Personally, if I were buying a book for $20k, I'm pretty sure Id have enough money to be flying to see this thing in person and paying in person. I hope I get to that point some day. |

There are a couple books (DC) I am interested in. JLA 1 and (less so) Green Lantern 1 in particular but also if you have ungraded but higher condition Superboy 68? Or other ungraded books could be interesting too (same as my list earlier). Selling without the ebay, HA and other fees would split those savings between you and the buyer. It may be worth testing the waters here and comparing as a first step. |

@Ladygirl - sorry to read of your loss. On the pieces you referenced i would not be a target buyer for you. So, as such, my suggestion won’t be self-serving. That being, yes, perhaps work with/sell to some of the CBCS forum members first. While you may not get the absolute highest dollar, you also don’t risk selling something at auction and getting .50 on the dollar. My experience here is that the members pretty much deal fairly and are good people.

Not everyone is looking for a run. I would sell piece meal seeing as how you are not dealing with thousands of books. Even non keys will prolly get sold with relative ease given the current market.

I'm very sorry for your loss. I'm happy your husband left you such valuable treasures, but the process of selling must be rough. I'm so sorry. Right now I'm grading a lot of raw books so it would be easier for my wife to sell if I were gone. Everyone here is giving very solid advice and it's great to know Steve is helping. There are basically 3 scenarios: 1) You sell to a dealer, he will offer a fraction of what they're worth and then resell for a profit. 2) You go through an auction house. Heritage and Comic Connect would both take excellent care of you. Heritage's fees are 20% and Comic Connect 10%. Personally, I favor Comic Connect, but both are great. 3) You sell direct to collectors. If you have someone you trust who can help value the comics, you'll probably make the most this way. Going through an auction house is less work for you. Plus they'll give you an advance on the value of your books if cash is needed. They can even have them graded and take the grading fees out of the amount they sell for. But again, selling direct allows you to keep the most $$$. |

Oops. There is a 4th option. You hang onto the books, keep them safe, and sell 5-10 years from now when they're likely to be worth even more.

Only problem in waiting to sell is the dreaded 1099 next year. Personally I want to ditch at least one heavy hitter book so I can avoid the IRS for 1 last cycle.

@Ladygirl Our condolences for your loss.sounds like you two were together for a long time it's great he left you a nice nest egg. This is something my wife and I talk about. Our plan is too sell closer to when we retire but if my passing is premature, I have friends I could trust to sell for her. She is knowledgeable on a lot of the books. I'm in the process of grading them now, it just makes the selling much easier. One thing I would suggest is getting ahold of elite_11 on Instagram. This is also our option to sell our books later. They sell A TON OF BOOKS on consignment and only take a 5.5% commission. They list and sell for you. I buy from them on a regular basis, no sales tax and no PayPal fees either. FYI I would be interested in the ff1 and/or ff4 at fair market value

@Batman66 good to know my brother is pushing me to sell them he doesn't want to deal with them if I leave this world My (3) grown kids would probably kill each other over them. The other thought is to put a directive in my will to turn over complete collection to auction house and then they can split the proceeds The other part of me wants to get the money not let them know. They've taken advantage of me enough and I will probably need the money. My husband was 10 years older than me. Hopefully not going anywhere soon. |

@Ladygirl with elite_11, they put an amazing fantasy 15 ( the first appearance of Spider-Man) in a .5 up for sale for 15,995 and it sold in 20 minutes. Like I said when I go to sell my bigger books, I will hit them up first. Very reputable and well known. 24k followers atm.

