Population Report?15497

CGC has this feature but don’t see it here. Does CBCS have a title/issue search feature to see how many were graded and at what grade. (Population Report)

Yes. In Fact Population Report is CBCS’ name for it. On CGC it is referred to as the Census

Just curious what value there is in this? Is it just to get a sense of how unusual a specific comic is?

The population report gives you an idea of how many graded copies of a book there are and the spread of grades for that book.

For example if you have a book that grades at a 2.5 (a rather low grade) but the population report shows that every other copy of that book has graded lower, then it changes the perception of that book in the marketplace.

Another example, maybe you see a 9.9 for sale, an exceptionally high grade that often command outrageous prices because of the rarity of such grades, but the book is Batman Damned, which on the population report has an absurdly high instance of 9.9 and 10s compared to other books, then your and likely a lot of others’ spending practices in regards to the book will change

In addition, CBCS’ report also shows you the number of copies that have been signed so you can make further distinctions and decisions.

Thanks. That's helpful. I assume that if a book is relatively low # of copies, even if my copy is on the low end, that helps it's perceived value since they are harder to find?

You have to be careful when using the report to judge a book’s general rarity. Choosing to get a book graded is a filter in itself and people choose to grade for different reasons. If a book has very few graded copies does that mean that the book is so rare that few people have them to submit? Or maybe it is a worthless, overprinted book that most people do not think is worth the expense of grading?

Not automatically. There could be a small number graded simply because there is low demand for graded copies.
