quick question about direct edition vs newstands/barcodes on x-men vol 115433

Hey all!,
1st post here! Had a few questions

Question#1. I was just curious... when did they start differentiating between the Newsstand(barcodes) vs Direct(comic store) editions on the X-Men comics?
I was reading this article:
https://uncannyderek.com/2011/04/01/classic-comic-special-comics-covers-barcod/
Was it on #131 as the article implies maybe?

I realize sometimes the newsstand might be rarer to find based on stuff I read;
or sometimes it was available in quantity but being the nature of a newsstand copy, it was more prone to wear from people reading and/or mishandling them.
But I usually just like getting the Direct Editions as having a barcode on the front-cover of a comic always seemed a bit off-putting to me (vs those nice Spiderman/'30years of x-men'/etc Direct Edition logos). But I was just curious...
Question#2. I haven't collected comics since the 90s and it seems like they don't need to scan in the comics anymore and don't have the bottom-left square anymore? More room for the cover artwork, thats fine by me .

Question#3: I think on other comics I also saw articles on how there were more variations like in the 'star'/cost in the top-left corner. But I'm thinking that doesn't apply even to x-men comics?

I’m not sure of the exact x-men issue, but in 1979 newsstand and direct were officially differentiated by the strike through barcode for Direct copies. At this point the market was 94% newsstand to a mere 6% direct. Later evening to 50-50 in 1986 then newsstands becoming scarce by mid 90s then nearly non existent from 2000-2013

Not the article I was looking for, but most of the same info.

Question 2- new comics usually have a barcode somewhere on front or back unless it’s “Virgin”. Some comics 90s - now have a price instead of a barcode depending on the publisher (Valiant being the first to mind)

Question 3- there can be regional variations like Canada and Pence pricing.

@persianninja - Welcome to the forum! If this helps, I know that X-Men #122 exists in both the bar code newsstand edition and the direct edition with the slash through the bar code.

If the viagra is working you should be well over a 9.8. xkonk private msg quote post Address this user
The population report doesn't have any direct editions listed for 121 down to 118, but the tables are also a little confusing.

Maybe #122 is it?... I can't find anything earlier on ebay when i did a quick search: https://www.ebay.com/itm/183947626952?hash=item2ad42209c8:g:MV4AAOSwnSJddvP5
and that is made in 1979 when that chart starts:

(although that could also be because its very rare to see older Direct Editions so maybe someone can confirm)