Just my thoughts but,,. Spend the money on yourself. It seems from your description the folks you would leave it behind to, are less than ideal candidates. I would imagine that your loved one would have wanted YOU to be happy or else he would have willed them elsewhere. |

There is a middle ground - I hesitate to give advice in a situation like thia (and given your comments on doing research already) but here it goes: Diversify. Keep a few, sell a few or a bunch. You get to enjoy some of the sentimental benefit and you get to enjoy some cash. My view, sell the big $ ones that are in current demand but have a relatively large number of copies out there. Long term they “may” converge with the rarer, more classically influential ones. How to quantify, just find historical price trends and see which ones skyrocketed during the last 24 months or so… Even without doing any of the above I still suggest diversifying. What I will also suggest is that for those you decide to sell, capture as much or the $$ yourself. This forum is a good place - the “other” forum is too. So long as the transaction is protected somehow (either reputation or escrow) you should be fine. Absent the above working or being appealing, find a low cost convenient platform. I use ebay but cant stand it for a variety of reasons… but it is uber convenient and so I buy stuff there reluctantly. Now I usually try to deal outside the system and while it takes effort, I benefit with paying a lower price and the seller makes more $$… only ebay loses. That is the result you want - for every single entity out there besides you and the buyer to lose and not make a red cent… that is the ideal ;-) Looking forward to hearing back on the JLA and if there are some ungraded books that we could make a deal on ;-) |

Quote:Originally Posted by Ladygirl do you guys have probate or estate taxes in the US/your state? Is it too late to amend your husbands returns? In my province probate(estate tax) is 1.5%..so you would assess the value of the books on the date he passed - pay the 1.5%..then that assessed value would be your new starting value for example $20k...then when you sell for $25k you only pay the tax on the $5k gain (but of course less auction house fees etc.) so not even the $5k. Just sayin'.... Might be worth talking to an accountant who knows your state/federal rules |

Everyone is so helpful and kind. Thank you for all your help and suggestions. I missed the cutoff for Heritage, I'm happy I did. It's crazy the money they get for really doing nothing. Especially with the books that are graded. I'm going to think about the forum, and the other options. Why should auction houses get buyers premium and huge percentage. |

@Ladygirl the way it is set up is the buyer sends the funds directly to the buyer via friends and family with no comment in the notes. (Everything is 100% backed by elite_11) so there is no taxes paid.

If rushed, if time is worth more than $ etc… or if there is lack of info on the fair value, then they play their role… but wow there is a lot of $ being left on the table. You have some nice collector “assets” and this is generally a seller’s market. Again, I personally always argue to diversify and you may want to keep some books… but these forums will get some real investors who are the same participants on the auction sites. |

Quote:Originally Posted by Ladygirl I can only speak for myself as a thematic collector but I never focus on runs… I am sure some people do but it gets pretty specific for some of the higher dollar books… in other words, if I am doing a JLA run I might then want every book of a certain minimum grade or something and it gets $$$. I am interested in the JLA 1 but more to complement my B&B 28 and my JLA 9 to get the core Justice League books… sort of like how I collect all the mid / higher grades of Superman villains, Batman villains etc. There are so many ways to slice it but I would think absent something exceptional (like very very high grade collections) there would be as much an expectation of a “bulk discount” as any sort of “complete run premium”… I just think it is narrowing the buyer pool too much. But I am biased as I would like to buy those books, depending on grade and price (again, I only consider mid to high grade). |

@Ladygirl - So if you haven't done so already, here is another resource for you. GoCollect.com Register yourself on their site and you can plug in each of the graded comics to get the fair market value. Caution though, as the comics market has been very overheated the past year or so, and especially the past several months with crazy speculation, some value may lag recent months sale. But, I think for the comics you have, they may be pretty up to date. This can give you a real good idea of value if dealing direct with some forum members Now, if you do want to just auction them, you may also want to consider MyComicShop.com. Este is really great to work with. They charge 0-3% to winning bidders and charge the seller only up to 8%. I the comic sells for 4 figures and higher, their fee is much less and may even be capped. They have weekly auctions, but your comics may qualify for their quarterly "Prime Auctions" and the next one is in October. Again, I would suggest offering up to forum members first for possible best return. |

@Ladygirl - Sorry for your loss. If you need any prices for recents sales, I have a membership to Go Collect so I can look those up for you. If you decide to sell some books here, I would be interested in a few of the Adventure Comics you listed. I used to be like your husband, collect just about anything, but now I primarily collect Adventure Comics, Amazing Spider-Man, and X-Men. Good luck in whatever you decide.
