Opinions Sought: eBay Purchase15523

"There, their, they're." GAC private msg quote post Address this user
Just curious what the forum thinks.

I bought this book off eBay. The three top pics below are from the listing. The fourth is what I got. The Description said 9.2 but the picture and title stated 9.0 and I fully expected a 9.0. The opinions sought are regarding the scratch, not 9.2/9.0 grade. I got the grade i was expecting.

There's a scratch across the label shown in the bottom picture. Personally, I'm not really botheted by it as the book inside is perfectly fine. I'd rather there not be a scratch though.

I'm just curiuos what the forum would do; contact the seller and complain/advise, leave negative feedback, return the book or do nothing and leave positive or no feedback?

Damaged in transit? How was it packed?

Sorry...I forgot that piece. It was packaged well...bubble envelopes with news paper within a box. Tightly packaged. I guess it could have been damaged in transit but I'm not sure how a scratch like that could happen. I don't think the contents could move within the box.

Is that a Crack or a cut? Looks like a razor cut from the pic.
Maybe the seller cut it while packing/wrapping it for shipment?

it's not a cut or crack...if you run your fingernail across it, you feel a very very slight disturbance on the plastic..its virtually smooth....its more of a "smudge" that can not be removed...I will say it looks worse in the picture.

It feels like it could be buffed out but I'm not sure it actually can be.

Anyone reccomend a buffing compound? I'd like to try and get this off?

Toothpaste is a cheap possible solution. Everybody has it so you aren't buying anything

I would just try some turtle spray wax first and see if it looks better before you go making a mess with buffing compound

As someone well versed in car detailing - including plastics - I would recommend against trying to buff that out.

There is as good a chance you will cause the surrounding area to haze. For plastics (like headlight lens covers) it is a multi step approach with different compounds and different grits…

As for ebay if not apparent and not noted in original listing you should ask seller for some accommodation (aka some $ back).

If they refuse then the next steps are yours. I agree the book is what matters but if the scratch was not in the orig listing it definitely impacts value even if only slightly.

I would try a wet sandpaper of 1,500 grit and 2,000 grit. Those are used to sand the clear coats on vehicles. Both grits are great for removing light clear coat scratches that can't be removed by rubbing compound and buffing. Use 2,000 grit for final sanding to achieve smooth surface.

I would try it in an area thats not noticeable first though.
Even if it hazes a tad, you can spray on Headlight restorer spray to get rid of the foggy haze if there is one left behind. Like Meguiar's Headlight Coating Spray.

I think I'm in agreement with you re: trying to buff it out.

I've sent a message to the seller asking him his opinion on it...I sent him pictures too. I'll wait for his response. I did notice neg feedback for him for the same thing...undisclosed markings on a slab...I should have learned from that.

@GAC - I think you were right to contact the seller with pictures and put the ball in their court. The pictures the seller provided on eBay do not match what you received. Let us know what happens.

I've never had to refund through eBay sales...is it a complicated transaction/process to do? The seller said he'd refund me yesterday....then after asking him today he said he'd do it this morning.....and still nothing. It's only $20 but I kinda want to he done with it. Am I being impatient?

Refunding is not complicated. However, I'd give him a few days. Sometimes life happens.

Yeah, it’s only a few clicks. But I haven’t dealt with it since the payment management changeover.

Think of it this way: you have written confirmation of an agreed upon refund. E-bay will 100% have your back on this one.

I’d submit the book for a reholder at anytime.

The one or two times I've done refunds without a return I had trouble figuring out how to do it on eBay and had to do it through PayPal. And like @Bronte said, sometimes life happens.
