I think the fact that any job pays less than a mazillion dollars per year is just a sign of our inhumanity. Everyone knows that businesses make a gazillion dollars per year and not being willing to give an employee at least a mazillion is just greed.

I don't want anyone who only makes that low of a salary handling my bronze age gems. I would rather pay more for my submissions to have seasoned experienced people handling the books. Too many books are getting damaged from some posts I have read in here. Those books are being handled by low wage earning people.
I have handled literally 10's of thousands of books. I have damaged less than 10 of them. The arch nemesis "tape" got me 3 times. Dropped a couple and dinged a couple more. And I have 30 years experience handling comics.
Imagine a newbie who has only held less than a hundred books??? NO, I say NO! lol...
Pay people who know what they are doing and train the newbies with cheap books only.

Still want to know about the return shipping insurance. Anyone know what is covered when we choose Fed Ex? 30 books costs 72.00 to get them returned after grading. How much insurance is with that???

@Nearmint67

You still leave the tape on the flap when you extract a book from a bag? How odd.

Any plant has accidents, be it with product or personnel. Simply a way of life, no matter how much training or pay level of people. There is no way around it.

To eliminate to the level you are expecting would mean only hiring people with Archival degrees. Those folks are going to work for the Smithsonian or other museums. They aren't going to be bothered carting your books to and fro.

They only grey area is the return shipping. The options only show the amount you would pay to have them returned and by which carrier. The return shipping does not show the amount the books are insured for.
Perhaps that 200.00 we choose during submission, carries through to return shipping???
My crystal ball is a bit cloudy on that one. Can you shed some clarity on the insurance for return shipping???

I believe the way it works is that whatever value you put down for the book is what they will insure it for on the return shipping. This is how it works at CGC anyway. There is pretty much no chance that the value you specify is what they insure it for while in their possession as they would need to adjust grading prices based on the amount, e.g. a $10,000 book would cost them far more to insure than a $100 book. Both companies no doubt carry some amount of hazard insurance but do they carry enough considering the massively increased amount of books under their possession? Hopefully we never need to find out.

That hasn't happened for over 20 years. Just a recounting of how the tiny number of books I damaged happened.

I just got off the phone with Steve Borock. He is at the office grading comics on a Sunday. He gave me some info that I think many people here will find to be good news. So, after making sure it was OK to share, here it is. CBCS has hired six new people recently to help across the board!! And yes, customer service is one of the areas. CBCS is growing to meet the incredible increase in submissions!!

In need of one more? 20 years of compliance/shipping experience in my rear view mirror. The opportunity to be immersed in comics all week seems intriguing.

Also a noob submitter and forum poster:

Have 6 currently in the base grading queue at CBCS: a Joe Q signature event piece (received), 4 moderns (labels), and a silver age grail (received).

I vividly remember sitting there just before Memorial Day trying to decide between just submitting the Silver Age book with Rapid/Quickstream or send it in base with 4 other modern books for nearly the same price.

Let's just say I'm waiting patiently in the Multiverse of Madness... Hopefully they arrive before Shuma-G!

Well after several tries I was finally able to get a response on my order that has been there since 05/04/21. It had gone in to grading on 07/28/21 so I was hoping it might be finished soon. But that is not to be.

Was told they would be moving in to encapsulation soon and hopefully in to shipping in the next 4 to 6 weeks and yes that is correct another four to six weeks from encapsulation to shipping on 8 books and yes it is modern but that puts me into November now. I was expecting no later than beginning to middle of October.

So if you go by only working days that is around 135 days.

Mine went into "processing" on 1/13/21. They are now in "Labels," so you can expect a 10-11 month+ turnaround.

UPDATE: All 21 books I sent to CGC received on 6/10/21 have been graded, encapsulated, labeled, and shipped. My 3 books sent to CBCS received on 4/17/21 almost 2 full months earlier are still sitting in “grading.”
I really wanted to give CBCS my business to have equally trusted options for book grading, but 23 weeks now with little to no movement is disappointing. I have another 25 books I’ve almost finished pressing and was hoping to split the order between CGC and CBCS, but it’s difficult to justify sending any of these to CBCS.

Can you tell us whether all books were submitted under just regular modern? And when did you actually mail the books out? It seems that both companies can take quite awhile just to mark the books as received.

At this point I'd be hesitant to send books to either company under regular modern slow track. The good old days of 20 business day turnaround seem to be gone, maybe for good. CGC Fast Track and CBCS 2-Day Modern may be the only way to go unless you're willing to wait extreme times to get your books back. Who knows, maybe this is the model they both want to move to so they end up grading less trash and still have the same revenues.

All books sent modern. Only difference is CBCS books had VSP added but as per their submissions specs only adds 1 week.
I refuse to pay more to fast track books for my PC, to me that stinks of a money grab.

Just for everyone's reference I'll be at 24 weeks on Friday. 12 books, 3 needed signature verification. I've been in "Labels" on my invoice for at least a couple of months now, though admittedly I don't know what the order of CBCS' process is, besides that labels obvious come after "received". lol....sigh. I'm hoping my books come soon, but sadly I'm just shooting for before the end of the year now.

Yeah, I can understand this sentiment. Honestly I think it's a bit of a catch 22. The way book prices have been rising lately its likely that the tier for many bronze/copper keys like ASM 194, ASM 300, etc. keep rising so the longer you wait to grade them the more expensive it will become. For many books it may make sense to just shell out the extra money now just to lock in the lower tier grading fees (even with the added fast track fees).

On the other hand, grading is expensive and can leave you without your books for extended periods of time. Also, once you grade the books they take up way more space and are much heavier to transport. If you're really not looking to sell the books then maybe it is just best to keep them safely bagged, boarded and boxed for now.

It's a tough call, but with the current state of the certification companies I'm leaning toward just doing nothing for now with my PC books. For books I'll like to sell I'm contemplating the fast track route, despite the fact that it hurts the overall profit.

@flanders if I were to submit anything further I'd absolutely do 2 Modern to get my books back faster. I was semi-okay with 3-4 months but now that I'm blowing past that by a couple of months I'm definitely not entirely happy.

@EvolutionOfEvil I think that's what everyone else is thinking, which is why the standard modern tier is getting so backed up.

I think I'm in the same boat...my only issue is there are some books I'd like to grade to sell but I have multiples of them so I would like to keep the highest grade for myself

For example I have 3 Heir to the Empire #1's - 1 is for sure worse than the other 2 but those 2 are both 9.8 contenders - maybe send in all 3 have MCS pick them up from CBCS and then have MCS ship back the 1 I want to keep?? is that a thing that can be done?
