We in the Saunders family were in for a big surprise last week--Buddy had a stroke last Thursday morning. Fortunately we caught the stroke early and the ambulance was able to get him to the hospital quickly. The stroke occurred in the left side of his brain, which controls movement on the right side of his body. He's been in the hospital since then and has been getting good care. My mom Judy, who is a saint and an angel in human form, has been with him every day. The current hospital policy only allows one visitor per day due to Covid concerns, although the hospital kindly bent the rules a little and let me in to see him with her the first day.
In the few short days since he had the stroke, Buddy has already started to show good improvement. The first day he could only wiggle the toes on his right foot, and now he's already able to walk across the room. He will have plenty of physical therapy and occupational therapy ahead of him to develop new neural pathways and regain greater control over the muscles that were affected by the stroke. He's mentally sharp and is in good spirits, and has been cracking a few jokes with my mom and me and the hospital staff.
If anyone would like to send any well-wishes to Buddy, you can either email me at conan@mycomicshop.com with the message you'd like me to pass along to him, or mail a card to:

Judy and I will be collecting those messages and getting them all to Buddy. I know he will appreciate hearing from you.
-Buddy and Judy in 2020
While Judy has been with Buddy, I have been at the Lone Star Comics/MyComicShop offices to help keep things running smoothly here. Buddy has decided that he is ready to retire and officially hand leadership of the company to me and Judy. We as a family have planned for this for a while (though of course not under these unfortunate circumstances) and I'm comfortable stepping into this expanded role. I'm grateful to my dad for the decades of hard work and smart effort he's poured into building Lone Star Comics into the successful and well-respected business that it is today. I have learned so much from the example he has set for me over a lifetime. And I'm thankful for the amazing group of employees we have here, many of whom have been with us for many years. They're pros at what they do and it's a great relief to me and Judy to know how much we can count on all of them. If Buddy wishes to return to work down the line, we will welcome him back in any capacity he wishes. Or if he wants to enjoy retirement and possibly focus more on writing, I know it's something he's wanted for a long time.
You'll be hearing more from me in future emails, although I probably won't be writing here every single week the way that Buddy has. Thanks to all of you for your continued support, and thanks to the extended Lone Star family and friends that have already reached out with expressions of concern and prayer and well-wishes for Buddy. If there is anything that I can do for you, I can be reached at conan@mycomicshop.com.
Best,
