I've got a picture of me with "Not Stan Lee" at GenCon a few years ago. He goes every year and people swarm him.

We have a family of brothers that live about 2 1/2 hours away and they do multiple iron man buildups but since he is apparently too old or isnt interested, he instead cosplays as Stan....

ever visit a musuem and see the rules about no flashes, and notice the lighting is kept very low? This is done for a reason....

You cannot dispel the science, it is rather basic. Light does harm to comic books...you can use filtering mediums and avoid direct light but end of the day there is no simple substitute for dark , temperature controlled and without invasive lighting sources.

Throwing in water and other types of storage issues is non sequitar....to the topic.

Museums display priceless art. UV minimization to the point of insignificance is my point.

Not sure if you understand my logic here <<< editing from “science”…

My other points are valid because if not hung or displayed the comics must be stored. They are often stored in WORSE conditions…

See the connection? A non sequitur would be if my comments were not logically connected but unless you suggest taking comics and storing them in some null void, balancing the risks is absolutely logically related.

To clarify - if you are arguing that leaving a piece out, forever, will hasten fade - sure. But if you are displaying a comic for a while then store, then display another, etc… you are talking imperceptible levels of fade.

Museums display priceless art...I consider many of my comics to be priceless art as well. You can minimize UV all you like, it still does damage to some extent, which is WHY museums insist on low lighting , no flashes etc.

I perfectly understand the science, afterall it isn't me trying to suggest that displaying books in open light is not both harmful and not the best method for protecting and keeping them safe...you know?

Light=damage to comic books...see the connection? You can shift the discussion to water, earthquakes, mermaid splashes, and even godzilla belches, but none of that has any bearing on the topic of light and displaying comics...see the non connection?

Never said open, exposed to light etc… never said any of that.

Said with proper, intelligent precautions it absolutely can be safely done.

If you create a straw man version of what I said… easy to tear it down.

What I said is up above and clearly stated. I would absolutely display a pricey book in my office, for example, on a wall that has zero direct light and encased in archival glass.

Heck, I have a relatively inexpensive Watchmen 1 on display and yet still use archival protection despite not having any direct sun, no incandescent and no fluorescent, and in a room that itself has UV and generally light/heat reducing glass. Because for me I like to “keep things nice” despite $ value.

Also, I think there is a value in enjoying art and “things” and I like to balance the various aspects of collecting.

Not worth (further) belaboring the point but I would urge anyone who stores their books out of the way to consider all the other risks. It is very obvious in hindsight but I have seen many collections stored in boxes (dark) in dehumidified basements but not elevated off the floor.

Or in apartment - in a way that if the pipes above burst, would wreak havoc.

Those types of situations are common and I would wager water damage does the most damage. Ironic that it people kept books on walls we would see less severe damage…

UF4 will be fine. It was a $1 bin book for what 10 years?

I use custom metal frames. The Spider-Man has an anti-reflective Uv protected acrylic in front of it.

There are fluro lights above though I never use them except to take this picture.

Also the highest grade is 6.0 so no high grade books left out in the open.

Also I don't use comic boxes for storage.
I have pull out drawers that are just slightly smaller than a long box.

I do like your set up. I have ben slowly switching from Comic Boxes to File Cabinets.

I personally love some of the frames that are out there. I keep my blinds shut, but invested in museum glass, and always recommend it.

Thank you! *deep breath*

Same spiel I give everyone when they ask, they look very nice and I like them a lot (got them specifically for the UV glass), but buying from them was a real hassle, they don't specialize in comics so they didn't understand how thick graded comics are even though they advertised for it. It took about a month of back and forth with a couple frames being sent to me before I got some that fit.
That said, they were extremely cool about it and didn't question me when I said the frames they sent didn't fit and needed new ones, and they let me keep the old ones. This was also 2-3 years ago, so maybe things have gotten better since.
I've also heard great thing about these guys (I think they're a comic shop based in Michigan), but I have trouble finding their stuff in stock: https://thecollectorsresource.com/inline4-museum-edition-frame-for-comics/

I'm actually already looking at that second link, and I do like those (though, like you said, they're out of stock right now). But man, those ones you have are awesome. I'll check them out for sure. Thanks for the info.

This is all really good stuff.

I’m about to get a proper office so I’m trying to figure out some ways to display some books and have others where people can thumb through them.

I’m thinking for display, I may go with reprints and let the real deal sit in the dark climate controlled closet.

Has anyone built any sliding drawers for them?

Any tips?

What I sometimes do is take a good scan of the original book, print it out, and place it over a drek book and display that. Hard to tell the difference and serves same purpose.

Just ordered one of these, so we'll see how it works out. Thanks again for the recommendation!
