When Heather Douglas was still a girl, her father was driving her and her mother through the desert when they accidentally happened to see the spaceship of Thanos land; the space villain did not want any witnesses, so he destroyed their car. Heather was thrown clear and survived, but her parents were killed. She was found by Thanos’ father, Mentor, who took her to his home world, Titan, to be raised by the monks of Shao-Lom. From the monks, Heather develops her body to its full potential, becoming a formidable martial artist. They teach Heather various scientific disciplines such as chemistry and genetic engineering; but most significantly, they help Heather tap into her latent psionic powers, present within all humans. Heather is able to develop her mental powers far beyond even those of her teachers, so much so that she eventually mentally contacts a powerful entity called the Dragon of the Moon. The Dragon immediately tries to corrupt and take her over, but she fights back, driving the Dragon away. This fills her with pride and an overwhelming sense of superiority. To commemorate her victory, she takes the name Moondragon. Unknown to Heather, the Dragon subtly continues to influence her on a subconscious level. Moondragon first appeared in Iron Man #54 (October 3, 1972).

Madame Xanadu’s full name was once Nimue Inwudu and she is the youngest sister of Morgana (to become Morgaine Le Fay) and Vivienne, the Lady of the Lake. She debuted in Doorway to Nightmare #1, (October 6, 1977). The sisters are descendants of the Elder Folk, survivors of Atlantis who evolved into the race known as the Homo magi. Madame Xanadu is the same Nimue who casts an imprisoning spell on her former lover Merlin, blaming him for manipulating Camelot and the course of history for his own gain. Merlin has the last laugh, though, as he succeeds in stripping her magic away from her, forcing her to use potions to maintain her immortality. The mysterious Phantom Stranger influences her betrayal of Merlin and the two continue to meet throughout the centuries, sharing an ambivalent relationship. Nimue wanders around the world for some time, becoming an advisor to many great rulers. She spends time in Kublai Khan’s court at Xanadu, leading to her assumed name of “Madame Xanadu.” Again she meets the Phantom Stranger. It does not go as expected, for she learns the Stranger walks outside of the timestream. During the French Revolution, she is able to regain her immortality by besting Death in a card game. In the 1940s, she has a sexual relationship with John Zatara, who wishes to marry her, but she foresees his true love, and the later existence of his daughter, Zatanna, “a love with whom she could never compete.” Despite this, she uses Zatara to trap and ensnare the Phantom Stranger, preventing him from witnessing, and affecting, the supernatural origins of the Spectre. Eventually, Madame Xanadu decides that she wants to atone for her sins and begins operating the fortune-telling parlor out of “the Village”. She however remains without any real magic might of her own, which has led her to manipulate various forces in order to gain power. Having developed herself as an advisor, she now meets clientele plagued by supernatural problems. Although she can advise them, some force prevents her from directly interfering in solving their troubles. If one of her clients manages to conquer a supernatural force, she can contain that entity in jars within her fortune parlor to prevent it from causing any further trouble.

The Rook family moved to the town of Litchfield, NH following an incident involving their daughter Sailor and a particularly vicious school bully named Annie. Sailor was attacked and Annie went missing, prompting rumours that Sailor killed her. Eventually the speculation grows to the point where Sailor’s father Charlie and mother Lucy decide that the only thing to do is move the family to a neighbouring town in the hopes of starting over again. This proves to be unsuccessful as some of the rumours have followed the family and Sailor still feels ostracized from her new school peers. The family is also largely unaware that the town is home to its own supernatural secrets, in particular a tradition where a person will pledge another to strange beings, wytches, in the nearby forest in order to gain a boon from them. Writer Scott Snyder came up with the idea for Wytches after recalling a childhood experience where he and a friend made up stories about a family of Satanists living in a nearby Pennsylvania forest that were constantly trying to capture the two boys. He later revisited the area out of nostalgia and saw a moving object that looked vaguely human, which made Snyder think that there was something in the forest that had been waiting for him to return.

