Pressing Question (no pun intended)15637

I have had a CBCS-graded IH 181 over at MCS for some time now but it was my first CBCS slab and I didn't get it pressed/cleaned when I sent it in.

It got graded a 4.0 and I am thinking if I want to get it sold faster it would have a better chance to sell if it were graded higher and I'm wishing I did that.

So, has anyone ever had to have one sent to CBCS from MCS for pressing purposes, then go back to MCS for sale?

They have it now, and I've heard that they're so close physically that they will bring books over for grading, etc. but what about pressing?

If I want them to send it to me they charge a fee, but what about having them send to CBCS, is that a thing anyone's done?

The value is high enough that I would pay for Rapid Press/Screen/Press Fast Pass.

The knowledge base of forum members here is truly excellent, so I thank you in advance for the advice.

I don't know personally but I would just email Esme at MCS. I doubt they care if you're getting it pressed or just graded but I'm sure she can answer your question either way.

OK Thanks, I will do that. I've had several emails with her for various reasons since getting it back from CBCS and she's usually very responsive.

I was going to ask them first but I thought the forum would know if there were negatives in doing that or excessive hassle, etc.

Well that would be true for everything in the world, really. And would defeat the purpose of trying to get as much as possible for it.

If I can pay a $150 bucks in pressing fees and shipping and get it looking / graded higher to sell for more then its worth it more than dropping the price 500$ just to get it sold.

You said yourself that it had been for sale for some time. Usually the only reason that a Hulk 181 doesn't sell, in any grade, is that it is overpriced.

I looked at the Hulk #181 CBCS 4.0 photos at MCS. I don't think pressing and cleaning will do anything to improve the grade, based on several other Hulk graded 4.0 books I've looked at. I don't have much experience grading so I'm not sure if that's mold or dirt on the cover but it looks permanent.

No argument. Just don't want to drop it 500 bucks when I might pay 150 to get it upgraded and make that money.
I've watched 3 CGC the month before that were worse shape than mine go for more, and also that color on their scan SUCKS, the book is not dark on the back like that.
There's no mold , if you mean those two spots up in the title they're dirt. It went straight from a long box that was sealed , bagged and boarded since 1981 to CBCS, but those spots were there.

Like I said, I wish I'd done it differently and asked for pressing/cleaning right off the bat.

Well "some time" is about a month I guess. Not that long in comic years.

Well it looks like your best option is to contact Este and arrange for the comic to be pressed and graded at the rapid tier. It's best to call and it's probably easy to do. I've done it for a reholder and they just submit through their dealer account and charge your MCS account. It might be too late to contact her today, but call sometime tomorrow and be done with it.

I think it's looking more like 8 weeks if that matters. 6 weeks to grade and press, 2 weeks for MCS to pick it up and rescan it into their system. Investing $150 seems like it'll be worth the cost. Good luck with the grade and eventual sale.

Oh I was referring to how long it was on MCS, but yeah I'll defer to your experience with how long the process would take at this point.

Maybe I can get 1 full number grade increase to 5.0 AND lower the price ... at least then I can pay the hospital bills. Life comes at you in threes sometimes fours. This years been a lot of life.

Hey I sincerely enjoy your posts and appreciate the input and the last thing I would want to do is rub anyone's fur the wrong way on the forum but man LOL thanks for Mansplaining.
So I'm sorry I prompted your eye-roll and triggered a sigh and the need to create a teaching metaphor using outrageously sarcastic examples but seriously? You felt I needed it broken down like "... Your intent was likely not to insult me but to pass on your knowledge and for that I am as grateful as I should be but intent vs. execution ... really? Quintillion? I promise you, I'm not an idiot. I have been looking at every eBay listing for the last 3 months as well as comicLink, GoCollect, MCS and other sites to determine what a fair price - albeit not on the low side for quick sale - would be, and started before I even sent it off for grading.

I'm not charging a quintillion more than I watched similarly-graded examples and examples in worse condition sell for and that's the whole reason for the pressing question. I was offered 3800$ for it and I honestly think I can get more. And If it can warrant a higher price by being pressed and that expense ratio is more that the loss of selling it as-is and reducing the price then it's worth the cost of pressing which may also buffer that consignment fee.

So to carry through your metaphors, in real estate they dress the house, put in new carpets, update the paint kitchen cabinets and bathroom fixtures, upgrade landscaping for curb appeal etc. Same thing.

If I have to wait a bit for a sale, fine, but that doesn't mean it makes sense to try to make it as attractive as possible to someone.

And again, I appreciate the input, but maybe less condescending next time?
