Horrible books that hit my pressing desk...15370

CBCS Pressing SteveRicketts private msg quote post Address this user
Here's something we see fairly regularly. Tracers. No, I'm not talking about inkers (Chasing Amy joke), I'm talking about kids tracing the their comic cover on a sheet of paper. This also includes kids doing their homework on top of their comics. These can usually be repaired without a trace </end puns> except in cases where the indent is so deep it damages the paper fiber.

Normally we want to see our books in @Sborock "Across my Desk" thread. Now, I really want to see one of my books in this thread.

Heres an interesting one. An old squarebound that had a nice look, but it had a spine roll. This was a first for me, so I had to figure out a way to erase the hardship of time. Here is the before...

I always tell people that we are beauticians, not magicians, but on this book we may have invoked the dark arts.

Thanks for launching this thread! I submitted an Iron Fist 14 for pressing with the July 4th promotion, with long vertical creasing/tracing on the cover (no color breaks) but otherwise in nice shape. Whether it hits this thread or not, looking forward to some more black magic to iron 'em out!

Nice press but did that white mark on the right of the second "S" get worse?

Fixing a spine roll on a square bound! nice. I thought this couldn't be done. I'll have to inquire how I can do this too.

@SteveRicketts - Amazing work on the comics you have posted so far. I am flabbergasted that the spine tics on the Hulk 181 are almost completely eradicated.

@Sigur_Ros - I suspect it may be the same, but just the angle (or lack thereof) of the page. Notice on the before, that the flash glare stops mid-S (page slightly bent upward) while on the after, the flash glare runs past to the end of the page. Thus flatter page allowing for better view of the original mark/flaw. Just a guess.

But how did the MegaForce decal turn out???

Collector Kinsella5 private msg quote post Address this user
Pretty amazing work, but how on that Incredible Hulk #181 were you able to remove that color break right where the blue circular box is at top with the small Hulk in it? The before photo shows a color break on the spine, the after pressing almost makes it look like it somehow was pressed out.
Post 69 IP   flag post
I'd like to say I still turned out alright, but that would be a lie. flanders private msg quote post Address this user
@Kinsella5 it looks like the spine was slightly realigned and that combined with the angle of the picture is hiding it.

Take a look at the "Before and After" picture below. In the blue area inside the circle, there is no colour break (just a pressable crease). The colour break happens on the spine - in which there is a slight spine roll - but "disappears" after the pressing corrects the spine roll

Another spine re-alignment. This book had a nice look, it just needed a little therapy.

@HulkSmash The pages were not fragile. The paper was still white and supple.

Little story here. I accidentally shipped the wrong slab to someone, and they returned it. It was a 9.6 (CGC) and this is how it was returned:

From what I could tell, as bad as it looked there was no color breaks…so I took the chance and had it sent in to cbcs for a crack, press and regrade. Here was the result:

@SteveRicketts Was this you? If not, thank the fellow you likely trained. Bravo!

@Drogio how in the world did that happen inside a slab?

More than likely the book was dropped or had a heavy impact during shipping that caused it to jam into the inner well.

Yes. Case had impact damage as well. It was packed poorly and evidence the priority Mail box was dropped on its end. USPS would not reimburse me unless I gave it up to them (and it would be sent to a landfill). Took a chance.

I just imagined such a thing would end up causing different damage. Great work by the presser regardless!
