Here is some of the original art I could find. Some are pages of comics and some are full sketches.

From JonBoy Meyers:

The Masters of the Universe piece was something he pitched but they opted not to go with it as they didn't believe in an evil Orko.

From Tom Lyle:

From Tom Sutton:

Finally, it needs no introduction (it is a lithograph but he did sign it):

Amazing stuff you got there. I am hoping to get my first sketch done this year. I got a Hellboy Turkish blank cover variant that I am hoping to get sketched up. Over my vaca in the Outerbanks I read the first TPB of Madam Xanadu and really love Amy Reeders art. She is going to be at a couple shows here on the east coast so I am hoping I can entice her into doing a Hellboy sketch. What do you think? Am I shooting to high?

It definitely can't hurt to ask. In fact, my profile pic is based on an obscure wrestling character from a (dice based) wrestling (Pro Wrestling Superstars) game called Dr. Red Fang. I met Mike Henderson at a local show and he's a wrestling fan so I asked him to do his rendition of Fang based on an image found online. The result is my profile pic.

Was just thinking about this topic today. What do people think about how to display original art?

I'm looking to get a piece or two done at baltimore comiccon, one for my son and possibly one for myself. Would cbcs art encapsulation be a good way to go or do people prefer to have their art framed?

This is for PC of course, and the piece for my son I'm probably going to ask to have it slightly personalized for my son's bday, so resale isn't something that's even remotely of importance. Just taking into account the preservation of the pieces and display value.

Originally, when I had more room, my plan was to take the original comic art page and put it in a large picture frame alongside the comic it came from (cover and issue page). My Batman one came from a relatively cheap comic so I just cut the cover and page out of the book. Now, I have no room so the art has been moved to a portfolio binder.

Although slabbing an original art is ok. I personally prefer to have them professionally framed. You can get it done at a significant discount via Michael's if you wait for their coupons. I get it museum quality so the glass reduces glare and I think it provides some uv protection. Granted I am lazy and never hung any of my art.

Here are 2 examples.

@Bronte I never paid enough attention but I see the signature now. That's a Michael Turner?

Yes it is. I somehow grabbed it before his stuff became impossible to get.

@Bronte Nice. I have two original Witchblade pages. One I bought from him and one off eBay. Got a free sketch for buying the one from him. Had him do Darkness since that and Witchblade were my favorite books at the time. He was the absolute nicest guy. I couldn't say anything bad about him if I tried.

@Puckster
I've read about him. It's a total shame he passed so early. His work was stellar and I can only imagine if he had more time to grace the comic world....

@Sebastsk8 quite honestly, for display purposes I strongly recommend traditional framing done by a pro. They will be familiar with handling expensive pieces and also preservation (so long as you specify the details and expectations). I collect some original art as well as limited prints and I have all them framed and on the walls - and really zero concern about damage. Key is being smart about placement relative to windows or foot traffic.

As for comic size art and display - I love my crafticomics frames. My profile pic has an example of something I have up on my home office wall. I opted for their archival/museum acrylic for UV protection, simply for flexibility of placement in the future.

That may be an option as well though I would talk to them directly because it is sized for actual books not individual pages etc…

I think in the “long run” the value of quality grading and encapsulation is much more about verification and transferability than preservation and display - but that is just my opinion. For personal collection art I would opt to find a nice way to display it in a manner that protects - but not at the cost of enjoyment.

I agree with @Davethebrave - professional framing is the way to go if you want to preserve the item properly. It also can make the art that much better...
