Missing Staple Question...15499

Collector Paulbg2000 private msg quote post Address this user
I have a book that's missing the top staple and has some rear cover damage at the staple location. Book presents really well and I was looking to have it graded for personal collection.

Questions

1. How do CBCS and CGC Treat a missing staple? All posts I can find are for books that were manufactured without the staple, this is one that has been removed.

2. If the staple was replaced, I'm guessing it would be obvious due to the tear at the back of the book, but it could be done keeping cover attached. Would this count as restoration / conservation or is it acceptable?

Again, for personal collection so trying to figure out what to do...I was leaning towards grading without staple if it came back green label at CGC, but would prefer it to go through CBCS...just not sure how they grade something like this.

Book in question is ASM 238 Canadian Price Variant with tattooz pack, but no top staple (assuming it's married from another book and original removal damaged staples).

CBCS’ Grading guidelines don’t mention missing staples until down at the 1.0-1.5 level

This book has seen much better days and tends to be heavily worn and tattered.

A copy of a comic in this grade has all pages and most of the covers.
A book in this condition is worn, ragged and unattractive.
Heavy creases and folds are prevalent.
Paper quality can be very low.
The spine and/or cover may be completely split.
Staples may be missing.
Coupons cut from cover and or inside pages. Panels can be clipped out.
Parts of the front cover may be missing.
Soiling, staining, tears, markings or chunks missing will interfere with reading.
Brittleness may be a factor.
Extensive amounts of tape are acceptable on the comic in these grades.

If it is the only major flaw don’t know if the book would be locked in to those grades. However, it is clear that it is considered a major flaw

As for replacing the staple, I am not too familiar with the intricacies of restoration and conservation but imagine that would depend on a few factors. I imagine if you just took an every day staple and added it on with an office stapler it might come back as amateur restoration. Period staples carefully attached to fill the existing divots made by the original staples, maybe professional restoration or conservation but I am not sure

Thanks for the info, if the staple replacement went ahead, it'd be from a donor book of same era.

If the viagra is working you should be well over a 9.8. xkonk private msg quote post Address this user
The only personally relevant example I have is a book that came back graded as having extra staples in it at manufacturing, but the extra ones were then removed. The book got dinged for that but not down to 1.5. So not apples to apples but something to work with.
