As for “shill bidding” being rampant on ebay. No, just no. Transaction volumes are too high and there are transaction costs once an auction closes. Shill bidding on ebay is not going to make or break anything and should not impact a rational bidder.
Well since I worked for ebay during the nineties on the Powerseller Platinum program I will have to let you know you are badly informed, and yes it still goes on daily with people inflating the prices for their own items. Rather naive and yes, it can heavily impact a bidder, especially a rational one....one of the worst ones is where a shill bidder jumps in, drives the price higher at the close of the sale, then cancels his bids dropping the auction on you at a far higher rate than you would have paid originally. It happens all the time, and just yes, sorry

I permanently closed my fee-bay account over a year ago because of all the shenanigans with them AND buyers. Looks like I left just before the 💩 really hit the fan. I don’t miss it and I wasn’t a fan of the sniping.

it would be easier if eBay limit you to bid only a certain amount of times, as I've been outbid within the last minute by a bidder who dropped 5 bids or more, barely increasing their max bid, trying to beat me out as low as possible.

or possibly, would work better if a bidder had to wait 5 minutes before being able to bid again, because if you're trying to beat my max bid by a handful of change, you obviously don't want the item very much.

The ones that tick me off are where i place my bid, they bid much higher, outbid me, then cancel their bid so they can see what my bid was....

and the times I have bid an item and appeared to be winning it very cheaply, like a sale closing on a holiday or early morning....and suddenly get outbid.
Then a week later the same item appears on that same sellers auctions, despite the fact it supposedly sold and feedback was even given.......

Few weeks ago I had this happen with four items I won for .99 cents at 5 am in the morning...got outbid the final few minutes. feeback was left the seller and the same items were offered again a week later, ending at a time much later in the day and the items sold for much higher pricing.

I've actually lost a couple of eBay auctions where my snipe was the highest price but less than the eBay increment over whatever the bid was at 4 seconds before close instead of 3. So there is some amount of increment system.

Meh, if you lose you lose. I lost one tonight. A CBCS 9.6 X-Men 129. It went for $849. I bid $795. Oh, well. I guess someone wanted it $54 more than I did.

Edit: Apparently it was $841, not $849.

Has that book fallen $1,000 in FMV from the high? I thought 9.6's were going in the $1,800 range at one point?

We all know that some of these supposed market prices are absurd. Good to see something sell closer to reality.

Nope. Everything you mention above is inaccurate. Another of your “logical fallacies” lol.

All the more reason not to show your cards ‘till the end.

I am surprised people still do auctions for things like comics where there are plenty of BIN options. Why do they think they’re going to get a better price than another book that can be bought immediately, no fuss no muss? It’s great for us buyers to get a deal as long as you do a little research ahead and know what other BINs are going (or not) going for.

If there is no completion, go for it the auction. Otherwise you’re just setting yourself up for aggravation as a seller. There was a period of time I was doing live auctions and half the buyers were deadbeats.

BIN is the way to go for selling books, I’ve found. Line auctions are just to try to get better deals than What’s already out there as BINs. Anyone bidding higher than available BINs is screwing themselves.

I snipe sometimes but most times I just fire and forget. Especially true with Comic Link. I can't stay up til 11:30PM on a Monday. Work comes too early in the morning for that nonsense so I just fire a totally absurd bid in there and see what happens.

What gets me pissed off is when the seller never ships the book you won and you have to go through eBay for a refund (happened to me with a Swamp Thing #7), or when the seller just stops/cancels the auction before it ends, probably because the bids weren’t as high as they wanted (happened several times with auctions by Dave and Adams on eBay).

BIN are the way to go!

Example, many years ago I was putting together my TTA pedigree run. (Still going)

Anyway there was a TTA 80 twin cities copy
I needed a 80 but there was also a Susha News copy of issue 80 on Metropolis website.

So when the bidding got over $300 for Twin cities copy at HA.
I did the BIN at metro for $285

Pic of Twin Cities

Notice the indented staples on the Twin Cities copy.

My copy I ended up buying.

My copy no indented staples.

There is a date written in biro and the Susha News copy has white pages so I bought it for $120 cheaper.

When books are over $100 I tend to do a little research as the BIN price somewhere else could be cheaper.

A snipers money is just as good as anyone else's. I think sniping has been around on ebay since they started. Only now there are cool programs that can do it for you.

I don't really buy much anymore but I have sniped (manually and with a program)and have also been sniped...I don't let it bother me...If you lose the auction just move on....

I sell the majority of my listings with BIN / Best Offer but when I do sell with an auction format I don't really care how it sells. Just that it sells.
If sniping is what you do.....Snipe away I say
