Silver age key investment thoughts15375

Collector jhrey66 private msg quote post Address this user
So I have max $1500 I want to invest in one graded, Silver Age book

here is my base criteria-

Looking for the grade to be an 8.0 (flexible especially if there is lack of graded NM books)
Book is perhaps slightly undervalued or below the radar
Has strong chance to appreciate greatly in next 3 years

blue chip type book with steady growth, with chance for more

Not looking for some magic answer here, I already have about a dozen contenders

just wondering if someone who likes the idea can throw me some curveballs or
just great ideas...

Thanks for playing.

A couple of suggestions. One DC, one Marvel:

Sub-Mariner 1. Obvious reasons.

Lois Lane 70: First SA Catwoman appearance (her first appearance since Comic Code Authority was established in 1954).

Both have things to recommend them, both come in around your price point for an 8.0+.

Easy for me - Fantastic four 45 or 46.

Silver Surfers or Pre-69 titles with Silver Surfer covers. Part of MCU now, but yet to make appearance.

I like Brave and the Bold #34 as a sleeper key that has the potential to blow up depending on Hawkman's impact in Black Adam. 10-cent DC key featuring first Silver Age Hawkman and Hawkgirl, with an awesome Joe Kubert cover. $1500 could probably get you a 7.5. I'm looking to upgrade my copy in the near future.

Going by your picture, you probably already have this but I'd go: Conan 1

I'd got with FF28 - X-Men crossover, great Kirby cover.

Two teams that have yet to arrive in the MCU, but will.

You can get an 8.5 for around $1200.

There haven't been a ton of sales lately but a 9.0 just went for $3100.

FF28 seems like an undervalued book to me. (Which is why I picked up another one).

Maybe Silver Surfer #1 or Fantastic Four #52.

Based on your criteria, and if for longer term and not a near term “pop” I would eliminate almost every Marvel book out there.

DC, Charlton.

Of those and based on your criteria, B&B34 and if you dont really need to stick to condition then JLA 1. Superboy 68 is cool too.

LOL, yes I am very stacked in Conan Vol 1, but I do not currently have #1
Its on my short list..for sure..there is CGC 8.5 on My Comic Shop for just under 1K, Ive been eyeing.
Conan #1, I'd hold ..for this experiment I am looking nice 24-36ish month return to reinvest in bigger books .

Ah - so a short to medium-term buy and flip? Who knows but in 2 years you could lose $ on any book. That is too short-term to offer guidance.

With the goal to flip then it is tough - because you are expecting to make money off this book and flip it into your bigger key (which then has to underperform - likely significantly if I assume it is more $$ today)…

Very tough!

agreed, I could of course continue to hold whatever it is...but I hope with a steady growth book I can keep upgrading every couple ish years, market implosions aside. I feel like I missed the boat on a lot of books that where in reach a few years ago, working my way up , market corrections aside is only way I'll ever get some of bigger books id like to own.. the pains of a life long on and off again collector
I've sold so many great books over the years, I am embatrassed to say what they are worth in todays market, vs what I got for them. Thanks for BanB34 thats two on that so far. I'll add that my list..

King Comics #1, 1st Flash Gordon, live action trailer should be dropping in right around 2 years. 1500 could get you a low grade.

A SA book (actually a magazine) in that price and grade range that appears to have room to grow is Vampirella #1. Three others that come to mind are Showcase #37 (Metal Men), Showcase #60 (SA Spectre - still affordable in 9.2/9.4), and Showcase #80 (SA Phantom Stranger - still affordable in 9.4/9.6).

Showcase 55 is really interesting to me because it is so completely undervalued relative to it's Golden Age counterpart. The Golden Age first of Solomon Grundy is a huge key and impossible to find, All American Comics #61. The Silver Age first, Showcase 55 doesn't get much price consideration but everyone seems to love it as a collectible. I don't get it.
If I were buying one spec book for the next two years it would be Flash 105. I think you can get a 4.0 for abut $1,600.

It's definitely on an upward trajectory, as is DC Presents 26 in recent weeks.

I currently have this book at CBCS but it will not grade anywhere near a 9.0...more like a 4.0...great book!!!
