my 80s comics pretty frequently. If I find anything that fits I will post it here.

Yeah, I love those older indie comics. ADVENTURERS is probably my favorite. (Well, aside from the original run of ElfQuest in B&W Magazine format - still, to this day, some of the best comic stuff in those 20 issues - but ElfQuest got pretty big after that - with reprints in Marvel, then deals with DC, and such). I even made a site for the Adventurers comic, a facebook page, and such.
So I was poking around - looked at the old EX-MUTANTS comics I have, CROSSED SWORDS, and just started thinking about all those cool indie comics, some of them only lasting one issue - and then thought of the one - I am now trying to remember - and either don't have - or don't know which of the MANY comic boxes it might be in (wasn't in with most of my other indie stuff) - and it could be during one of my moves it was in a box I gave to a local comic store, no idea. But I remember it for sure. Just can't remember the damn details of it.

For some reason when you describe those aliens what pops into my head are aliens drawn by Wally Wood or Bernie Wrightson or Will Eisner, those stylistic 50's sort of aliens. Then again that's my head.

@AdamX Loved Elfquest! It is pretty much forgotten today but it’s definitely something everyone should read. I still have a complete set of the B&W magazines. I also liked Adventurers. Probably the best of the D&D type comics of that period.

MyComicShop is where I went to look at the suggested titles too.
Neither of those look familiar.
I am going to be upset if it's like in the back of an ELFLORD comic (which I have all of... and honestly, feels like it would be... a fit...) Or like in the back of LEATHER & LACE (also by the folks who made ELFLORD... but I no longer have those... Those appealed to my very young self... lol)
On MyComicShop - I was trying to look at comics by publisher (such as ETERNITY, who did EX-MUTANTS and such) to see if I could find a cover that looks familiar.
TROLL LORDS looks familiar, but MyComicShop doesn't make mention of a secondary story, so it's probably not that (though I am sure I owned a few issues of TROLL LORDS).

I have complete sets of Book I & II, but not 3 yet.

I notice your Ninja Elite doesn't include #4. Is that just because you don't have it?

I just started adding NINJA ELITE a few months ago (I have'em all), however I'll spare the long story - but medical issues arose with my wife and I've lost some steam and energy as I focused on her. (But I do plan on adding the rest!)

I have picked up many of these over the past year or two. I had most of them at some point so an re-acquiring them. You can often find them in the $1 boxes at comic shows.

So I kept digging around - and because I was beginning to doubt myself. I started going through my issues of ELFLORD - and sure enough there's some backstories in them that have nothing to do with ELFLORD. And two of the issues have art by Dave Cooper for the backstory. And the grimy nature of his art in these looks like it might be right along the lines. But didn't find the one I was looking for. Ah, well. That would have been too easy.

I had no way of knowing that 9.8 graded copies signed by Adam Hughes weren't what you were looking for. drchaos private msg quote post Address this user
@AdamX The publishers of the Adventurers comic series had a sci fi series called Star Rangers.

I think I still have some copies.

Is that the one you referred to in the OP?

I have STAR RANGERS. The story in question was a "back up" story in an issue of some Indie B&W.
And I don't think it was related to the main story of the comic. Similar to the ELFLORD comics, where the main stories were about ELFLORD, then featured a back up story by Dave Cooper, which had nothing to do with the Elflord world.

It's not a big deal. I've gone - what? 20? 30? - I don't even want to think that it's been more than 30 years, since I probably thumbed through it (or remembering that I did... I may still have it in one of my many comic boxes)

First Welcome to the forum!

While you have me stumped as well, I do share your love of the eighties Indies!

Ive had multiple threads featuring 80's indie titles

American Flagg, Grim Jack to name a few........

I also came into favor with the elf-quest storyline back in the day as well, mainly the Marvel color reprints.

I agree with @michaelekrupp comments, El-quest is something all should read. Its an epic story that covers everything from valor and honor, joy and Sarrow to love, Hate and envy...... it covers the whole spectrumm of emotions.

Yes! The reprints by Marvel, are of the original 20 issue B&W!
And if anyone in this thread is interested in reading it - WaRP Graphics (Wendy and Richard Pini) made it, and most of their comics available for reading, digitally, for free!

You can go here - and again, I can't recommend it enough.
You might think the first five issue start slow - but trust me, it's an incredible ride with a great pay off. You may even cry by the end!
http://www.elfquest.com/read/index.php?s=Elfquest

If you wanna read other great ElfQuest (after the above), I'd recommend Kings of the Broken Wheel and Siege at Blue Mountain.
http://www.elfquest.com/read/digitalEQ.html

As a side note to my quest - I am 99% convinced, after looking at some of the "back up" stories in DRAGONRING - that it's probably Dave Cooper who probably wrote and drew the thing I am remembering - and considering how close he and Barry Blair worked (of Elflord, Aircel Comics), I bet I saw it in the back of one of these Aircel titles.

I could be wrong about it being Dave... but the art is jiving with my memory. And it also being B&W seems to be pointing that way.

I've got all the B&W original Elfquests from FantaGraphics as well as a slew of the various other runs (Marvel, etc.) They're all NM-NM+

Let me know what you're missing and if you'd like to take a look.
I Also have all the trade-size large combined volumes for Elfquest that came out later.

FantaCo was my LCS and I was there when they opened, went every chance I got, so I got a lot from them.

If you all enjoy B&W Indies all of our books are B&W. In particular we re-publish the 80s Harrier Comics and 90s Lightning Comics. Digital, but eventually we will get them back in paper. Our MEGABOOK anthology is available in print on Amazon and digital.

Tons of free reading. Just put $0 in the Pay if you want, because I'd much rather have people reading than not. We have to enable that function to publish at DriveThru.

Enjoy!
