Hey All,

I was wondering how much does rust on a staple affect the grade of the book ?

It only seems to be on the staple itself ?
Also can CBCS or CGC replace these ?

See pic

The staples can be replaced. I'm not sure if it counts as restoration or conservation. I know that it gets noted on the label. I'm not positive if CBCS or CCS will do it, but I know some companies, like Hero Restoration, can do it.

As far as the grade, I've still got books that were higher grade with some light discoloration/rust on the staples, but it may depend how much of the rust has transferred to the paper. Others will probably know more about the grading side than me when it comes to rusted staples.

So its better not to restore it ?

Im planning on getting it signed by Sean at megacon but wanna send it and get slabbed .
Just also curious about how much grade those two stables would take off .

I would have them replaced or chose another book, especially if you are getting it graded. If the rust migrates into the paper, it will start eating it away.

@Eikkichi What book is it anyway? If it's not an expensive book just find a different copy

I know zero about Dragon Ball Z (I’m assuming that’s what this comic is) but given that it is likely a modern comic I’d think you’d spend more $ having the staple replaced than it would be worth afterwards. If it’s a sentimental book that would be a different can of worms but value wise I’d think you’d be better off buying a new copy

@Eikkichi to better answer your question though, basing this purely off of what CBCS provides for grading info I’d think the absolute max grade for your book is a 9.0 but since I only see info about staples in the 9.2-9.4 section here and the next section (7.5-9.0) is a wide range, I could be very wrong.

So its DragonballZ #1 to find these books NM is almost impossible.
From the looks of it the rust hasnt gone into the book yet.

The rust only looks like its on the staples.
TBH if be happy for a 9.4 upwards for them. But if it can be restored then perhaps.
I think its going to be going into CGC thou not 100% sure and dont think they do restore it .

@Eikkichi you might want to try to gently clean the staples, maybe scrape or sandpaper. I would be worried like dr Watson about the rust migrating into the paper itself. You might get a notation on the label " staples cleaned"