Superman/Clark Kent and Lois Lane are among the best known fictional couples. They debuted together in 1938 and have remained in a complicated relationship ever since. The character’s relationship was based for a long time in a love triangle, in which Clark was interested in Lois, who was taken with Superman. Clark, unable to reveal to Lois that his mild-mannered demeanor was a ruse, was unable to compete for Lois’ affection. The irony being he was his own rival, seeing that Clark and Superman are the same person. Following John Byrne’s 1986 reboot, The Man of Steel, Clark’s character became not only the more dominant personality of the Clark Kent/Superman character, but also more outgoing, aggressive, and assertive. This allowed a more natural romance to develop between Lois and Clark. In the 1990s, Clark proposes marriage to Lois and reveals his identity as Superman to her. They began a long engagement, which was complicated by the death of Superman, a breakup, and several other problems. The couple finally married in Superman: The Wedding Album (October 9, 1996).

The Biologic Show is a comic book series written and drawn by Al Columbia. The first issue, #0, was released on October 10, 1994 by Fantagraphics Books. Each issue of The Biologic Show contains several short stories and illustrated poems. Many of the pieces deal with disturbing subject matter such as mutilation, incest, and the occult. Issue #0 introduces three of Columbia’s recurring characters: the hapless, Koko the Clown-like Seymour Sunshine in the opening story “No Tomorrow If I Must Return”, and the sibling duo Pim and Francie in “Tar Frogs”. Reaction to The Biologic Show upon its release was mixed. One of the few contemporaneous reviews of issue #0 in the comics press dismissed it as “an array of senselessness. Themes are inane or non-existent and none seem to progress any sense of story.” However, the series was highly praised by other alternative comics creators including Mike Allred and Jim Woodring, who wrote that “[i]t’s full of stuff you don’t want to think about too much, but it’s so much fun to look at that you can’t help but linger. [Columbia] does tricks with time and revelations that are shockingly deft.”

She inadvertently stumbled into a computer room where she spotted her father’s name on a computer screen. Caitlin, investigating this, was interrupted by a security guard who clubbed her with his rifle when she tried to explain herself. Caitlin’s anger activated her latent gen-active abilities. Fairchild’s clothing was shredded in the process, and within seconds she was transformed from a mousy computer geek to a powerful, towering amazon. Caitlin, Roxy and Grunge decided to escape Project: Genesis. Along the way, they were joined by Bobby Lane and Sarah Rainmaker. She first appeared in Deathmate Black (October 11, 1993).

The Court of Owls is a conspiracy that has controlled Gotham City for centuries. They are a violent cabal of some of Gotham City’s oldest and wealthiest families who use murder and money to wield political influence throughout history. Their bases of operation are hidden in some of the city’s oldest structures. A nursery rhyme describing them has been passed down through Gotham’s generations:

Beware the Court of Owls, that watches all the time,

Ruling Gotham from a shadowed perch, behind granite and lime.

They watch you at your hearth, they watch you in your bed.

Speak not a whispered word about them, or they’ll send the Talon for your head.

To carry out their interests, they employ a breed of highly trained assassins known as Talons. The leaders of the organization appear to be human and wear owl masks on their faces, but some lower-ranking members appear to actually be human-owl hybrids. They are first mentioned in Batman #2 (October 19, 2011).

Rachel Anne Summers comes from an alternate future Earth known as Earth-811. In this reality, the assassination of Senator Robert Kelly provoked the ratification of the Mutant Registration Act, leading to a dystopian future where the mutant-hunting Sentinel robots rule North America. Rachel was abducted by operatives working for Ahab, who used drugs and hypnotherapy to turn Rachel into a “Hound,” a mutant who tracks down other mutants. She fulfilled her duties, but her psychic powers linked her to her victims; fueling her grief and despair until she attacked Ahab and scarred him. In return, he sent her to the mutant concentration camps. There, she befriended the surviving mutant rebels, including Wolverine, Magneto, Colossus, Storm, Kate Pryde, and her lover, the adult Franklin Richards. Rachel managed to send Kate’s consciousness into the past to her younger self to prevent the assassination, but it did not change their time. Rachel sent her astral form into the past to find out why and discovered she had sent Kate into an alternate past. On the way back, she encountered the disembodied Phoenix Force and it followed her to her present. Rachel passed out from the strain of astral projection and the Phoenix Force revealed itself to Kate, who asked it to give Rachel a fresh start. When Rachel and Kate broke into “Project: Nimrod” on a suicide mission to destroy a new model of Sentinel, they became trapped. When Kate spoke the words “Dark Phoenix,” the Phoenix Force ripped Rachel from her timeline and sent her body back to the alternate past to which she had sent Kate’s consciousness. This was a past where she learned Jean Grey was dead and that her father was married to someone else. Rachel experienced additional heartache and displacement trauma when she discovered that her father’s new wife, Madelyne Pryor, was pregnant with a son (Nathan Summers), because in her timeline she was the first-born child of Scott Summers. Rachel first appeared in The Uncanny X-Men #141 (October 21, 1980).

“Born Again” details Daredevil’s descent into insanity and destitution at the hands of the Kingpin, as well as his subsequent struggle to build a new life for himself. The arc begins in Daredevil #227 (October 22, 1985). Karen Page, the former secretary of the Nelson & Murdock law offices and girlfriend of Matt Murdock, had left years earlier to pursue an acting career. After a brief period of success, she became a heroin addict and was reduced to starring in pornographic films in Mexico. Strapped for cash, she sells the information that Matt Murdock is Daredevil for a shot of heroin. This information is sold upward to the Kingpin. Over the next six months, he uses his influence to have the IRS freeze Murdock’s accounts, the bank foreclose on his apartment, and police lieutenant Nicholas Manolis testify that he saw Murdock pay a witness to perjure himself. By coincidence, Murdock’s girlfriend Glorianna breaks up with him and turns to dating his law partner and best friend Foggy Nelson on the rebound. Now homeless, Murdock begins suffering from paranoia and has become extremely aggressive. He is continuously followed by the Kingpin’s subordinates, who provide the Kingpin with frequent updates on his mental state, as he has become obsessed with the fruits of his scheme to destroy Murdock. Driven by thoughts of revenge, Murdock confronts the Kingpin in his office, and is brutally beaten by the crime lord.

Pooky is Garfield’s teddy bear and best friend that Garfield discovered stuffed in a drawer. Garfield sometimes communicates with Pooky as if he were a living animal; he can also be over-protective of Pooky. Once, Garfield tried to “protect” Pooky from a present from Jon to Pooky, a miniature accordion. When Pooky lost an eye, Garfield requested a new eye for Pooky as his Christmas present. Garfield is not shy to show his love for Pooky, often grabbing it in hugs. This causes Jon to be a bit envious that the teddy bear is more loved than him and he occasionally asks for hugs from Garfield but Garfield would refuse, particularly when in one comic strip Jon asks “Can I have a hug like that?” but instead Garfield sighed and gave Pooky to Jon and left without saying a word. He first appeared in the Garfield strip on October 23, 1978.

Arcade affects a manner of dress and speech that makes him appear to be a comedic character. This is part of his overall theme, which extends into his preferred method of murder, an underground funhouse of colorful deathtraps, usually decked out in cheery colors and disguised as an amusement park, which he has dubbed “Murderworld”. Arcade first appeared in Marvel Team-Up #65 (October 25, 1977). Arcade became a freelance assassin, traveling across the world, killing people in rather mundane fashions, and amassing even more wealth than he already had. Discovering an aptitude for technology, Arcade designed and built his first Murderworld, a subterranean evil lair disguised as an amusement park. From this base, and with the help of two mysterious assistants named Miss Locke and Mr. Chambers, he reemerged as the world’s most expensive hitman. For the price of $1 million, he would tailor Murderworld to exploit the specific weaknesses of his targets and then watch as they are killed by a variety of colorful deathtraps strewn throughout the facility. However, one of his “gimmicks” is that he always deliberately leaves each target a small chance of survival.
